Welcome to Sithonia!

Among the places worth seeing in Sithonia: old town, fortress and church of St. Athanasius in Toroni, windmills in Sykia, 16th century church. in Nikiti, from which the central nave with wall paintings, the Church of the Holy Mother of God (1863) with a noteworthy carved iconostasis and much more have been preserved.

The history of the peninsula, a small part of which has been revealed by archaeological excavations, goes back centuries, to the time when the inhabitants of Chalkis created their settlements here: Galipso, Toroni, Sarti, Singo.

Large landowners and peasants working in the farmsteads of monasteries, livestock breeders and fishermen, beekeepers and settlers from Asia Minor created today's image of Sithonia - a tourist resort where both residents of Northern Greece and foreigners relax. The architecture of the coastal villages of the peninsula is still dominated by the style of the 70s, when most of them were built. Coasts and pine forests are the main reason why the peninsula is chosen for summer holidays. Sithonia offers an alternative holiday - the opportunity to spend your free time in the lap of nature in numerous well-equipped campsites, without overburdening your budget and maintaining your moral peace at a high level. Numerous beach bars make the peninsula attractive to young people.

Resorts of Sithonia– the main attractions of the peninsula

Moving around Sithonia from one end to the other, you can learn many secrets that this real paradise of Northern Greece still hides!

A large selection of beaches awaits you: Ai Yanni, Kastri, Kovio, the famous Kalogria beach with its green waters, fine sand and beach bars, Spatya, the huge coast of Elia with its many hotels, Lagomandra, Tripotamos, the beautiful coasts of Armenisti, Manasi, Tristinika .

The central asphalt road will take you to Toroni, a coastal tourist village with its beautiful coastline, the fortress of Lykythos, as if carved by an inspired sculptor into the rocks of Karidi, and the ruins of ancient Toroni. Shallow green-blue water completes this beautiful picture. According to Thucydidis, there was once a temple of Athena in Lykythos.

2.3 km from Nikiti is Panagia Bay, the sea pier of the village of Agios Nikolaos. From here small pleasure boats go on excursions to the coast of St. Athos. Fishing boats and ships moor at Skala, which take those who wish to the island of Diaporos. Following the bay is Vourvourou. On the way to it, on the right, you will see the beaches of Latur, Lagonisi, Fanari, Galini, Karagatsi and the beautiful Livari, with its long, pine-covered “tongue” of land jutting deep into the sea and creating a small lagoon.

Vourvourou– one of the most popular resorts on the east coast of Sithonia. Located 8.5 km from Panagia Bay. There is a lot of greenery and large organized campsites. As for its beaches, Kavourotripes and Karidi deserve more than a “5” rating. Near Vourvourou there are exotic small bays of Micro and Megalo Karidi with magnificent white sand, rocks of beautiful bright colors, green water, beach bars: these bays are popular with tourists in the summer. A little lower, on the road to the shores of Koutlumousi and Zografos, hides the most beautiful coast of Sithonia - Kavourotripes. This is a magical place: small coves with turquoise water and white sand, carved rocks and pine trees, a mermaid carved on a huge rock in the last bay, nestled next to the water. During the high season, this coastline is filled with vacationers.

Leaving Vourvourou and continuing your journey, you will pass through Platanitsi to Sarti. In its place there was once a farmstead of the Xiropotamou monastery on Holy Athos. Even just driving along this road, you will be captivated by the views of the endless white sandy shore and turquoise water bay opposite the green, pine-covered mountains. Sarti is as if marked by the gods and “awarded” with the best view of Holy Athos, dominating the horizon. If you have seen any picture or photograph with a white sandy beach and Saint Athos, it means it was taken in Sarti.

The next huge coastline - Sykya, or Sykyas Rock, at the end of which there are small beautiful coves. To the right of the road is the mountain village of Sykia with a very interesting history. It is mentioned in manuscripts of the 14th century. Suffice it to say that in the Byzantine era the village became a courtyard of St. Athos and its residents worked there as workers and security guards (policemen), they were also pirates, and later made a significant contribution to the national liberation war in Chalkidiki. And when the Turks burned their village, they participated in the struggle as part of the troops of Southern Greece, and always remained free and independent. Worth seeing in the village are the schoolhouse from 1920, the even older schoolhouse from 1870, and the Church of St. Athanasius, which was built in 1819, burned down twice, and was rebuilt again in 1861.

From here the road will take you to the beautiful coastal village of Kalamitsi, with its sandy beach, taverns, campsites and beach bars.

But we'll examine it a little later.

The other side of the peninsula should not be ignored. Resorts in the east stand out:

Where is the best place to stay while relaxing in Sithonia?
Of course, it’s better to stay closer to the sea, to the beach:
– you don’t waste time getting to the sea
– you don’t sit on the beach all day – I wanted to and went home to take a shower.

Now I’m telling you where the best beaches are in Sithonia.
All beaches are marked on the map and clicking on the mark opens a window with a photo and a link to the description.

Review of the best beaches in Sithonia

Toroni has many taverns, several shops, a fish market in the morning, and a fruit shop.

There are also several seafood taverns on the shore and shops.
You can find and book an apartment or hotel in Trani Amuda.
I can recommend the Antigoni Beach Resort with spacious rooms.

Fteroti beach is sandy with convenient access to the sea for families with children.
There are no tourists or random people here - the entire coastline of the beach is cut between several households.

This is the great value of this place.
There are no waves at all in this place: the water is a mirror.

The beach adjacent to Livari is unnamed.
There are several motor boat rentals on the shore, and a little further on is the northern tip of the village of Vourvourou.

Sithonia is a unique pearl of Greece, the so-called “second finger”. This natural paradise is located in the Aegean Sea, between and Kassandra, washed from the east and west by the gulfs of Singitikos and Toronic, respectively. The Sithonia Peninsula is about 50 km long and 25 km wide, with a population of 13 thousand people. Here you can see a magnificent combination of untouched beaches, valleys and mountains. Both tourists and locals come here for a calm, measured holiday in small picturesque coastal resorts. The region is famous for its sandy beaches with crystal clear sea water and the surrounding relief cliffs. The beauty of the landscapes of Sithonia is so amazing that it seems like an unreal photo or a painted picture.

Cyclists, divers, and golf fans will appreciate the peninsula. There are many famous campsites along the rugged coastline with small coves ideal for swimming. However, if you think that Sithonia can only offer a beach holiday, then you are very mistaken. Medieval temples, ancient ruins and other historical monuments are located throughout the peninsula. Gourmets will be able to enjoy Greek cuisine, the freshest seafood and fine wines.

Climate of Sithonia

This part of Greece has a mild Mediterranean climate: warm winters give way to hot, dry summers. The mountain ranges surrounding the peninsula protect it from strong winds, so the waves here rise very rarely, and the water warms up well. Summer air temperatures usually range between +30…+36°C, although sometimes they reach +45°C. The air is quite dry and there is practically no noticeable heat. Coastal waters warm up to +25…+26°C. The most hospitable weather in Sithonia is from mid-April to the end of June and from the beginning of September to the end of October.

Main resorts of Sithonia

Nikiti is the administrative center and largest settlement of Sithonia. Like most local towns, it is divided into an old village located in the interior of the peninsula, and a coastal settlement that has become a famous resort. A settlement of just a few houses was formed in the 14th century, but by the 15th century the population had grown and Nikiti acquired the status of an independent village. In 1821, during the Greek Revolution, the Turks completely destroyed this settlement. However, by 1827 the village was rebuilt. Today this place has a developed infrastructure and combines recreation both at sea and in the mountains - Mount Itamos rises very close. You can take walks, bike rides, or go up in a jeep.

If you visit the old village, be sure to try real Greek coffee, see the Church of St. Nikita, built in 1867, and stroll through the narrow streets with houses made in the style of traditional Macedonian architecture. Also, Nikiti is the largest beekeeping center in Macedonia.

In the western part of the coast, the busiest is the small resort town of Neos Marmaras. It got its name from refugees from Turkish Marmaris who settled here, and on the site of a fishing village, New (Neos) Marmaras grew up. There is a church, a port, numerous cozy restaurants, residential buildings and apartments for rent. Archaeological finds in this area indicate an ancient Byzantine settlement, from which the remains of an ancient fortress have survived to this day. While in this city, try to visit the traditional Greek village of Parthenonas, located on a hill of 350 m and extending 6 km deep into the peninsula. The local flavor and unique architecture of residential buildings have been preserved here. From here you can see the island of Kelifos and the Toroneian Gulf. From Parthenonas there is a famous hiking trail leading to the Itamos Nature Reserve.

A few kilometers to the south there is another ancient settlement - Toroni, dating back to the 8th century BC. Now it is a popular quiet resort aimed at family vacations. A developed tourist infrastructure, a beautiful clean sea, sandy beaches awarded the Blue Flag, and the absence of big waves attract travelers with small children here. However, there are also cultural and historical attractions: the remains of the ancient Acropolis, the walls of the Lykythos fortress, the Temple of St. Athanasius. At the bottom of the sea, a few kilometers from the coast, lie the ruins of an ancient city.

In the summer season, Sarti becomes the most populous village in the eastern part of the peninsula. It is replete with many hotels, apartments, cafes, restaurants and bars to suit every taste - every tourist will find something of their own. Many taverns are located right on the coast. This is a great place for a budget holiday with affordable prices. From everywhere there are beautiful views of the majestic Mount Athos. There are few man-made attractions in Sarti - not far from the port, there is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A small functioning chapel has been erected on the beach.

The resort is suitable for inexpensive shopping: souvenir shops and shops offer a large selection of beach accessories and clothing at low prices. The three-kilometer Sarti beach, with clear water, fine sand and a gentle entrance to the water, is equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, but wild, undeveloped areas are also left. Waves are very rare here.

Beaches of Sithonia

The coastline of the peninsula is very long and has a large number of beaches, 6 of which have received awards for developed infrastructure and cleanliness. Some are located in close proximity to the resorts described above, while others are located far from the villages. The best beaches in Sithonia are: Sikya, Sarti, Toroni, Karidi, Tripotamos, Tristinika, Lagomandra, Elia, Antemous, Armenistis, Sithonia.

Almost all beaches are located in bays, so they do not have big waves. The coast along its entire length has both sandy and pebble shores. Most beaches are equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas, toilets, changing rooms, bars, etc. Here you will be offered a lot of water activities, and in the town of Tagarades there is Waterland, a huge popular water park whose attractions will delight both children and adults.

Those who like a secluded holiday can swim and sunbathe in numerous secluded coves, away from prying eyes.

Entertainment and shopping

Sithonia has not only historical sights from different millennia, but also natural beauties that every traveler should visit. First of all, these are the world's largest vineyards, located in Porto Carras. The rocky picturesque bays of Kartlaia and the Itamos Nature Reserve on Mount Dragudeli also attract attention.

No trip abroad is complete without shopping, be it a fur coat or a refrigerator magnet. Shopping districts with a large number of shops are located only in the large cities of the peninsula - Nikiti, Neos Marmaras and Sarti. As a rule, tourists bring olive oil, olives, ceramics, natural cosmetics, honey and alcohol from Sithonia.

Olives in Greece are sold everywhere - in markets and supermarkets; they can be purchased by weight, in vacuum packaging or in jars. You will be offered a huge number of varieties, but before buying them, it is better to try them first. With olive oil it’s already more difficult; it’s worth remembering that cold-pressed oil is the best.

There are several popular places in Sithonia for the production of quality honey. One of the leaders in Europe in the production of this sweet is Nikiti. Its inhabitants have been engaged in beekeeping for more than 500 years. Mostly pine honey is made here.

It is also worth bringing metaxa (local cognac), national wine, and raki (grape vodka) from Greece.

As a Greek gift, you can buy cosmetics; here they are made from natural raw materials based on olive oil. The simplest such souvenir is Greek soap, which is sold both individually and in large sets.

Sithonia surprises and captivates, relaxes and gives strength. Once you get here, you will want to come back again. Beautiful landscapes, stunning scenic views and a lot of unforgettable experiences are guaranteed at the resorts of this magical peninsula.
