In 1988, Airbus introduced the new A320 airliner. For the finished product, the goal was to gain an advantage over its competitor, the Boeing 737.

Soon after the A320 entered official service, it became clear that the new aircraft was receiving the expected interest from potential buyers. Therefore, the company decided to expand the lineup by creating modifications. By 1994, it produced the Airbus A321. The aircraft became the largest of the entire A320 series, could accommodate up to 220 people and could fly slightly longer distances than the basic version.

Increased attention to the new airliner was associated with its features. What was of most interest was the widespread use of digital technologies. They helped control the aircraft, provided increased comfort to passengers and raised safety to a new level. The use of composites in aircraft has also become attractive, which has a positive effect on technical specifications and the capabilities of the A321.

Until 2008, the assembly of airliners was carried out in France, where individual elements were brought on cargo aircraft or sea vessels. Production of the A321 was later moved to Germany. Some parts of the aircraft are created in China and the UK.

The fuel reserve is 30030 liters. With a specific consumption of 18.2 g/pass-kg and an hourly expenditure of 3,200 kg, this is enough to cover a distance of up to 5,600 km, taking into account the maximum commercial load.

Airliner design

According to the Airbus aerodynamic design, both the A321 and the A320, which has become the older version, are twin-engine low-wing aircraft with a swept wing and single-fin vertical tail. Both are designed for medium-haul airlines. The A321 model turned out to be slightly longer, so it can carry more passengers. The basic layout allows for 185 seats in a two-class version or 220 seats in a one-class cabin.

When creating the aircraft, various composite materials were used. Most of all they were used in wings with stabilizers. This solution made it possible to reduce the total weight of the aircraft, increase the permissible payload and improve technical performance.

The airliner received a reinforced wing, characterized by increased reliability. It has special endings called sharklets. They are made as winglets and are designed for improved versions of the A320. Company representatives note that sharklets increase the aerodynamics of the aircraft, reduce fuel consumption by 3.5% and minimize carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. The absence of such winglets would lead to a reduction in flight range by 180 km or a reduction in the maximum payload by 500 kg.

The new CFM56-5A/5B or IAE V2500-A5 turbofan engines have become more powerful. The noise level from them has decreased, fuel consumption has become more economical, and emissions of harmful substances have been reduced. They are placed one on each side under the wing.

The cockpit is equipped with EFIS digital avionics, which includes six special displays on the aircraft instrument panel, where all the necessary flight information is displayed. If individual elements fail, a corresponding warning will immediately appear so that pilots can take the necessary measures in a timely manner.

The presence of the Airbus A321 black box provides information about the flight and negotiations after a disaster, should it occur. It is located inside the tail compartment and can withstand severe impacts and high temperatures, thanks to which it remains intact even if the airliner crashes.

Models and modifications

The aircraft is produced in three modifications: A321-100, A321-200, A321neo. The first is practically not used, and the second is gradually being replaced by the third. Each new version received its own improvements, which gave it a number of advantages.

The first model A321-100 was produced from 1994 with V2500 or CFM56 engines. The plane could have become a serious competitor even to the Boeing 757, but this did not happen. The reason for this was insufficiently advanced characteristics. Therefore, in 1996, a second model was introduced.

The Airbus A321-200 received an increased take-off weight and increased flight range, which was achieved by installing additional fuel tanks. The airliner became more successful than its predecessor and quickly spread to many major airlines.

In 2016, the Airbus A321neo was introduced, which became an improved version of the basic aircraft. It is equipped with new modernized PW1100G-JM or CFMI Leap-1A engines, providing thrust of 15,000 and 14,500 kgf. Fuel consumption decreased by 15%.

According to technical information, the A321neo can fly 950 km further and carry 2 tons more load. Speed performance has also been improved. The number of available seats on the plane has increased - it can accommodate up to 240 people in a single-class configuration.

The standard Airbus A321 is an aircraft divided into two classes with a total of 185 seats. 157 seats are in economy class in a 3-3 layout, and 28 seats are in business class in a 2-2 layout. The cabin width is 3.7 meters, the seats are soft and comfortable. The undoubted advantage is that the interior is equipped with good sound insulation.

On some aircraft (for example, those operating on charter lines), the standard equipment has been changed. There is no division into classes in such aircraft. The total number of places is 220.

You can get up without disturbing your neighbors and stretch your legs. These seats are also convenient because the stewards move with food and drinks from the first rows to the last. So passengers occupying these seats will have a fairly large choice
9-17 row	The seats are standard, not bad, not good, the distance between the seats does not allow tall and large passengers to sit comfortably
18th row (6 seats)	The seats are bad, located close to the economy class toilets. There's always a crowd of people here, it's very noisy

Row 20 (6 seats)	The best seats in this class are located on both sides of the windows (A and F). The fact is that due to the lack of seats in front, free space is created, you can sit comfortably. These are probably the best seats in the second part of economy class
21-29 row	Standard places, not bad, but not very good either
30 row	The places near the aisle, on both sides, are very uncomfortable. It is close enough to the toilets located in the rear section, so noise and a constant queue of people are guaranteed
31 rows (6 seats)	The worst seats are in economy class. Firstly, it is close to the toilets. Secondly, since there is a partition nearby, the backs of the seats do not recline, which creates additional discomfort

Thus, when choosing seats, you need to be guided by two factors: their proximity to toilets, kitchens, technical rooms and the presence of a partition nearby (the chairs will not recline). Large people are best seated on row 8 or 20; these are also the most comfortable seats for those traveling with children (row 19 is also suitable in this case, since the proximity of the toilets will be a plus, not a minus; you won’t have to walk with your child across the entire salon).

Note! Window seats and aisle seats have their advantages and disadvantages. It’s easier to go to the toilet from a seat near the aisle, and at the same time no one will disturb the person sitting at the window. The choice is up to the passenger: if you hope to sleep or work, choose a seat by the window; if you think that you will often go to the toilet, take a seat by the aisle.

As standard, the aircraft has 4 galleys and 4 lavatories. Business class has a wardrobe. There are also 6 seats for flight attendants.

35 rows. The chairs are thin and hard. The armrests are narrow, you can’t really rest your hand. Subjectively, the seats are more comfortable than in the B738, but many times more uncomfortable than in the previous A320/321. In general, not ice at all.

We will not dwell in detail on the description of the A321 business class. Just a couple of comments.

Some consider the disadvantages of the 1st row to be the nearby toilet and kitchen. We do not agree with this statement. Because these premises are used to service only this class, and there are few passengers in it - there should be no negative aspects in the form of noise and odors.

Row 7
The backs of the seats in this row do not recline completely due to the presence of the first row of economy class “behind the back”.

Economy class is located from rows 8 to 31.

Row 8
The seats in this row are places of increased comfort. They can be registered for an additional fee.

Rows 9-10
Standard seats with the benefits of seats located in the front of the cabin.

Row 11
The disadvantages of this series would be that the view from the window is partially blocked by the leading edge of the aircraft wing and the engine. Due to the proximity of the latter, increased noise during takeoff is possible.

Rows 12-17
For passengers in these rows, the views outside the window are covered by a wing. It also reduces noise in the cabin.

Row 18
It is not recommended to register tickets for this row. The views overboard are obscured by the wing; the seat backs do not recline. Behind us are the restrooms with all the consequences in the form of queues, slamming doors, hitting those sitting at the aisle, etc.

Row 19
Controversial series. On one side there are only 2 seats in a row. Superior seats. Registration for these seats requires a fee.
On the other hand, there are no seats at the porthole. And throughout the flight you will contemplate the toilets and people entering and leaving them.

Row 20
Mixed row. Seats A and F are premium seats due to the features of the front row (at an additional cost). Places B,C,E,F– regular chairs with standard pitch.
The downside is the proximity of the toilet stalls.

Rows 21-30
Standard seat pitch. Rows without minuses and pluses. Due to the presence of lavatory at the beginning and end of the sector, passengers will not accumulate in queues at the tail. But we would recommend taking seats in the middle of this part of the plane.
My only recommendation is to avoid aisle seats in row 30 if possible. People in need may touch you as they pass by.

Row 31
If there are no more seats, and you really need to fly, only in this case take seats in this row.
This row has only disadvantages - the backrests do not recline. There may not be a porthole next to you. Behind the back there is a toilet and a kitchen.

Airbus A321 in business class (16 seats) and economy class (167 seats) configuration

The economy class cabin occupies rows 8 to 35. Don't look for rows 5, 6 and 7. There is none of them.

Rows 8-10
The first row of economy class (8) does not have increased comfort. This is a standard row, like 9 and 10, with a normal seat pitch. The only plus is the nose of the plane.

Row 11
The astute reader will notice the different seat widths in this A321 economy class layout.
This is because the chairs in this particular row have different widths. With the same ticket price, please note.
In the 11th row there are 5, not 6 seats. It is positioned as Space+ and registration for it only costs an additional fee.
Now in detail:
Seat 11A has a minus in the form of an emergency exit, the design of which takes space away from the passenger’s personal space. Registration is free.
11B and 11C are full-fledged Space+.
11D and 11F are precisely seats with a reduced width. In addition, seat 11F has an emergency exit like 11A. Registration for this place is free.

Row 12
It’s worth taking a closer look at the seats in this row because of the presence in it, among the standard seats, of one superior seat – 12D. There is no seat in front and passengers with any leg length will not experience discomfort. You can register for it for free.
