The city is famous for its cultural atmosphere supported by the Jazz Festival in the summer and the Classical Music Festival in the Villa Romana in September.

The Torre a Mare tower rises on a rocky ledge, the history of which goes back to the Middle Ages. A narrow winding path leads to it.

But far from everywhere on the mainland you do not feel like in paradise, the Amalfi Coast is, no doubt, an amazing place ..

In the summer of 2016, my family and I made an amazing trip through Italy and visited some of the most desirable corners of this beautiful country. I'll start my story with where the beautiful Amalfitana is located.

South of Naples, there is a beautiful area along the Mediterranean Sea, on which there are very fabulous cities. Actually, the road along the Gulf of Salerno from Sorrento towards Positano and up to Salerno is this very Amalfitana. And Amalfitana is the name received in honor of the city of Amalfi, the largest city that is located on this route.

Previously, little was known about Positano and Amalfi, but now they are desirable corners of paradise for many independent travelers. Positano is very popular with celebrities, Paul McCartney came here during our stay, and before that, Leonardo DiCaprio honored Positano with his visit. I'm not talking about the fact that there are villas of world-famous artists such as Sophia Loren and the famous director of the legendary film "Romeo and Juliet" - Franco Zeffirelli.

We started our journey towards Amalfi from a place called Colli Di Fontanelli:

From here, from the Sorrentine Peninsula, the beauty of the Gulf of Solerno opened up to our eyes, but only when we got closer we were able to appreciate how amazing this place is.

The first observation deck worth stopping at is located opposite the private islands in the Mediterranean Sea, which are called the Li Galli Archipelago.

The archipelago consists of one large island of Gallo Lungo and two small almost adjacent islands; from the land, the archipelago looks like a single whole. In the 4th century, a watchtower was erected on the island, which is called the Tower of Aragon. By the way, in the article on which we rested during our big trip to Italy, we visited the castle, which is also called Aragonese. In 1922, a very famous ballet dancer in the world of art, Leonid Myasin, bought an island in the archipelago called Gallo Lungo. At that time, the islands belonged to the municipality of Positano. On the island, at the initiative of Myasin, a dance floor and a villa were built, surrounded by marvelous gardens. In 1988, after the death of the maestro, the island passed into the possession of Rudolf Nureyev, no less famous in the world of ballet. In the 90s, Rudolf Nureyev died, and the very influential and wealthy owner of luxury hotels in Sorrento, Giovanni Rossi, bought the island. Now there is a comfortable hotel on the archipelago, but it is simply impossible to get to it without the invitation of the owners.

We stayed in Sorrento for 3 nights during our trip. I won’t dwell on the story of Sorrento for a long time, since I’m dedicated to this city, I can only say that the rest here is not very diverse, but very measured and will appeal to calm couples of age who love luxury hotels, a private beach and views of the sea and Vesuvius .

From Sorrento along the Amalfi Coast it is convenient to travel by car, for example, on a rented one, but if for some reason you do not want to do this, then a bus service is at your disposal.

How to get to Amalfi

You can get from Sorrento to the city of Amalfi in an hour and a half, but you can go not to the final station. The fare costs 6.8 euros. The bus leaves from the stop on the square Piazza Giovanni Battista De Curtis near the railway station Circumvesuviana and makes the following stops along the way: Sorrento, Priora, Bv S.Agata, Colli Fontanelle, S.Agnello, Piano Sorrento, Meta, Colli S.Pietro, Positano, Praiano, Grotta Smeraldo, Amalfi.

There are no famous sights or noisy entertainment here, but here you can enjoy the crystal clear sea and a relaxing holiday on one of the most beautiful coasts in Italy.

If you rent a car, then it will not be difficult for you to get to all the famous and desirable places, but to go on an excursion to the island of Capri, you will first need to get to the pier in Positano, from where boats depart regularly in this direction.

Ravello

I included Ravello in the list of cities, although this city is located high in the mountains a few kilometers from the coast. Nevertheless, it is difficult to imagine Amalfitan without him. By bus, the transport company SITA regularly runs from Amalfi to Ravello.

But although Amalfi has convenient transport accessibility and is attractive for its attractions, nevertheless, a beach holiday here is far from the best on the coast.

How to get to Amalfi from Naples

If your route lies in the city of Amalfi, and you arrived in Naples, then you will have to spend time, effort and money on the road.

The easiest, but tedious way is to take the train to Sorrento and from there take the SITA bus (see the beginning of the article) to Amalfi. This is if you are in Naples at the train station.

If you arrived at Naples airport, it is easier to take a bus to Sorrento directly from the airport, and from there take another bus to Amalfi.

How to get to Amalfi from Salerno

In addition to the transfer point Sorrento, you can arrive in Amalfi and through another city - Salerno. Trains leave regularly for Salerno from the Naples railway station, and from Salerno to Amalfi you can get by bus (running every hour) or by boat. The pier is located in Piazza della Concordia in Salerno and the road on the water will be much more pleasant and memorable than in a stuffy bus on winding roads.

In addition to public transport, no one has canceled car rental or transfer / taxi orders, but if in the case of renting a car, it all depends on your ability to drive along a mountain serpentine, then in the case of ordering a taxi, it all depends on whether you are ready to pay a lot significant money for this movement, if there are so many alternatives that are more humane in terms of money?!

If Amalfitana attracts you with views, but the main criterion for a place to live is a long beach and proximity to it, then you are in Maiori.

Maiori

It was in Maiori that I planned to stay, and not at all in Sorrento, since Maiori has the longest beaches on this coast, the sea is turquoise, and the cost of living in hotels does not go off scale.

Here, unlike the same Positano, you do not need to overcome the path to the sea from the hotels along a winding serpentine, the roads are gentle and convenient for tourists. In addition, an important advantage of the resort compared to the same Positano or Amalfi is the lower concentration of people, both on the beach and in the city in general.

You can get to Maiori not only from Sorrento, but also from Salerno (by SITA bus to Amalfi via Maiori).

Minori

Holidays in Minori are even more calm and peaceful than even in Maiori. Here you will not find supermarkets and multi-lane highways, rather small highly specialized shops (butchers and fishmongers) and a narrow serpentine of roads. Traveling in a rented car on such roads is difficult, but if you do not plan to sit all the time in a hotel, you will have to fork out at least a taxi to the pier in order to cover distances not by land, but by water. Boats run from Minori to Maiori and Amalfi. In addition, in the morning a boat departs from the pier to the island of Capri, just take care of the tickets in advance if you want the trip to take place, as there are enough people who want to.

There are no particularly remarkable ancient buildings in Minori, but there is a quiet and peaceful beach holiday and numerous lemon gardens that are fragrant throughout the area. The beach here is not long, as in Maiori, but since there are fewer people resting in Minori, there is enough space for everyone.

Salerno

Salerno is the second largest city in the Company region, centered on Naples.

From Naples to Salerno can be reached by bus or train.

Salerno is no longer a beautiful resort town, but a port city, where it is not as pleasant to relax as in Positano or. On the other hand, Salerno is rich in attractions and here you can combine beach and cultural holidays.

Cathedral of Salerno Salerno

The cathedral was erected in the 11th century, but was reconstructed as it was damaged in the 1980 earthquake. The remains of one of the evangelists Matthew are buried here. Today the Cathedral Collection is both a church and a museum.

Castello di Arechi (Salerno Castello di Arechi)

This fortress rises almost 300 meters above the sea and you need to get to it by bus or rented car, but the trip is worth it. Here is a museum, which presents weapons, a mint and ceramic creations of Italian masters.

Acquedotto Medieval

The ancient aqueduct in Salerno is a memory of the progress of the Italian engineers of the 9th century. Now scattered parts of this structure have been preserved and legends are being composed around it, including, of course, gloomy ones. For example, it is considered a bad omen to walk under an arch (part of a water pipe) if it gets dark outside, as one story says that the water pipe was built not by people, but by dark forces.

This is the main shopping street in Salerno, which is almost a kilometer long and runs through the historic part of the city.

On the Amalfi Coast you will find the sandy long beaches of Maiori and the heavenly coves of Positano and the slopes to the sea, equipped with hotels throughout the coast.

La Spiaggia Grande
