What a holiday in Bali, Indonesia is really like. Where is Bali? Geographical location, attractions, photos and reviews of tourists Restaurants with views

Before our trip to Indonesia, we read a lot about the sights of the island of Bali and chose what to see. And we visited many of them, so now we present to you not just a list with descriptions of places (you will find many of these without us), but our own rating of Bali attractions with personal reviews and impressions. But the impressions were different...

We visited about twenty Bali attractions and we have our own review for each of them. But I decided to include only 13 in the rating, because it’s the damn dozen after the Balinese New Year that looks the most organic, don’t you agree? 🙂

But without ranting, I present to you my rating– from the weakest impressions and less pleasant reviews to the strong and amazing.

Sights of Bali: from so-so to the coolest. No. 13. Goa Gajah

Caves of Goa Gajah are located 13 kilometers from Ubud and this is their main advantage. The entrance to the cave is decorated with the face of a demon (and this is the second advantage of this place), in the photos of tourists it seems large and scary... But it only seems. The cave itself is small, you can walk around it in a minute. Due to its convenient accessibility, there are many Chinese tourists here.

No. 12. Tanakh Lot

It’s just a rally on Bolotnaya, by God: there are just as many people, but under your feet it’s like a swamp (with snakes), your shoes immediately become wet. Well, if you arrived at low tide, then Tanakh Lot– just for show, not for lifelong memories. Well, you can also take a photo against the backdrop of a crashing wave.

No. 11. Palace on the water Tirtaganga

In fact Tirtaganga Water Palace– a very beautiful and original place. It's nice to walk through a stone labyrinth in a pond with huge fish! But due to its remote location from any civilization and due to the fact that there is nothing to have fun besides this labyrinth, this attraction of the island of Bali receives such a low place.

No. 10. Besakih Temple

Yes, it is called the main temple of the island of Bali. Yes, it often tops “What to see in Bali” lists. Yes, it is located next to the picturesque Agung Volcano. Yes, he's handsome. But nowhere have we met so many unpleasant people “grazing” near this Bali landmark. It is impossible to approach the temple itself without passing through the barrier of the most impudent merchants and “helpers”, at whom you just yell “Get the hell away from us!!!” They extort money ($5) to just walk silently next to you. Otherwise, you will supposedly not be allowed close to the temple. Otherwise, you can supposedly only walk along a dirt road behind a fence, from where you can see absolutely nothing. About maternal Besakih temple we have .

Sights of Bali: Besakih Temple. The Balinese are very pleasant and friendly people. And they send the most rude and unpleasant individuals to Besakih temple.

No. 9. Taman Ayun

A beautiful place to take a walk. Very picturesque park areas, although there are no benches. Tourists will take a lot of good photos. And it's easy to get to and parking is free. The reviews are most positive.

Impressive in any weather.

No. 8. Taman Ujung, Palace on the Water

In fact, I was even ready to put it above the legendary Uluwatu Temple, but only because of the inconvenient accessibility of this Bali landmark, I put it lower.

IN Taman Ujunge you can spend a couple of hours just walking, you can take a hundred beautiful photos against the backdrop of picturesque paths, trees, gazebos. But the most powerful impression is when you climb the high stairs to the observation deck and see from there the blue, blue sea. A delightful sight. And there are also few people here - both tourists and locals. Reviews about this Bali attractions the most positive.

It is not yet frequented by tourists, and this is also its charm.

No. 7. Uluwatu Temple

Another popular one landmark of Bali island, which I did not include in the top five. There are two reasons. Firstly, there are a lot of aggressive monkeys there, and one of them stole and broke Zhenya’s glasses. And before that, another monkey jumped on Zhenya’s chest, snatching a bottle of water. But we dealt with it))) And there are many such “victims”: we were in Uluwatu twice and in total we heard someone squealing six times because of the impudent behavior of the monkeys.

The second reason is the inability to really see and get closer to the Uluwatu Temple. So here the main photos are of rocks, waves crashing against them and the surrounding nature. Very beautiful. You could stand and watch for a whole hour, enjoying it, but no way - in ten minutes someone will appear next to you? That's right, another cheeky macaque.

Sights of Bali: Uluwatu Temple at sunset- this is an indescribable sight! It’s a pity I didn’t see him “live”, but only in the photo: a monkey stole one of my glasses, and we hid the second in a backpack so as not to lose them.

No. 6. Gitgit Waterfall

A very beautiful and powerful waterfall that is easy to get to. Few tourists. And, to be honest, based on my reviews, I would make two fifth places, which would include two attractions of the island of Bali - Gitgit waterfall and Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Look at the photo: can you really say which is more beautiful?

And also to Gitgit waterfall you can get very close and within five seconds you will be completely wet. A wonderful, very joyful feeling.

Gitgit Waterfall- one of the few attractions of Bali island, which are easy to reach. It's right next to the road.

№ 5. Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The Tegallalang rice terraces are located 10 kilometers from Ubud, they are very easy to get to, access to the terraces is free (which is generally very surprising for Bali). The views are fantastic. Be sure to visit them, enjoy this wonderful spectacle without haste, and take a lot of photos. And no one will bother you - there are no annoying merchants or guides here. But there are several nice cafes overlooking this beautiful landmark of the island.

I don't know if anyone can give me a clue for this Bali landmark negative reviews?

Sights of Bali: Tegallalang Rice Terraces near Ubud. Not only beautiful, but also free!

No. 4. Jati Luwih Rice Terraces

Yes, you know, Jati Luwih is the second rice terrace in the top five most impressive attractions of Bali island. Getting to them is long and difficult, but when you get there... You will see as many of these terraces as the eye can see! They will be everywhere, big, small, flooded, not flooded, so be prepared to stop every 50 meters and take a photo.

When you see such beauty, the rice will seem tastier!

No. 3. Nung-nung Falls

Honestly, the day we visited Nung-nung waterfall, I didn’t think I would put him third in my ranking. But time has passed, and I catch myself thinking that this is the landmark I remember most often, or rather, my feelings...

Firstly, because of the descent. TO Nung-nung waterfall there is such a steep staircase that you don’t go down it, but run! You run at full speed towards the waterfall! Which is thundering somewhere out there, calling you...

And now you’re close, it’s time to say “secondly.” The first time you see Nung-nung makes a very big impression. It gets louder and louder, and you are already very close, there are only thirty steps left, twenty, ten and now... The steps break off and you turn 90 degrees. Here he is!!! As in “The Master and Margarita” - “Love jumped out in front of us, like a killer jumps out of the ground in an alley, and struck us both at once!” The Nung-nung waterfall had exactly the same feeling. It thunders, makes noise, yells, beautiful, powerful, calls you to itself, and there is no one else here except you...

And thirdly, this is the way back, along steep high steps, which I didn’t count, but my body is sure that there were about 600 of them (at least I know what 300 are - we climbed them in St. Peter’s Church in Munich). And my heart jumped out, and my temples pounded, and about ten stops were made. But what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? And then, when we were at the top, the only thing I kept repeating was “Wow! Wow!"

Update. And a few months later we made an even steeper (in every sense) ascent - to !

No. 2. Mount Batur, Lake Batur and Agung Volcano

All three of these Bali attractions can be seen from one observation deck. It was these views that we went to admire. 🙂 You can drive along the road and change the angle, take various photos at other observation platforms. It's good to arrive in the afternoon to take daytime photos of Bali's sights and photos of Bali at sunset.

Sights of Bali: Mount Agung and Lake Batur. Photos are all from the same cafe))

No. 1. Lake Bratan and Ulun Danu Temple

This place was my favorite even before the trip - after hundreds of viewings photo Bali. I was very afraid of disappointment because Ulun Danu Temple seemed to me the most mystical place islands, a place of strength and beauty. But when we arrived here, to say that the impressions fully met our expectations would be an understatement.

Lake Bratan and Pura Ulun Danu Temple on the map of Bali- at the end of the article.

Sights of Bali: Pura Ulun Danu Temple on Lake Bratan. Our favorite place on the island.

You look not only at the beautiful temple, but also enjoy a quiet walk in the park, lying on the grass near Lake Bratan, you admire the mountains and the clouds sliding down from them. And then you definitely get on a motorboat and drive around everything Lake Bratan, you see how the clouds touch the water, form bizarre shapes, and everything around is as it only happens in films. But now it’s not in films, it’s with you, and you feel so happy that you’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth...

Have you ever seen how the clouds fall right onto the water and then reveal to you one beautiful place after another? While walking along the high-mountain lake Bratan, this is also possible...

MAP OF BALI WITH ATTRACTIONS

As you understand, dear readers, all these Bali attractions we drove around ourselves, on our own two wheels))) So that you can find these beautiful places, we have compiled map of Bali with attractions:

AND A LITTLE MORE ABOUT TRAVEL

In the west, Bali is separated by a 2-kilometer strait from Java, the most populous island on the planet. From the east, the Lombok Strait, 35 km long, separates Bali from the island of Lombok.

Bali is also the name of a province of Indonesia, part of the administrative region of the Lesser Sunda Islands, the largest island nation in the world. Main city on the island and the center of the province is Denpasar. The island of Bali is part of the Greater Sunda archipelago, consisting of 17,800 islands, of which about 10 thousand do not even have their own name. And many interisland seas are not indicated on most maps.

In prehistoric times, the highly rugged landscape of the region was shaped by intense tectonic collisions of continental plates, which caused unprecedented volcanoes that influenced the climate of the entire planet. Volcanic activity continues to this day. The famous eruption of the Krakatoa volcano today changed the color of sunsets and sunrises across the planet for many months. And the explosion during its eruption is recognized as the loudest sound that a person could ever hear. The roll of unprecedented thunder was heard at a distance of two thousand kilometers. Bali, despite its small size (140 by 70 km), also has three active volcano: Agung, Batur and Bro. Although not on the archipelago at all.

Nature of the island

The so-called Wallace Line runs through the island, dividing the flora and fauna of tropical Asia and the natural areas of Australia and New Guinea. It determines the sharp contrast of vegetation in different parts of the island. In the west there is tropical evergreen vegetation. In the north there are deciduous forests, in inaccessible mountainous areas there are savannas and mountain woodlands.

There are a large variety of palm trees on the island: coconut, borassa, and sugar. The banana palm, considered a sacred tree in Bali, feeds many monkeys, bats and squirrels. Trees with valuable wood: balsa, ebony, teak. Some types of bamboo have a trunk up to half a meter in diameter. The island is filled with fragrant smells all year round thanks to the countless varieties of flowering shrubs and trees: hibiscus, bougainvillea, jasmine, pink laurel, magnolia, orchid. Local residents handle any seeds with caution. Accidentally thrown, they immediately sprout in unnecessary places.

Features of local residents

4 million people live in Bali. The population of the island is a Hindu society in a Muslim country, with its own traditions and prohibitions. For example, it is prohibited to: be in a public place in open clothing (sleeveless outerwear and shorts), point a finger at a person, show close relationships (hug, kiss), touch another person’s head, express anger and resentment, scream. Sitting cross-legged is considered a great disrespect.

Indonesia is the most amazing country in the world, combining the titles of the largest island country and the most colorful in nature.

When going on vacation to distant Indonesia, be sure to spend a few days on the island of Bali: discover the mysterious beauty of the art of batik and enjoy the spectacle of theatrical mass dances Kecak and Barong Kris.

So, if you are captivated by a distant Indonesia Bali will be a great start to a trip around the archipelago. The Island of the Gods (as Bali is called) has a length of about 100 kilometers and is located near Singapore (to the south) and Java (a little to the east) and an hour's flight from Jakarta.

The magic of Bali

Blue lagoons with crystal clear waters, surrounded by the greenery of tropical jungles, will seem like Eden for tourists. Such beauty simply cannot be expressed in words, but if you look at photo of Bali island, then make sure it's real paradise.

Arriving at Bali vacation you are provided with the most varied. Must visit main temple Kingdom of Mengwi - Taman Ayun, the majestic Ulun Danu Temple, which is located on Lake Bratan. Thrill-seekers can admire the majesty of the Batur volcano, in whose crater there is a botanical garden.

In addition, when you find yourself in Indonesia, you can’t help but go see Balinese dances, which are entire theatrical performances. The theme for the dances is the eternal theme of the struggle between good and evil; for example, the Kecak dance shows a scene from the epic poem Ramayana (Dewi Shinta, kidnapped by the villain Rahwana, is tried to be rescued by a group of monkeys led by Hanoman); about 150 performers in national costumes create a unique spectacle at sunset at the Uluwatu Temple.

Another popular dance is Barong Kris: a mythical animal fights an evil witch; the dance captivates the audience with its riot of colors and dynamic movements. Such a spectacle will be equally interesting for both adults and children, so if you come to holidays in Bali with children, have no doubt: they will also enjoy this trip.

Therefore, lovers of summer heat are guaranteed a wonderful beach holiday on Bali in summer and autumn, and those who like to walk barefoot on wet asphalt during warm “blind” rains will have a wonderful vacation in winter and early spring.

Geography

The island's area is 5,780 km², its length is 150 km from east to west and 80 km from north to south. The so-called Wallace Line, stretching from Bali and Lombok in an easterly direction, serves as the boundary between the flora and fauna of tropical Asia and the natural areas of Australia and New Guinea.

Relief

Climate

Flora and fauna

There are 4 types of forests in Bali: tropical evergreen forests in the west, deciduous forests in the northwest in inaccessible areas, savannah forests and mountain forests. Wet evergreen forests are represented in the Bali Barat Park (translated as “Western Bali”). Here you can find rare plant species, huge centuries-old trees that are under protection. There are many plants of the ficus family, fig and banana groves. Deciduous forests grow in the northwestern part of Bali. They change their foliage depending on the season, and sapota trees predominate among this flora. Mountain vegetation is rarely located above 1500 m above sea level; it is mainly casuarina and phyla. Banana palms are sacred in Bali, they grow very well, reproducing by roots, and feed many animals: monkeys, squirrels, bats. Rare cave crab Karstama balicum listed in the IUCN Red List. Palm trees are particularly well represented in Bali. The leaves of borassa palms, dried and pressed, are used to make “lontars” on which sacred texts are written. Sugar palm leaves are used to make bouquets that are brought to temples as ritual offerings. There are also other types of trees, for example, ebony or ebony, as well as balsa wood, which is extremely light and a convenient material for traditional masks. There are many bamboo trees, some species of which reach 30-40 cm in diameter. Found almost all over the island, bamboo is also a versatile building material for the Balinese.

Landscape architecture has become a real industry. The abundance of labor and fertile soil, in which everything planted easily takes root, contributes to the development of horticulture, especially in the south of the island and in the Bedugul region. Red, pink and white hibiscus, jasmine, bougainvillea, white and pink laurels, water lilies, lotuses and quite exotic plants such as Ingsoca, cempaka (yellow magnolia), manori and orchids.

Population

A total of 4,225,384 people live on the island (2014). Since the beginning of the 21st century, the island's population has increased by more than a million people.

Bali is a Hindu society living in a Muslim country and constantly in contact with foreigners. All this only fuels interest in local customs. The Balinese themselves are quite proud of their traditions and usually follow a strict code of conduct.

Cities

  • Denpasar is the capital and largest city of the island.
  • Singaraja is an industrial city in the north of the island.
  • Kuta is a resort city.
  • Ubud is the center of Balinese artistic life.

Religion

The majority of Balinese (83.5% of the population) profess a local form of Hinduism called Agama Hindu Dharma. 13.3% of the population is Muslim. They live mainly in Denpasar, Singaraja and small coastal towns. These figures do not include “temporary” migrants from other parts of Indonesia. There are few Christians (1.7%) and Buddhists (0.5%) - these are the Chinese, the indigenous population, as well as foreigners living on the island (British, Australians, Dutch, French, Italians, Russians and others).

In total there are about 20 thousand temples in Bali [ ] .

Transport

The central and most important transport hub on the island is Ngurah Rai Airport. This is a modern and well-equipped airport located near Denpasar, 3 km from Kuta, 15 km from Nusa Dua and 12 km from Sanur. There are many taxis serving it. In 2013, a new, large international terminal was put into operation at the airport. In 2014, the terminal serving local flights was significantly modernized.

A project has also begun to build a new airport in the north of the island.

A common and inexpensive form of transport on the island is bemo, small minibuses. There are several bus companies.

The most common transport among local population- moped or scooter.

Numerous agencies are available to tourists and guests of the island, where you can rent cars and motorcycles and move around the island on your own.

Tourism

After recognition of independence, tourism was rather poorly developed, and the infrastructure was in its infancy. Even in the days of hippies, who flocked here from all over the world, there were only small bungalows without electricity on the beaches of Kuta, cheap rooms without amenities and seafood dishes for a few cents. However, in Sanur, tour operators were already developing tourism for the rich. The Indonesian government, whose economy was highly dependent on oil exports, needed to find other sources of income and greatly contributed to the development of the tourism industry.

At first, these efforts were aimed at changing in the eyes of the entire world community the unsightly image that was attached to the ruling elite of Indonesia after the military coup.

A professional analysis of the situation in Bali and a tourism development plan was made in 1969. The project was financed by the UN under the guarantee of the World Bank. Particular emphasis was placed on the Bukit Badung area. In 1978, Balinese Governor Ida Bagus Mantra invited interested parties to pay attention to the island's rich culture. Since that time, music, dance, religious festivals, sculpture and painting have played as much a role in the tourism business as the constant improvement of infrastructure. The airport has been reconstructed, luxury hotels and modest inexpensive hotels are being built to cover the entire social spectrum of travel lovers. Rice fields are being drained and water pipelines are being built in the driest areas. Inexpensive tourism has been replaced by luxury tourism. Now world-famous stars come to Sanur for wedding ceremonies, and European ministers spend their holidays at the Mediterranean Club in Nusa Dua.

From 2001 to 2008, the annual women's tennis tournament Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic was held in Bali, in 2009-2011 it received the status of the Tournament of Champions and became known as the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions.

From 18 to 26 October 2008, Bali hosted the 1st Asian Beach Games, which took place on the beaches of Kuta, Nusa Dua, Sanur and Mertasari, and the island of Serangan became the venue for sailing competitions.

In 2009, the XVI Asian Archery Championship took place in Bali.

Bali has several golf courses. In 1994, the Bali Golf and Country Club's golf course was chosen to host the Alfred Dunhill Masters.

Several marathons are held annually. Including the international BII Maybank Marathon with more than 5,000 participants, Bali Beach Run.

“Gods! Perfume! Demons! “I am all yours,” we mentally scream, as soon as we see from the window of the airplane cabin an approaching piece of land in the shape of a heart: the plane is landing. Mystical Island“Thousands of temples”... Bali Airport is easily recognizable by the surfboards on the baggage conveyors and the familiar aroma of incense in the offering baskets on the way to Duty Free. Everything invites you to experience this mysterious energy of this far from simple ancient island.

For some, Bali is a paradise on Earth, embodying all the ideas of an easy life, full of affordable pleasures for every taste: beach parties, three hundred and sixty-five days of summer, downshifting, traveling along dazzling coastlines, volcanoes, rice terraces... For others - a place of spiritual practices, yoga, tantra, meditation. A point of cleansing and rebooting in the spirit of “Eat. Pray. Love." For others, these are the best surf spots all year round and unforgettable diving. Everyone comes to Bali with different expectations and budgets, but no one leaves the same.

Even after becoming one of the most popular resorts in the world, Bali does not lose its exoticism and strong connection with the traditions of the ancient Hindus who landed here before our era.

For me, Bali is a second home. And I would like to talk about this.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by crowds of taxi drivers eager to take you anywhere in Bali. They all expect trade that will captivate the Asian soul (a matter of honor). Get ready that the price initially set can be safely reduced by three times, and at the same time everyone will be happy with the deal. Unfortunately, well-known online taxi ordering services (Uber, GoJek, Grab taxi) do not operate at the airport and are not allowed access here. Therefore, you can book a trip directly with the driver or at the taxi service desk.

By bus

If you really want to save a lot of money, then you can from Jakarta (or from another large city in Java or Lombok) take a Sarbajita bus and spend about 24 hours on the road for only 25 USD.

You can choose the comfort of VIP-class, business, executive or economy; of course, the entire cabin is air-conditioned and modern. Tickets can be purchased at local tourist shops. If you are traveling in economy class, it is better to be light, because sometimes there is no luggage compartment However, be prepared for your neighbors to freely smoke non-stop and play guitar the entire way. This is the Asian fun of hours of driving along the narrow roads of Java, so famous for its crazy traffic.

You can find such buses at any international station and happily get to Bus terminal Ubung Denpasar, administrative center Bali, from where you can easily take a taxi to the hotel.

By car

Traveling by car is a great adventurous decision. You can transport it by ferry to the port of Gilimanuk in northwestern Bali for a modest fee of about 15 USD. This is how we had a great time traveling around East Java on a small carimun.

By ferry

Even if you choose to travel by bus, part of the journey will have to be taken by ferry, and this is a real tourist life hack. Initiation as a traveler.

Java has the port of Ketapang (that's where we need to go), close to which there is a bus station and a train station with connections to Probolinggo (for Bromo), Yogyakarta, Malang, Bandung, as well as the capital of the country. Ferries from this port to Bali run every 15 minutes, and the journey takes just over half an hour.

I hasten to warn you: ferries and boats in Indonesia have not gained a reliable reputation, and if you have already entered this “slippery” path of the tourist-hiker, get ready for crowded and often dirty cabins and... novice captains.

However, the road to the port of Gilimanuk on the island of Bali has many bonuses, ranging from the price (about 7 USD) to the ability to transport mopeds and bicycles for a small surcharge. Gilimanuk Port in northern Bali is not known for its spectacular attractions, so you can catch a local taxi to go to your hotel.

Visa

A visa to Bali is a topic of discussion and heated discussion on forums for freelancers, tour operators and independent travelers. However, everything is simple.

If you have serious plans for a one-way trip, then before leaving you should take care of a tourist or social visa, which will be valid for 6 months. The difference is that for a social visa at the Indonesian consulate in Moscow you will be asked for a letter from your sponsor, an Indonesian citizen, and presumably your beloved friend, inviting you to visit your homeland. In Bali, such “friends” can easily be found for a small fee of 15 USD at special visa agencies for expats. Tourist visas, according to the innovation, can now also be extended if the same agencies are already on site to help with a sponsorship letter.

There are also easier ways to obtain a visa: a free stamp upon arrival at the airport, and the country is open to you for the next 30 days. And if your plans are a little longer, you can pay 35 USD and stay on the island for 60 days, extending your visa after 1 month of stay.

I, like many people living on the island, choose a social visa, flying out of the country every 6 months to a city where there is an Indonesian embassy, combining a pleasant trip with a useful necessity. During these three days you can enjoy the city of the future, Singapore, or take a cruise to the islands around Kota Kinabalu, you can walk along the streets of George Town in Penang or look at the city from the high-rise buildings of Kuala Lumpur.

Main attractions. What to see

The incomprehensibility of the island is that even long-livers, expats and Indonesians, never cease to discover more and more new places and secret spots. Even famous landscapes appear in different colors every time.

Centuries ago, the ancient islanders created an inexplicable culture, endowed every corner of the island with magic, and we are still solving their mysteries...

Top 5

If you're in Bali, your must list should definitely include time for:

Beaches. Which ones are better

Black volcanic sand... garbage beaches... three-meter waves... If this is not what you came to Bali for, then this is for you:

Temples. Which ones are worth visiting?

An island of thousands of temples of unique architecture, once born under the influence of Hinduism, animism and mushroom culture... Just as it is impossible to visit everything, it is also impossible to miss the most magical of them:

  • Pura Tirta Empul. One of the most sacred places in Bali. According to legend, the god Indra struck the earth and opened the source of immortality. Today there are baths for ablutions. Each of the 15 fountains has its own name and a special ritual purpose: spiritual cleansing, cleansing from evil, antidote, etc. It is located in the center of the island, in the Tempaxiring district.
  • Pura Luhur Lempuyang. Fairytale heavenly temple. The lovers climb 1,700 steps to cement their union high above the ground. The name of this temple is translated as “dizziness,” and, indeed, one’s head can be turned not only by the painful ascent, but also by the insane happiness of contemplating beauty.
  • Pura Goa Lawah. At sunset you can watch a monstrously beautiful sight: flocks of bats fly out of the caves. According to legend, the cave is also home to the Basuki dragon. Many people also come here to cleanse themselves on the nearby beach after the cremation ceremony of the dead.
  • Pura Tanah Lot. A water temple known for its spectacular sunset views. Built on a rock in the middle of the sea, Tanah Lot is cut off from land at high tide, making it so attractive to visitors. By the way, you can read a note about him on our website.
  • Pura Luhur Uluwatu. The waves of the Indian Ocean wash over the coast, and you are standing on a cliff. This is Uluwatu, famous for its pre-sunset kecak dances, mischievous monkeys, gardens and observation decks overlooking the entire Bukit Peninsula.

It is very important to come to church with your knees covered. This is not only a requirement of the banjars standing at the entrance, but also a tribute to the people receiving you. “Exposed legs are unclean,” say the Balinese.

Ticket prices usually do not exceed 30,000 IDR (less than 2 USD), and often simply invite you to make a voluntary donation to maintain the temple.

Food. What to try

Although Indonesians are proud of their national cuisine, but, frankly speaking, gastronomic pleasure is not worth coming to Indonesia for. However, of course, there is something to pamper yourself here.

As in all Asian countries, almost no dish here is complete without rice. Local residents always touchingly ask me what I had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And they are sincerely surprised not to hear about rice. For them, a dish without it is not food. Nasi campur, Nasi goreng, Nasi ayam, Nasi uduk - have you already guessed how “Nasi” is translated?

In addition, there is a huge abundance of seafood and fish markets. Restaurants for vegans, vegetarians, raw foodists, mouse eaters... and “tasty eaters”. The main thing is not to enter dubious-looking warungs - you may encounter things worse than monosodium glutamate.

The abundance of fruits here pleasantly pleases the Russian eye: bananas, papaya, mangosteens, mangoes, rose apples, sirsak, rambutans, dragon fruit, snake fruit - simply the happiness of raw foodists. You can learn more about fruits in other articles. Here I just want to note that you should be careful with your choice, chemicals have reached this country, so out of habit you can get poisoned by a sweet, delicious, aromatic watermelon.

Safety. What to watch out for

The main rule: do not swim behind the buoys. Both figuratively and literally.

  • Ocean. This is an all-powerful element that takes away not only surfers and sailors, but also simply swimmers who, through carelessness, went too far and could not get out of the abyss of the sucking current. Tourists die every year. For this reason, you should only swim before sunset and in areas marked with flags, where lifeguards can see you.
  • Tales. The ambiance of high-speed driving, freedom given by the touch of the wind, the whistling of wheels on night roads... It’s not worth neglecting a helmet. Even if you are confident in your own dexterity, no one guarantees the abilities of others. Girls should not ride alone in the dark if they don’t want to be thrown off their bike because of a European wallet. Distressed workers from Java and Lombok come to the island. You shouldn’t provoke them with naked bodies and iPhones carelessly sticking out of your pockets.
  • Alcohol. In dubious establishments, drugs can be mixed into cocktails, which can cause loss of reason and memory. The victims find themselves beaten the next day in their robbed villa.
  • Payment cards. You should choose a cash withdrawal terminal extremely carefully. In some popular terminals tourist places Reading devices are built in. This was also observed in minimarkets. Today you withdrew money at Eco Beach, and tomorrow somewhere in Lombok in a five-star hotel the card will instantly be reset. The police, of course, will listen to you and allow you to fill out a statement, but as soon as you close the door, they humbly state among themselves: “karma.”

Bali should not be branded as a den of criminals; it is a very peaceful island for those who are careful in their actions. Kuta is your choice. There's never a dull moment here: active night life, shops, surf schools - every meter is adapted for tourists.

  • Do you love fashionable restaurants, beach clubs, atmospheric cafes, glamorous society and is this what you expect from your vacation? And this is what the island can offer. Seminyak. However, be prepared that you won’t find that same Eat spirit in either Kuta or Seminyak. Pray. Love, the locals cleverly changed it to Eat. Pay. Leave.
  • Looking for a balance between fun and pleasure rice terraces and already know how to surf? Then you will love Canggu and its surroundings - Petitengen, Umalas, Kerobokan. Just like in Kuta and Seminyak, life here is in full swing, but at a completely different rhythm. Beaches with black volcanic sand, surf spots for intermediate-level lovers, houses with rice terraces outside the window, supermarkets, breakfasts in hipster cafes... But the most important thing that makes Canggu special is the people: designers, freelance artists, musicians. This is why Changu is dear to me, it’s so easy to find like-minded people here.
  • Or perhaps you are an experienced surfer or just love beautiful beaches. Then only the Bukit Peninsula. Many years ago, this small island was joined by mangrove forests to Bali, and it still has its own microclimate. For real waves, people come to Padang-Padang, Uluwatu, Dreamland, Bingin, Green Bowl, Balangan... Each of the fifteen beaches of the peninsula is no more than 15 minutes by scooter. 15 minutes and every day you can enjoy rocky shores, snow-white sand, turquoise ocean, fantastic sunsets.
  • The best places to relax with small children are and Jimbaran. Here are the calmest beaches and comfortable infrastructure. known as one big resort. Our compatriots very often choose this area for an all-inclusive holiday. By the way, you can compare offers and prices for such a vacation.
  • Are you a diver? Then head east: to Karangasem and Amed. We come to these places with a group of friends to snorkel and dive to the bottom (there are Russian diving schools). These are new lands on the tourist map of Bali. Bali Agha live here - the indigenous Balinese, who have carefully observed the traditions of “Agama Hindu Dharma” from time immemorial. Villages untouched by modern civilization. There is no need to stay here for long, the road invites you to continue your journey north to Singaraja, an even more secluded area where time stands still. At dawn here in Lovina, you can see pink dolphins swimming in schools close to the shore.
  • Did your spiritual path and search for enlightenment bring you to Bali? Then you are in the heart of the island, in. Retreats, yoga and meditation studios, health centers, restaurants that please the eyes of nutritionists... And, of course, the air saturated with art. Probably the soul of Bali is somewhere here. It’s not for nothing that the island is said to be located in a “place of power.”
  • Taxi. What features exist

In Bali we use mobile services which are very cheap but not allowed everywhere. In some areas, the banjaris (village council) bans these taxis and even blocks online apps to curb competition.

    Transport rental

Renting a scooter costs about 50 USD per month, renting a passenger car costs about 150–200 USD. It is, of course, easier to get around on a scooter: the island is increasingly crowded with traffic, which causes traffic jams. Finding a local renter is not difficult; the main thing is to have an international driving license, which the police will definitely ask you one day on the road. If previously it was possible to pay off with a tiny fine (starting from 4 USD), now any bribes are excluded: police officers simply take away documents for transport until the owner buys them back. You can search for international companies providing car rental services in Bali and get acquainted with the cost, for example.

To avoid misunderstandings when returning the bike after the contract expires, it is important to take photographs so that you are not charged with unnecessary damage to the vehicle.

    * Take care of yourself on the roads!

Four passengers is not the limit
