Boeing 757-200 is a twin-engine, narrow-body, passenger aircraft manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, intended for operation on medium-haul routes. Boeing 757, was created as a replacement for the three-engine narrow-body airliner Boeing 727.

Compared to its predecessor, the Boeing 757, has become more fuel efficient. The consumption of which was reduced by almost 20 percent, thanks to improved aerodynamics and the use of new engines.

Work on the Boeing 757 officially began in August 1978. The basic version in this project was the Boeing 757-200 aircraft, designed to accommodate 189 passenger seats.

After testing was completed, on December 21, 1982, the Boeing 757-200 aircraft received an American FAA certificate of airworthiness. A month later, in January 1982, the aircraft was certified in the UK. In 1983, the first Boeing 757-200 was delivered to Eastern Air Lines.

The first flight of the Boeing 757-200, equipped with American Pratt & Whitney PW2037s engines, with a thrust of 162.8 kN, was made on March 14, 1984. And at the end of October of the same year, he passed certification.

The airliner uses the EFIS digital avionics system developed by Rockwell Collins. Six multifunction displays are used to display all the necessary flight information. This avionics complex is unified with the avionics used on the Boeing 767 wide-body aircraft, which was developed in parallel with the Boeing 757.

The passenger cabin of the aircraft, in a two-class configuration, economy plus business, can accommodate 201 passenger seats. In a single-class, economy configuration, the Boeing 757-200 can carry 228 passengers.

In addition to the commercial passenger version, a cargo aircraft was also developed, which was designated Boeing 757-200PF. This aircraft is designed to carry up to 40 tons of payload. These are fairly common flying machines. According to the universal scheme, the aircraft cabin is divided into three parts: economic, business and first. According to the creators' plans, it is also possible to operate the device using only two classes: economy and business. But due to this, the Boeing 757-200 can only accommodate 180 people.

In each row of the cabin there are six seats, which are arranged in threes, to the left and right of the central aisle. It is worth noting that this is very convenient for passengers. The cabin is wide enough to allow passengers to sit incredibly comfortably in their seats, and it is divided into 40 rows.

In front of the first of them there are toilets, so these places can hardly be called comfortable, but their advantage is the ability to comfortably position your legs. The second row is also hampered by the sanitary room, since its wall is almost adjacent to it. For those who have back problems, you should not buy tickets for seats in the 10th row, since the backrests there do not recline due to the fact that there is an emergency exit behind them. The most comfortable, according to reviews from knowledgeable people, is row No. 32, since the seats recline there, you can comfortably place your legs, there are no toilets nearby, in general, these are really the most pleasant and best places throughout the salon.

Among the uncomfortable places, the following rows can be noted:

  • No. 12 - according to some passengers, it is always very cold there;
  • No. 15 - usually there is no window near these places, but you really want to look at the clouds and the ground during the flight;
  • No. 30 and No. 40 - the seats in this row do not recline back, in addition, there is a toilet behind it (behind row No. 40 there is a technical room), which definitely creates various inconveniences.

It is difficult to determine exactly which seats on the plane can be called the best. Some believe that this is determined by safety or proximity to an emergency exit (although this is unlikely to save in the event of an accident). Others argue that the main thing is comfortable and convenient seats, so that you can, for example, stretch your legs, tilt the backrest, without disturbing your neighbors behind. For still others, it is important to have sanitary facilities nearby, while for others, unpleasant odors bother them.

If we talk about safety, here the points of view of experts coincide: you need to sit closer to the tail section. Of course, all the arguments that, sitting in one place or another, a person has a greater chance of surviving in the event of any problems, are unlikely to have any basis. But the Russian proverb comes into play: “God protects those who are careful.”

The largest airline in Russia specializing in charter flights, Azur Air, has 19 Boeing aircraft in its fleet. Among other models, these are eight copies of the Boeing 757 model. namely modifications 757-200. (in common parlance - “two hundredth”). Competitors (for example, another charter airline, Royal Flight) also prefer this model. It is distinguished by an increased fuselage length and, accordingly, a greater number of passenger seats than the basic version.

These aircraft are used on leasing terms. Before this, the aircraft operated in various airlines around the world, but the last (before Azur Air) operator was the same for all - the Utair-Russia company, which completely abandoned this type of aircraft.

Rows 1-10, the total number of seats is 60. It is considered the most comfortable among the three.

Note! If the partition does not interfere, you can choose. It’s just better to stock up on gadgets or a book to somehow entertain yourself during the flight.

Row 10. The seat backs are locked in one position, close to vertical, and not very comfortable. They cannot be folded back in any way for safety reasons, so as not to reduce the space for emergency exits. Sitting in this position for many hours and sleeping is another task that is sometimes impossible for many. Objectively not the most comfortable places.

Rows 11-30. The total number of seats is 114. This part of the fuselage of the Azur Air Boeing 757 200 is located above the wings, so there will be noticeably less shaking when entering a turbulence zone. Row 12. There are no 12th row seats in front of seats A and F (at the windows) of the Boeing 757 200 of Azur Air due to the emergency exit doors. Here you can stretch out very comfortably, but only for those who have paid the appropriate fee, since these places are marked in red on the diagram, which means they are part of the Azur Space group.

Row 30. All of it is undesirable for registration for two reasons. The seat backs cannot be reclined - such a mechanism is not provided. And this was done because exactly behind the seats there are two toilets at once. Thus, the doors will slam constantly, not the most pleasant smells will certainly come out of the restrooms, and you shouldn’t forget about the sounds. Row 31. Thanks to emergency exits, it has increased comfort. The restrictions imposed on passengers are the same as for row No. 11.

Row 40. Many modern airliners have bathrooms behind it. This is not the case with the Boeing 757 200 Azur. But the backrests of the seats are still blocked, because there is a galley at the back. Accordingly, there will still be noise and smells, but they will be different. In addition, stewards may interfere with the in-flight catering trolley, which takes up the entire aisle. But there are also advantages. First of all, it is close to the exit door. It is very convenient to leave the plane upon arrival from row No. 40.

Note! Aerophobes should know the fact that, according to statistics, the majority of survivors of plane crashes were located in the rear of the cabin. Those who are afraid of flying should choose the rear part. In this case, psychologically the flight will be endured more comfortably.

Azure Space seats are located near emergency exits, so they are much more comfortable. There is enough free space so as not to disturb the passengers sitting next to you even if you need to leave your seat. On the Boeing 757, these seats are located in the following rows: row 1 (all), row 11 (BCDE), row 12 (A and F), and all of row 31.

History of creation

The development of the Boeing 757 airliner began in the late 70s as part of the development of a unified family of 7x7 aircraft. The aircraft was intended to replace the outdated 727 airliner and had many similarities in appearance with its predecessor. The first sketches included a tail with raised horizontal planes. But later this decision was abandoned in favor of the classic tail with a lower horizontal stabilizer.

The main goal of creating the airliner was to reduce the cost of air travel. To achieve this, the aircraft was equipped with a wing with a modernized profile, dual-circuit turbojet engines and an electronic flight system, which made it possible to optimize flight parameters.

Initially, it was planned to produce two versions of the machine - with a standard and shortened fuselage.

The Boeing 757-100 airliner with a short fuselage never reached production. The first orders for the aircraft, designated 757-200, were placed in late summer 1979.

The Boeing Corporation intended to equip Model 757 aircraft with Rolls-RoyceRB211 or GeneralElectricCF6 turbofan engines. However, the second supplier had difficulties with the development of the project, so it was replaced by Pratt & Whitney.

Construction of prototypes and testing, which began in February 1982, were successful. The first production aircraft arrived at EasternAirLines and took off in January 1983. The mid-range Boeing 757 remained on assembly lines until 2004. In total, the Boeing Corporation delivered to customers, as already mentioned, 1050 aircraft. These include 55 aircraft of the extended version of the Boeing 757-300, designed to carry 289 passengers.

Design

The Boeing 757 airliner is a monoplane with a swept wing located at the bottom of the fuselage. The power structure of the wing is built on two spars passing through the fuselage.

The wing has a special profile developed at the Boeing Aerodynamics Center for this type of aircraft.

On the wing there is a mechanization consisting of ailerons, flaps and brake flaps. Plastic and composite materials are widely used in the design of control panels, which was new at the time the airliner was created.

The aircraft fuselage has a cross-section in the shape of a figure 8, consisting of two circles of similar diameter. Inside there is a deck designed to accommodate passenger seats. The below-deck space has a maximum height of 1369 mm, used to accommodate luggage. The fuselage design provides increased safety in case of accidents due to the introduction of programmable deformation zones.

The fuel supply is located in caisson tanks located between the wing spars. The tanks hold up to 4259 liters of fuel. The flight range of the Boeing 757-200 airliner with Rolls-RoyceRB211 engines, which are characterized by increased efficiency, reaches 7080 km.


The Boeing 757-200 aircraft uses a three-post landing gear with a rotating nose gear. On the nose strut with two wheels there is a spotlight installation used to illuminate the runway during takeoff and landing. The main racks are equipped with two pairs of wheels. All wheels have disc brakes. Carbon fiber is used to make the discs, which improves the temperature stability of the brakes.

Engines

The Boeing 757-200 airliner can be equipped with two Rolls-RoyceRB211 or Pratt&WhitneyPW2037/2040 turbofan engines. The engines are located in fairings mounted on pylons under the wing. The bulk of the aircraft are equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines, but the first customers received aircraft with a Rolls-Royce power plant.

It is worth noting that the Boeing 757 was the first aircraft of the corporation to be equipped with foreign-made engines.

Cabin

The crew of the Boeing 757-200 aircraft consists of two people located in the bow cabin. The cabin is separated from the passenger compartment by a bulkhead with a door. Between the commander's and co-pilot's seats there is a space intended for installing an inspector's or observer's seat.


To simplify control, an autopilot and an electronic navigation system are used. Antennas for navigation systems and radars are located in front of the cockpit and are covered by a fairing. Electronic equipment allows automatic flight, from the moment of climb to landing.

Three layout options have been developed for Boeing 757 airliners, differing in the arrangement of seats in the cabin:

  1. Tourist type, designed only for economy class. The seats are installed in two rows in three groups along the length of the cabin - 60, 111 and 60 seats. All seats are the same, designed for three people. Bathrooms are located at the beginning of the cabin and between the second and third groups of seats.
  2. Option for two classes. In the front part of the cabin there are 6 double business class seats. Immediately behind them are economy class seats. Depending on the installation density, the number of seats is 162…182. The seats are three-seater, however, when configured for 182 passengers, there is one double seat, installed closer to the bathroom.
  3. Three-class option. In the bow there are 7 double first class seats with increased pitch. These are followed by 28 business class seats. Economy class passengers are located further down, with 113 seats available. The salon is equipped with an additional bathroom located in the rear section.

In total, Boeing offered nine options for seating passengers in the cabin with a number of seats from 178 to 239. Most options consisted of installing two rows of three-person seats and a central aisle for boarding. For boarding, there were supposed to be three doors located on each side. There were four emergency exits above the wing plane. There was an option equipped with four doors on each side, which were also used for evacuation.


Passenger luggage is located on shelves in the cabin and in a compartment located in the lower part of the fuselage. The luggage compartments are made of high-strength plastic with a volume of 54 liters per passenger.

Modifications and production

Based on the 757 model, several variants were created, differing in capacity and purpose:

  • the cargo version 757-200PF (short for PackageFreigther), created for the needs of the logistics company UPS, is distinguished by the absence of windows and a cargo hatch on the side of the fuselage;
  • the combined version of the 757-M Combi, which allows you to transport 150 passengers and cargo placed in three containers;
  • small-scale C-32A, designed to transport high-ranking officials, commissioned by the US Air Force;
  • passenger Boeing757-300 extended by 7090 mm, equipped with an additional tail support;
  • the remaining version of the project is the 757-100, designed for 150 passengers.

The most popular variant was the 757-200, built in an amount of more than 950 copies. 80 aircraft were built in the cargo version, but after 2010, several dozen passenger aircraft were modified to the transporter standard. The exact number of converted Boeing 757 aircraft is unknown.

Prospects

Many Boeing 757 aircraft continue to be actively used, despite the fact that the machine is considered obsolete.

An important role is played by a reliable design, which ensures a low percentage of losses due to accidents.

During operation, 8 cars were destroyed in accidents, while only four died due to technical problems. Two aircraft were lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, one crashed in the famous crash over Lake Constance and another crashed in a collision.

But the years are gradually taking their toll, and the Boeing 757-200 is increasingly used by small airlines on lines with small passenger volumes. It is almost impossible to meet an airplane on major routes, since it has been replaced by more economical and comfortable ones.
