Ski complex Lisya Gora. Secrets of the Fox Mountain

One of the symbols of the city of Nizhny Tagil (Sverdlovsk region) is Fox Mountain, on which the tower stands. It is located in historical center and is the centerpiece of the city. All year round it offers excellent views of the city and the surrounding area. Its history is interesting, a lot happened here in different periods of time.

Why wasn't it dug up like the neighboring High Mountain? This is because Lisya Gora consists of igneous rocks - augite and diabase-porphyrites. These are trifling minerals, so they are of no value.

However, the location is excellent. When the Tagil River was blocked and a pond formed, this mountain became the dominant feature of the factory settlement. At the foot of the pond, a wonderful view opens up from the top. In addition, almost from the first years of the founding of the factory settlement at the foot of the mountain, a torzhok was located, which occupied quite a decent area in size. Since the entire village was visible from the mountain, there was a watch on it to monitor fires and nomads. Initially, there was a wooden hut on the mountain.

Everything changed at the beginning of the 19th century. It was at this time that a stone tower appeared on the mountain. It is believed that the date of its construction is 1818, as indicated by the inscription on the cast-iron plate in the plinth lining. But is it? There is a version that Nikolai Nikitich Demidov, who at that time was the owner of the Tagil factories and a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812, wanted to erect a chapel in honor of the victory of the Russian people over Napoleon. But this cannot be, because at that time a new round of the struggle of the church against schismatics began, the staff of clergy was reduced and, of course, small chapels were liquidated. The church could not allow the construction of a chapel, much less consecrate it.

The most plausible version of the installation of the tower on the mountain is connected with one love story. This is the love story of Nikolai Nikitich Demidov and Baroness Elizaveta Alexandrovna Stroganova. Elizaveta Stroganova married in December 1793 Nikolai Nikitich Demidov, a wealthy industrialist. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, family life was not smooth. She liked social life and wanted to be in the spotlight, attracted everything French (gallomania). He is a major industrialist, strict at home, a philanthropist. However, their marriage was not as arranged as it seemed from the outside. This is confirmed by the correspondence of the married couple.

Nikolai Nikitich Demidov and Elizaveta Alexandrovna Stroganova

In one of her letters to her husband (1815-1817), the baroness recalled the initial, happy period of their life together, when they visited the palace of Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris.

In a letter, Elizabeth recalls how they admired the sunset together. “... climbing the spiral staircase to the rotunda on the dome", and invites "Nicolas" to repeat this " adventure". Similar memories in the letters of Elizabeth Alexandrovna were one of her favorite topics, and there is nothing unusual here. But here is a curious coincidence: in the turret on Lisya Gora there is a spiral staircase, a rotunda, and a place from where you can admire the sunset.

March 27, 1818 Elizaveta Alexandrovna Stroganova-Demidova suddenly dies. Despite the "unsmooth family life" and the gap before the death of Elizabeth, the spouses maintained a good relationship. Architecturally, the Lisyegorsk Tower is very similar to the crowning rotunda of the Vaux-le-Vicomte palace. It is on this memory that the assumption of the construction of the Lisyegorsk Tower in memory of the deceased Elizabeth Stroganova-Demidova and the happy days for the Demidov couple is based.

The Palace of Vaux-le-Vicomte is also known for the fact that a man in an iron mask was kept here, and it was Nicolas Fouquet, for whom this palace was built. This mask, in fact, was not iron, but velvet, and under it they hid a face known to all of France. In addition, the well-known American version of the film about the man in the iron mask with Leonardo DiCaprio in leading role We also filmed in this castle. In the film, Vaux-le-Vicomte was the royal palace, and all exterior scenes take place against the backdrop of steps or in a park.

Initially, the tower on Lisya Gora had four entrances, four porticoes and columns. At least, this is how the architects captured it in the drawings of 1828. But since 1851, it has only one entrance and, accordingly, one portico (canopy over the porch). It was in this form that the tower on Lisya Gora stood for most of its history and looks like this now.

The tower was also used as an observatory. Allegedly, at the beginning of the 19th century, Demidov became interested in astronomy and ordered his managers to equip him with a place for observing celestial bodies. There is little evidence for this, however. One of them is the mention of the presence of an observatory in 1837. Then the 19-year-old heir to the throne, the son of Nicholas I, traveled around Russia with his retinue. The current emperor sent the heir to get acquainted with the country that he was to rule. The 19-year-old boy was then not so interested in the industry, but the people of Tagil found how to surprise the heir - with illumination.

Alexander Nikolaevich's companions were the tutor of the Tsarevich, the famous poet Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky, who mourned the death of his friend Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin three months ago, and adjutant Colonel Semyon Yuryevich. And if the great poet very dryly described the trip to Nizhny Tagil, then S.A. Yuryevich wrote letters-reports to his wife from the route in great detail. He wrote that he saw the future Emperor Alexander II on Fox Mountain:

“A high mountain with an observatory, all in the bright fire of countless bowls, struck our eyes, already accustomed to the brilliance of this kind; all this was reflected in the waters of a large reservoir of mountain waters, and an illuminated small boat in the middle of these waters with a choir of musicians and singers who played the Russian anthem of Lvov, which had not reached our ears for a long time, completed our charm. The Grand Duke admired one with real pleasure and listened to another. This music was delightful to him ... ".

Once it was reported that there was an observatory on Fox Mountain, then it really happened. Obviously, Yuryevich asked what kind of tower it was, and received an answer that it was an observatory and a weather station. In addition, Pavel Nikolaevich Demidov continued all the affairs of his father, and it is logical to assume that the tower on Lisya Gora was built not as a guard tower, but for memory and observation (for stars and celestial bodies) ... Confirmation of this was found in the storerooms of the central city library of Nizhny Novgorod Tagil: telescopes, a compass and a thermometer of the 18th-19th centuries were found. In addition, from August 1835 to April 1836, Halley's comet could be seen from the Earth. And this could be one of the goals for the construction of the observatory. There is also information that the exiled Polish revolutionary Adolf Yanushkevich, the librarian of the first public Tagil library, who lived in Nizhny Tagil in 1853-1856, was also engaged in meteorological observations at the Tagil observatory.

Located on the highest point of the terrain, the Lisyegorskaya Tower was rebuilt in the 1850s after a series of large fires in the Nizhny Tagil and Vyisky factory settlements and began to be used as a fire tower. She performed these functions with the help of a special system of signals - throwing out lanterns and sounding the alarm bell. The tower again became a sentinel ... It ceased to carry out this service with the appearance of a fire tower on Aleksandrovskaya Street at the beginning of the 20th century.

In Soviet times, the tower performed various functions. During the Civil War, it served as an observation post. In the 1930s, it was chosen by meteorologists, and in 1956 a television repeater was installed on it. In the summer of 1972, Yaropolk Lapshin filmed a film in the Urals based on Dmitry Mamin-Sibiryak's novel Privalov's Millions. Part of the filming took place in Yekaterinburg, and part - in Nizhny Tagil. Several episodes were filmed just on Lisya Gora.

Now Lisya Gora and the tower on it are just a symbol of the city and a place of mass celebrations, a picturesque panorama of the city opens from here. For a long time she stood in desolation. I happened to visit Lisya Gora in 2013 and the tower was in a sad state.

The situation improved in 2015 thanks to the mayor S.K. Nosov. Already in the spring of 2015, the tower was surrounded by scaffolding. On the slope of the mountain, a staircase of stone slabs was built, and the area around was ennobled. On August 6, 2015, at an altitude of 265 meters above sea level, the smallest museum in the country was opened in Nizhny Tagil. The renovated tower on Lisya Gora, together with a tiny exposition inside, has become a new branch of the Gornozavodskoy Ural Museum-Reserve. The area of the museum inside is only about 13 m 2 , in three corners there is a rack with exhibits about the history of the tower, in the fourth there is a cast-iron spiral staircase. Unfortunately, due to security reasons, it is not possible to climb the stairs to the second floor of the tower.
