How to properly set up camp. Setting up a camp and surviving in nature How to make a camp with all the bells and whistles

To make your outdoor recreation comfortable, you need to take into account all the details of setting up a camp. Know how to camp and where to camp. Let's consider several options.

How to set up camp

Fishing

How to set up camp while fishing. In the summer, many anglers go fishing. It is necessary to set up the camp correctly so that the vacation brings positive emotions. Main attribute experienced fisherman- tent. Now there are many of them. Choose absolutely any one to suit your color and taste.

The main thing is that the tent is light and practical. There are entire tent structures that include a system of tents and a vestibule. It's up to you to choose. You need to think about what to sleep on. Now there are many sleeping bags and attributes for a comfortable and warm overnight stay. You can read how to choose the right sleeping bag in our article. Use air mattresses and blankets, they are comfortable.

If the car is with a trailer, you can easily afford an arsenal of any weight.

You need to choose a place. It is better not to pitch a tent near water; in the morning there will be thick fog from the water, as well as cold, and you will get cold and wet. Place your tent at least 10 meters from the water. Avoid large concentrations of trees. During a severe thunderstorm, a tree can be struck by lightning and you may be injured. After heavy rain, water flows onto the tent.

We set up a tent camp on a flat surface away from the water. In case of rain, dig a trench around the perimeter of the tent so that water accumulates and does not flow into the tent. Place your tent with the exit facing east. The wind blows mainly from the west, which threatens to freeze you at night. The sun rises in the east, which will keep you awake until noon. Dry blankets and mattresses after sleeping. Condensation often forms in a tent due to temperature changes; you can read how to deal with condensation on our website.

An important place is given to the hearth. When starting a fire, you need to take into account a lot of nuances. There are many types of fire. If you want to quickly warm up, you need to stack the firewood in a tent; a fire in such a structure produces great heat. To prepare fish soup or another dish, stack the firewood in the shape of sun rays, with the ends in the center and to the sides. This will give large area for cooking and will create the necessary heat. For ignition you should use birch or birch bark. Read the basic rules for making a fire to know all the subtleties.

Don't forget about safety. Especially about water safety. If your boat capsizes, don't panic. The main thing is to take a deep breath and rise to the surface without unnecessary panic. Turn the boat upside down and stay on it until help arrives if you are far from shore. Man consists of 80% water and is lighter than it. If you relax your body and take a deep breath, the person will float up.

Halt on the hike

How to set up camp on a hike. You should choose your hiking location carefully. You need to find a place in a sparse forest. It's good if it's a small clearing. Trees should be avoided, as a fire can cause a fire. Don't choose an inconvenient location or a location near water. There are always a lot of mosquitoes near water.

Tent location

Also ensure that there are no rotten or wet tree trunks near the tents, this will also attract mosquitoes and insects. You can put leaves and moss under the bottom of the tent to prevent it from becoming damp. You can also dig a trench around the tent to collect dew and water. Don't forget to close the entrance to your tent in the evening to prevent the inside of the tent from getting wet.

When the campsite is ready, you need to take care of the fire. It is better to light a fire from dry branches; spruce and pine are suitable. Oak and ash burn much longer, but more slowly. You can arrange a drying rack next to the fire. Build it from scrap materials or buy it at the store. If you don't need a fire at night, fill it with water or ash. If you are planning a long vacation, then leave a person on duty at the fire. Be careful not to start a fire.

Don't forget about safety rules. Use the ax and sharp objects carefully when cutting logs. Always keep an eye on the fire and be careful when preparing food. Take a first aid kit with the necessary medications on your hike. If a thunderstorm begins, you should not run in the rain with metal objects on you. No need to hide under the trees.

Don't forget to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Immediately set up a place where you will take the garbage and do not forget to remove it afterwards. If you do not have the opportunity to pick up all your garbage, then scorch it thoroughly and bury it in a safe place. This way it will decompose much faster. Do not wash dishes in the river, they will become dirty. Fill a large vat with water and wash the dishes in it. Then simply pour out the water and throw away any remaining food.

Camp with canopy

By the sea

We set up camp on the seashore. If you are a fan of tent camps on the seashore or on an island, then you need to be careful and know exactly how to set up camp by the sea. Holidays on an island, as a rule, involve a complete absence of civilization and signs of life. You should also be wary of wild animals. The tent complex should be set up further away, preferably on the grass.

You can follow the same rules as when going on a fishing trip. You need to be careful, watch the fire and collect debris from the very beginning. If you catch fish for food, be careful, there are many poisonous fish in the sea. It will be more difficult to maintain a fire in a sandy area, stock up on more firewood.

Where to camp

If you choose a quiet place close to populated areas, then you need to choose existing camping sites. Setting up camp in such places is easier. Focus on the number of days you plan to spend at the camp. Take light things, tents and backpacks. You shouldn't stand close to water either. Take a spot in the center of the camp if possible.

The benefits of rest.

Minuses.

Camp setup

Even if you are camping for just one night, take the time to ensure basic amenities. I'm not talking about the TV, but about more essential things - places to sleep and wash. Of course, no one would take a kitchen sink with them on a camping trip, but with some ingenuity, you can create many useful items from natural materials that are always on hand. Of course, for one night's stay it is not worth wasting your energy on what I suggest, but if you are going to live in the camp for some time, it is quite possible to make this life comfortable and easier. There are no fixed rules for this; you will change and improve something all the time, and this will give you great pleasure. But first, I’ll give you a few ideas.

PLACE TO STAY

You might want to take an air mattress with you on your hike. If you carefully read my advice in the first chapter, then you know that you need to put some kind of bedding under yourself to insulate your body from the ground. Air mattresses, however, quickly become damp - this problem can be solved by taking a bivouac bag with you, but problems arise when you sleep under a tarpaulin canopy. And even if the air layer retains moisture and keeps you from getting wet, a damp mattress is very uncomfortable - after you fold it for storage, it can become moldy, and it will be unpleasant to sleep on.

The solution is very simple - make yourself an improvised bed, which is not very difficult.

Find a pair of strong, thick logs, 1m long, and place them parallel to each other, about 15cm from the head and foot ends of your mattress. (In other words, if the length of the mattress is 2 m, the logs should lie at a distance of 2 m 30 cm.)

Now find some long straight branches about the thickness of your arm, place them on the logs and tie them tightly with a noose. You will have a platform raised above the ground. Use a knife to make indentations in the thick logs on which the branches rest so that they do not move out of place. By placing the mattress on this platform, you will sleep without contacting the ground.

Camp table

A camp table can be very convenient. It is the same platform, only raised higher. For one night, a stump with a flat surface is enough, but if you decide to camp for a longer period, make a larger and more reliable table.

If the ground is soft, dig two ditches opposite each other. Place the excavated soil along the edge of the ditches - it will serve as a backrest for the seat. The space between the ditches will become your table.

In Fig. 1–3, p. 80 shows how to build a wooden table with seats. Don't worry if the sticks you find in the forest aren't as straight and smooth as in the picture (they never are), but try to find sticks that are as straight and smooth as possible. Using an ax or saw, align them to length and make notches to join them together. Tie the sticks together using a tie or sled knot.

Chairs can be invaluable, especially if the ground in your camp is damp. With a little practice, you can make a chair in just 15 minutes. Do as shown in figure c. 81. The main thing is to find three strong branches that bifurcate at the ends and give them the shape shown in this picture. Having made the frame, cut the branches shorter and tie them with a tightening or sleigh knot.

CAMP LIGHTING

We are so used to turning on the light at the touch of a button that we can no longer imagine how dark it can be in the forest at night. This is especially true in the jungle, where immediately after sunset there is pitch darkness, since not a single light penetrates through the dense foliage. I found myself in a very unpleasant situation there several times, because I was used to the fact that there was twilight before dark. After all, setting up camp in the jungle in complete darkness is a very difficult task!

One day I stopped for the night in the mountains of Transylvania, where the largest population of brown bears in Europe remains. Just a few hours ago I came face to face with a huge bear, so I tried to make my camp as safe as possible. I stretched a wire around the hut, and tied a tin can with stones to the tree, connecting it to the wire - if someone touched it, the can would tip over. At night I thought I heard some sound, and I went out to see who was there. It was pitch black all around, and I didn’t have a flashlight. While checking the wire, I accidentally pulled it and almost jumped out of my skin when stones fell from above with an unimaginable roar! Sometimes our imagination plays bad tricks on us.

If you have lit a fire, it will illuminate your camp; and for directional light it is good to have a flashlight with you. He will become your indispensable assistant in unforeseen circumstances. I also advise you to take a few candles with you. Candles can easily fall off, so stick a knife into the wood with the flat side of the blade facing up. Place a few drops of melted paraffin on it and place a candle on the knife. (In the same way, place candles on a wet, flat surface, making sure there are no flammable objects nearby.)

SCOUT SECRETS OF BEAR GRYLLS

Do not throw away candle stubs or pieces of paraffin that have fallen from it. Melt them in a tin jar without a lid by inserting a piece of rope into the melted paraffin. Let the wax cool and you'll have another means of camp lighting (which could possibly save your life if you lose all other light sources).

What if there is a strong wind? I will teach you how to use a glass bottle as a windproof candle holder. To do this, you need to cut off the bottom of the bottle. Does this seem impossible to you? Fuck me bear! I swear that this can be done in the field without any special equipment, and without any risk of cutting yourself! All you need is a piece of thin wire, fire and cold water. Heat the wire until it is red hot. Just do this with gloves so as not to burn your fingers; after that, tie the bottle with wire in the place where you want to cut it. Dip the bottle into cold water, and it will crack exactly in the very place where you tied it with wire. Stick the candle into the ground or, after dripping paraffin, strengthen it on some other surface, and then cover it with a bottle on top. You will get a wonderful lantern that is not afraid of any wind!

WASH BASIN

If you went camping with a group and one of your tourists took a small basin with them, build a stand for it, and you will have a washbasin. Make a tripod out of three sticks, as shown in Fig. on right. At the intersection of the sticks, located 30 cm from the top, tie a tightening or sled knot. The lower part of the tripod forms the legs, and the upper part forms the support for your basin. (A more thorough washbasin that can be used for a long time is described in the chapter “Camping Life”, in the “Personal Hygiene” section.)

MARKING IMPROVISATIONS

If you don't have a basin, tie a piece of tarp to your tripod. You will have an improvised washbasin.

A case from one's life

There are many exciting stories about miracles of courage and endurance performed by Arctic and Antarctic explorers like Scott, Amundsen, and prisoners of war who escaped captivity into the jungle or mountains. These are outstanding examples of human perseverance and determination. But you don't have to go to Antarctica to find yourself in a situation that puts your life at risk. This trouble may be waiting for you on the doorstep. By being able to think logically and having knowledge - such as how to tie knots or use different materials to build shelters, make gear and start a fire - you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

One of my friends was undergoing testing for service in the special forces. Having successfully completed several stages, he was subjected to a new test, which was called “Struggle for Survival, Separation from Pursuit, Resistance and Extraction.” This test took place not in the Arctic desert or in the jungles of Borneo, but among the hills and valleys of North Wales!

My friend fled, and he was pursued by a detachment of hunters, whose task was to find him and capture him. Soon he found himself in a dense pine forest. He knew well that hunters with dogs were following his trail. Making his way through the dense forest, he was unable to correctly assess the situation and choose the right direction. Finally, he escaped from the dense thickets and fell straight into the pond! He got out of it, but it was October, and the water was so cold that he almost suffocated.

The previous four evenings the temperature had dropped below zero, and the wind was strong. My friend realized that this was a matter of his life and death. He could not light a fire - this would give away his location to his pursuers. The only thing left for him was to build a shelter from the icy wind and try to somehow warm up.

Due to the dense canopy of trees, there was almost no undergrowth on the ground. He began digging the ground to determine the thickness of the spruce litter. It was approximately 45 cm, which means that it would not be possible to dig a hole that would hide it entirely. He needed to build a ground shelter, but he had neither ropes nor building materials.

But, digging the ground, he got to the spruce roots, and these roots are one of the best natural materials for tying knots. If split, they are ideal for holding together the structure of a temporary shelter. And my friend began to pull out spruce roots from the ground. He split them, and then picked up dry branches that were lying nearby. It didn't take long before his low hut was ready. All he had to do was pile spruce needles and branches on the side of the hut from where the wind was blowing, and his shelter would be ready. And he realized that, despite the cold and darkness, strong wind and wet clothes, he would be able to escape.

Necessity, as the old saying goes, is the mother of invention. In other words, if you really need something, with a little thought, you can figure out how to solve this problem, even if you have to use improvised materials and tools. In camping conditions, you don’t need multi-meter nylon ropes and tarpaulins - with common sense, you can not only survive, but also get comfortable.

Of course, the chances of finding yourself in a life-or-death situation are slim, but in the field there are always moments when you need to use your wits. And then you will understand that nature is a store, a warehouse of materials, and a shed with tools. All you need is to be able to observe, think, laugh and never give up! All scouts do this.

Children are always interested in the successes of their squad, the results of sports and creative events, they love to read witty advice from counselors, compare scores for cleanliness in their room (cleanliness screen), know who is from the squad and what they managed to excel at over the past day, etc. d. Therefore, the place where all information is concentrated should be the ship’s logbook and a general information stand. The ship's log reflects the ship's activities and its participation in the life of the children's planet. The ship's magazine is designed to develop children's activity, expand knowledge, and help in education good taste, teach the culture of design, awaken interest in the life of your team. The ship's log is where the ship's crew constantly works. The successes and victories of the ship are presented here, the imagination, ingenuity, and skill of the children are reflected. This is a kind of newspaper, and it is constantly operating, lively, and creative.

The ship's log is the creativity of you and your children, but nevertheless we want to give some tips that will help you:

The journal should reflect various aspects of the life of the ship (sports, participation in camp life, awards, birthdays);

Children should take part in decorating the corner and updating the content of the headings.

The design of the magazine (corner) should correspond to the name of the ship (and the age of the children, of course). The ship's log can be placed on one sheet of whatman paper, but if possible, it can occupy the entire wall in the hall, or you can even decorate the entire hall in accordance with the name of the ship. The most important thing is that the magazine should largely be made by children (of course, if the children are very small, you can limit yourself to only minor elements on their part). The counselor should take mainly a leading and directing part.

As a rule, in the first days, only the base of the corner is made, containing the necessary elements, and it is filled during the entire shift. Before leaving, the children take the corner apart piece by piece as a souvenir, so if the corner is large, then everyone will get a memorable piece, and there will be no fights.

For the arrival of new children, the following sections are drawn up in the corner:

Congratulations on your arrival - welcome posters (“Hello, we are glad to see you!”, “We have been waiting for you for a long time!”, “Hurray! You have arrived!”, etc.);

Information about the camp, counselors, camp address;

Laws and traditions of the camp (see below);

Instructions for the guys from the last shift (if this is the first shift - from last summer);

Daily reflection;

Daily plan, shift plan and other sections at the discretion of the counselors.

Squad corner

During the main shift period, the detachment corner reflects the daily activities of the detachment:

Competitions;

Preparing for the holidays;

Participation in creative competitions;

Encouraging children, etc.

The name of the unit, motto, emblem and anthem of the unit;

Shift calendar;

Daily routine (you can come up with a poetic one);

Sports news;

Squad list;

Clean screen;

Book of complaints and suggestions;

Revelation Fence (where children can write whatever they want);

Funny phrases: after the “Hang up” command it becomes dark; If you chase two counselors, you won’t catch either one, etc.

You can enter a changeable heading “Congratulations”. You can congratulate the guys not only on their birthday or on winning a competition, but:

To all of us that we woke up today;

Everyone, everyone, everyone have a good week at camp;

With the first rain in the camp;

Happy opening of the swimming season to all of us;

All the girls who were invited to a slow dance, all the boys who decided to invite these same girls to a slow dance, all the other boys and girls who did not dance a slow dance, but only watched, watched, watched...

You can make an interesting section “Time”. This section is placed next to the daily routine, the guys and counselors figure out what time it is:

Clean rooms;

On duty in the dining room;

Collect lost things;

Seize the moment;

Check watches, etc.

In addition to the obligatory filling, you can hang absolutely everything related to the squad in the corner (for example: drawings after a caricature competition, gratitude, angry sheets, a treasure map after searching for treasure). Design options can be very different, and they are limited only by your imagination: flat, three-dimensional, sliding, with rotating parts or hanging elements, and you can use anything as a material, not just paper.

Design secrets

First of all, take this advice: when packing your bags for camp, be sure to take some office supplies with you - they are never superfluous! You can also take something that can help you with the design - these are color magazines, postcards, catalogs that you are going to throw away, believe me, they will come in handy in the camp. You can read how they can be used here. Another very important point in design - NEVER THROW AWAY FROM COLORED PAPER (you will need them later)!

Registration of numbers for rooms

It is very convenient when colorful numbers hang on children's rooms indicating the squad number and the names of the children who live there.

1. This can be done in this form (a boat is glued together from colored paper): the room number is written on the flag of the boat, the squad number is written on the hull, and the names of the children are written on the sail. In order to make it easier to remember the names of all children at the beginning of the shift, names can be entered in the same way as the beds and room. Thus, when entering a room, the counselor will see in front of him a small plan of the room with all its inhabitants.

2. Take out the color magazines you brought with you. There will definitely be photographs of boys and girls. If you cut them out and paste them onto a sheet of colored paper according to the number of girls or boys living in the room, then each child can choose a “photo of themselves” and sign their name next to it.

3. For the little ones, you can glue daisies - for girls with a red center, and for boys - with a blue one. The number of Petals can correspond to the number of children living in the room, in order to sign a name on each petal.

Decor business cards for children

At the beginning of the shift, it is difficult for children and counselors to remember each other's names. The counselors have badges indicating their names, so the children also need to make business cards.

1. You can draw any cartoon and enter everything you need:

2. You can glue the faces of boys and girls from colored paper:

Laws and traditions for the detachment corner

Counselors should focus children’s attention on three “don’ts”: you can’t disrupt the daily routine, you can’t leave the camp territory without permission, you can’t offend anyone. But along with this, each unit must have its own laws and traditions. There are laws and traditions that apply throughout the camp.

Some of them:

. Law of law- this is the rule of strict compliance with all laws that apply in the camp. Remember: laws exist to be followed.

. Law 00- this is the law of accuracy. Camp life is a series of events. If you yourself are accurate and punctual, then your squad will be the same. Late arrivals and unnecessary pauses are what make camp life uninteresting and lead to conflicts among children and adults.

. Law of territory- this is a very strict law. Neither the children nor you are allowed to leave the camp territory without permission from the administration. Violation of the law threatens the life and health of the child.

. Law of Water- these are the rules for the safe behavior of children on the beach and while swimming. Often on the beach or in the pool they forget about everything. But you, the counselor, must remember and follow all the rules, all the requirements for the safe interaction of children with water.

. Law of Greenery- this is the law of caring for nature, the flora and fauna that surrounds us. It is also important to consider that many plants, insects and animals can pose a threat to the life and health of children and adults (poisonous mushrooms, berries, insects, snakes, etc.). The law of the forest says: “Be careful and attentive in the forest!”

. The Law of Creativity. For a long time in camps and children's groups there was a great rule: “Do everything creatively, otherwise why?!” Creativity cannot be limited. Invent, create and fantasize, without this there is no children's camp, there is no counselor work.

. Law of the Raised Hand. Discussions often take place in the camp - they discuss how life is going, which things worked out, which didn’t, and why. If you want to express your opinion or judgment, agreement or disagreement, raise your hand. The law says: if a person raises his hand, he needs to tell people something necessary. When a hand is raised, everyone around should shut up and listen carefully. But you have the right to raise your hand when you want to say something important.

. Law of the Eagle Circle. The circle brings the guys together. It’s great when your friends are nearby, to feel a friend’s elbow, a faithful hand, a kind look. In the circle of eaglets, with their hands on the shoulders of their comrades, the guys sing their favorite songs. There is a rule - we place our right hand on the shoulder of the neighbor on the right, and the left hand on the waist of the neighbor on the left. The Eagle Circle is a symbol of frank, spiritual comfort.

. Tradition of treating people kindly- This is a tradition of goodwill and respect for each other. Smile, rejoice, wish everyone who lives next to you health and goodness. Support and help each other out, and then all things will work out faster and better.

. Tradition of a good attitude towards the song. The sages said that song is the soul of the people. Every camp, every unit has its own favorite songs. Appreciate the song, love the song, treat it like your most precious relic. Do not disturb those who are singing, do not sing if you do not know the melody and words of the song. A song, like people, requires respect.

. The tradition of the evening light. Every day there is an evening light at the camp. From the very first light, the principle is accepted - sincerity, goodwill, truth in the eyes. Light is a frank assessment of the deeds and actions of one’s comrades. On the fire they dream, argue, sing their favorite songs. These are lessons about integrity, genuine love for people and lifelong friendships.

You can create other laws and traditions of your life in the camp yourself, together with your guys.

Show creativity, establish your laws and traditions!

Laws and traditions can be formalized in poetic form on a common “scroll”:

Fonts for camp design

Design of a squad newspaper

The design and content of wall newspapers should always correspond to the theme of the newspaper. Children make a newspaper in a small group, so it is necessary that all children do something. There is not very much time to make a newspaper, therefore it is very important to properly organize the work of each child and the micro-group as a whole. In a newspaper, not only the information itself is important, but also its appearance. It needs to be bright and attract attention. To attract attention, you can use an unusual newspaper shape, since ordinary rectangular sheets do not always attract the attention of viewers. For example, if the content of a newspaper summarizes the results of the game "Treasure Island", 10 it can be cut out in this form (see figure).

To create a pop of color in your newspaper, you can use appliqué - it's a very quick and colorful shape that can be used in camp decorations. It is especially good to use appliqué in junior units, as they spend a very long time drawing, and this will save time on making a newspaper. Not only colored paper can be used here, but also magazine clippings from the cut out letters of the headlines, you can add up the necessary words for the newspaper, and images can also come in handy.

Making awards for children

During the shift, you will conduct squad activities, competitions, games, and based on their results it is necessary to carry out awards; for this you can make medals, certificates or thanks.

Medals

Medals should always be bright, always indicating the nomination or place. Try to move away from the usual round shape and come up with an interesting, unusual shape. For example, a medal for the cleanest room might look like this (see figure)

Certificates and gratitude

Certificates and commendations are presented to one child or a small group, so in addition to stating the reason for the award, it is important to list the winners by name. The usual form of a letter is an A4 sheet, but try to come up with a new form. For example, a gratitude message may look like an ancient scroll (see picture).

And to create an applique on the letter, you can use the remaining scraps of colored paper.

Club advertising

To attract the attention of children to the sections, workshops and studios organized on the camp territory, it is recommended to use bright advertisements.

First, let's define the terminology used. In tourist and expeditionary practice, a halt is understood as a short stop for rest, clarification of orientation, provision of assistance, and the like. This is not organizing a full-fledged camp.

The time and frequency of organizing stops depend on the complexity of the route, the condition of the group, and the degree of urgency of the tasks assigned to the group. Tourist groups usually practice stopping for 5-10 minutes after 30-50 minutes of travel. This is the so-called small halt. A long lunch break lasts up to 2-3 hours.

The place where the group is located during a halt is called a bivouac. And finally, we will call a camp a stationary parking lot that involves a long period of stay at it. The choice of place for setting up a camp is carried out by the group leader, taking into account the basic requirements for the field site, the tasks of the group, and the nature of the proposed work.

Basic requirements for the place of camping and long-term camping.

Basic requirements can be divided into two main groups - security and convenience requirements. If you are not expected to stay at the chosen location for a long period of time, then the requirements of convenience can, in principle, be considered of secondary importance. As the life of the camp increases, the importance of their implementation increases significantly. Moreover, some of the external factors that determine these requirements, with increasing duration of action, begin to influence safety, and quite significantly.

Of course, you can stop to catch your breath on a piece of terrain with any terrain, as long as it is possible to stay there. But the place chosen for an overnight stay, especially for a camp, should be as level as possible. Agree, it is uncomfortable to sleep in a tent, constantly sliding towards the center or towards the edge. Perhaps someone will find pleasure in this, especially considering that girls, as a rule, sleep in the center. Just remember, they can misunderstand, and then the situation will arise when the question of your convenience turns into a question of your safety.

The camping and parking area must be dry. Especially if your group's equipment kit doesn't include large quantities Huggies diapers to combat dampness in tents. Well, seriously speaking, I have not yet met a single person who would express his delight at rheumatism acquired in this way. So it’s better to take care of your health and the possibility of participating in new trips and expeditions in advance.

One of the most important and pressing requirements is the absence of objects around the parking lot or camp that have a tendency to fall or may manifest it under the influence of natural factors such as wind, rain, snow, earthquakes, tsunamis and other things. In the tundra and desert, except for military aircraft, there is not much to fall. But in our latitudes, be extremely attentive to leaning trees and broken hanging branches.

Of particular danger are broken trees that have not fallen, but are leaning against neighboring ones; no one knows when and with what gust of wind their balance will be disrupted. Therefore, if you absolutely need to stand in this particular place and other options are not suitable for some reason, it is better to bring down such structures in advance. The chosen location should provide protection from wind and midges. Here, however, it is not without interest to note that it will be very difficult to fulfill BOTH of these requirements at the same time, since it is the airiness of the area that is guaranteed to free it from blood-sucking creatures.

A windswept camp set up in an open field can forget about insects. But, when hiding from atmospheric currents in the forest, prepare repellent. At higher elevations, the lack of annoying ringing above the ear will be more than compensated by the flapping of the tent awning under powerful gusts of wind. In a ravine or lowland, you may not even feel a slight breeze, but it is in such places that stagnant puddles and swamps usually form, a favorite habitat for mosquitoes. In a word, here, as in many other choice situations encountered in life, you will have to look for a middle ground. Don't despair, you are not the first and you are not the last.

The main external resources consumed by the camp are firewood. And if the presence of water, as a rule, can be assessed briefly and simply it is either there or it is not, then the more firewood there should be, the more large number the camp is expected and the longer the period it should function. From the point of view of water availability (and other things), parking on the banks of a river or lake would be ideal. And if such an opportunity exists, then among other options they prefer to use it. But a search engine differs from a tourist in that it is not he who chooses the area, but it who chooses him.

Therefore, if you have to work in an area remote from large bodies of water, then at the reconnaissance stage you should determine how to provide the camp with water. In this case, the choice remains not particularly rich, you will have to rely only on streams, springs and wells. I don’t recommend collecting water from random puddles; you can, like the hero of a famous fairy tale, become a little goat. As one of my friends said, there is never too much firewood. Moreover, they will be needed not only as fuel, but also as a building material.

Therefore, it is best if there are several large dead trees, preferably conifers, in the vicinity of the camp. By the way, no matter how paradoxical it may seem at first glance, harvesting firewood from large trees is much easier than from small ones. Once fallen, the sushi is then sawed and split over several days as needed. This produces compact and, most importantly, dry logs. You have to collect small change throughout the surrounding forest, then drag an armful of branches through the undergrowth to the camp, and if it also rained before, then perhaps dry it.

You should not stop close to cliffs or other terrain elements from which you can fall. The danger of an avalanche, landslide or rockfall is typical in mountainous areas. Therefore, the signs of determining its probability are not considered here; quite a lot has been written about this in the literature on mountaineering and survival. But it is necessary to take into account the possibility of flooding the camp by a river overflowing due to heavy rains even in our latitudes. By the way, it is for this reason that it is not recommended to stand on small, low river islands.

And, of course, you should always take into account the possibility of thunderstorms, especially in the mountains. I think everyone understands that a camp set up in an open field will be open not only to all winds, but also to all lightning. Therefore, if your plans do not include repeating the experiments of Lomonosov and Richman, which ended tragically for the latter, then it is better to look for a campsite in the forest. I emphasize IN THE FOREST, and not near a few lonely trees! Otherwise the effect will be the opposite!

We should not forget about the anthropogenic factor, that is, caused by human activity. It is hardly wise to set up camp directly near the village. Unfortunately, indescribable boredom is growing in rural areas now, and there is a good chance that local youth will come to you to have fun. If night finds you on the route near a village, and it is not possible to continue moving for a long time, then you should stop for the night BEFORE you pass the village, and not AFTER you have already been seen in it.

In this case, naturally, a light and sound masking mode is introduced; you should not be visible from the outside settlement, and, of course, you will have to refrain from loud songs and conversations. You should be even more wary of standing, much less walking near military units. Firstly, soldiers are often bored now and want to have fun. Secondly, remember that the sentry guarding the secret facility (despite the general collapse, in some places there are still such things) really wants to “prevent an attack on him” and go on vacation for this. Draw your own conclusions.

It is also not worth setting up a parking lot, especially a long-term camp near high-voltage lines, gas and oil pipelines, livestock farms, wastewater treatment plants, drilling rigs, busy highways, airfields, missile launch complexes, nuclear power plants... This list is not exhaustive, so think with your head in each specific case. When setting up for the night, it is advisable to use old mooring sites.

For the first time I spent the night in a tent... I don’t remember when it was... A long time ago... I was very little... Since then, I only remember my father’s huge tent, fashionable, Polish, bright green and orange. The pride of the parent and the envy of the neighbors - savages. It stood like a fairy-tale palace among the gray-green tent world.

That tent has been to many places: in the Caucasus and the Baltic states, in the Crimea and Transcarpathia, in the Belarusian forests and among the fields of Ukraine. When I turned twenty, I took out a miracle - a tent from the attic and decided to use it for its intended purpose. Alas, the first rain showed that nothing lasts forever and the decayed canvas palace went to the dustbin of history.

And I began to build my camp for my fishing tasks. And this is what I finally built.

Departure to departure discord

Departures are usually divided into short and long. Although this is not entirely true. A couple or three men who are crazy about fishing will live well for a couple of weeks in the most spartan conditions. And if women, children and other people are leaving, unaccustomed to hardships and adversities, then they have to stay in maximum comfort for three days.

On short (or “wild”) trips there is no time, and there is no desire, to waste precious time setting up a large camp. If you have somewhere to throw your tired body at night and something to put in your hungry belly, that’s good! On long (or “comfortable”) trips, the camp is set up thoroughly, with all possible amenities and wisdom. It is highly desirable that the equipment for both types of trips overlap as much as possible - it’s cheaper and more convenient. But, alas, it doesn’t always work out.

Let's start with the tent

Everywhere and always the author uses these small tents with a small vestibule (photo 3). I have organized as many as three of them! When I travel alone, I take “my” tent. If with a family, I add a second one for the wife and a third one for the children.

Such tents take up little space and can be installed, with some skill, in 10 minutes. But everyone has their own separate apartment. No one snores, no one breathes evening alcohol in their face, no one farts in their sleep. The tents are for two people, but they are more spacious for one person, especially for larger people. In addition, there is space for clothes and all sorts of small items. The small vestibule is convenient for storing shoes and protects the entrance from rain.

I personally consider a large “family” tent to be overkill (although I understand that not everyone shares my point of view). Of course, you can put a mountain of things in it, put a table and even cook food. But we do things differently: if we go in a crowd or for a long time, we take a tent. It provides you with a kitchen and a dining room and a living room and cabins - company and shelter from rain and wind. A tent needs to have a strong metal frame and double walls. In hot weather - mesh. In cold or rain, the mesh is covered with fabric. For a short trip of one or two people, a small compact tent is suitable. It will protect from the rain and cover from the sun.

The main item of interior design is a tourist kitchen table. A very convenient thing! There are different sizes, for long trips a large kitchen one is more convenient (photo 6), for a short trip - a simple tourist one (photo 7). I prefer to sit on a simple folding chair (yes, I know about armchairs too). I choose stronger and taller. And always with bracket legs (as in the photo). This one does not sink in the viscous soil under the rider. I never became comfortable with folding chairs (either because of my height of 195 cm, or because of my weight of 140 kg). They seem bulky and not very reliable to me. Those that cost real money do not hold much weight and quickly break down, while the expensive ones are worth the price of a polished set.

For long gatherings of a large group, folding tables and tables are not very suitable - the design is painfully shaky. In such cases, we use a folding table (or tables) as utility tables, and a normal dining table is made of wood. So are the shops. Finding several boards is not a problem if you take care of it ahead of time.

We cook food on gas. A fire is very romantic, but vain and dirty. Therefore, the fire is left for the soul or for the smokehouse. In the tent, under the kitchen table on the “long” trips, there is an ordinary household gas cylinder for a two-burner stove.

For short trips I use approximately the same cylinders with different attachments - both for “cooking” and for “shine”.

Here you have both gas and electricity. Although for very short trips today, it is probably more profitable to use “long” cylinders and equipment for them. They are cheaper, are on sale everywhere and there is different equipment for them, too, “a wagon and a small cart.”

Light is a big topic!

We used ordinary flashlights, then fluorescent ones appeared, and tried gas, kerosene and gasoline lamps. Then LED lights came - the most “long-lasting” ones... And then one of our friends bought a compact generator, and life changed.

Phones and other tablets are always charged, there is plenty of light. Convenient thing!

“Personal” light is provided by cheap headbands (photo 16), placed in all corners: in a tent, in a car, in a kitchen, in a box with fishing lures. An electric bat-type flashlight is convenient for night fishing (photo 17). I also carry a powerful “spotlight” with me, but I hardly use it (photo 18).

About dishes

Let the special compact and lightweight sets of pots and bowls remain for backpackers. For serious trips, I prefer spacious, reliable boilers or even... old pots from home. I also prefer large frying pans with a non-stick coating. We live comfortably and don’t eat concentrates.

Everyone chooses personal dishes according to their taste. I use vintage stainless steel bowls, spoons and forks. But I don’t like metal mugs - they remind me of the army. I drink from a completely homemade mug made from “unbreakable” glass.

Another thing is short trips. A small pot with a lid - a bowl, inside which fit: a mug, a spoon, matches and a tin of tea, sugar and salt. Mixing up something “instant” and drinking some tea is quite enough.

I forgot one more important point...

After trying different types of bedding, I settled on a self-inflating mat (photo 19). I prefer a regular sleeping bag, like a “blanket” (photo 20).

You need to - zip it up and get a bag. If you need it, you unbutton it and there you have the blanket. By the way, I have two sleeping bags: a simple, lightweight one for warm weather and a seriously insulated one, in which you can sleep comfortably even in frosty conditions.

That seems to be all the basic equipment. There is one small thing left that should not be forgotten either. No toy shovels or tourist hatchets. A real shovel with a short handle and a heavy splitting axe.

I prefer the cheapest, prefabricated barbecue.

If anything, it’s not a pity to lose him. I won’t give advice about the smokehouse. In this sacrament, everyone has their own secrets. In the "household" kit: nails, rope, electrical tape, several clothespins, a piece of thick polyethylene, a stopper - a washbasin for a five-liter plastic bottle. And, of course, strong and capacious garbage bags.

Everything stated above is a personal opinion based on the personal experience of the author. No brands or models of equipment are given as a matter of principle. The photos show the type of equipment, brands and models are also randomly selected.

And in general, you can listen to advice, but you don’t have to rush to implement it. There is a lot of different equipment on the market, good and... not so good. Everyone will be able to equip the camp according to their own understanding and capabilities.
