Lloret de Mar: Real Spain or Resort Spain? The most popular city on the Costa Brava in detail: where to stay, what to see and which beach is best?

Europe, and indeed abroad, began for us precisely from this party place in Spain.

Lloret de Mar perfectly matched our input data: Schengen in the passport, a couple of hundred euros in your pocket and a burning fuse to relax brightly and see sunny Spain.

The history of the former fishing village of Lloret de Mar in Spain continues today, first of all, as a resort for a beach-burning destination.

Real life here begins at nightfall: there are more than 400 bars, restaurants and clubs in the city, each of which strives to stand out with an original program and lure tourists into more cocktails 🙂 World-famous DJs, music from the 80s and 90s, salsa motifs, laser shows and themed parties - there is no limit to the entertaining madness. Therefore, basically, the youth contingent from all Europe gathers. By the way, the Germans admiringly call Lloret de Mar the second Spanish Ibiza.

Surprisingly, frequent guests here are also pensioners, who are attracted by inexpensive hotels - good "triples" - and the Mediterranean Sea. By the way, we also rested in 3 stars. Family holidays with children, as practice shows, is also relevant, but only when living in a quiet part of the city near the Fenals beach (Platja de Fenals). There is just a choice of 4-5 * all-inclusive hotels, which is ideal for a trip with a child.

Coming to Spain in Lloret de Mar is definitely worth it for three reasons:

  1. Relaxed rhythm of life on the beach. During the day, everyone relaxes by the sea, at night they gather in nightclubs along the coast.
  2. The city is convenient as a starting point for trips to completely different directions: shopping outlets, Girona, Barcelona, Andorra and even France.
  3. Well, the main thing is that it is much cheaper to rest here!

Weather in Lloret de Mar - when is the best time to go?

When is the best time to go to Lloret de Mar? High season, in theory, lasts from May to October. In fact, the peak of tourist pilgrimage falls on July-August. We went on a tour in early May, it is cool to swim at this time, but +20 degrees of heat is ideal for walking and lying on the beach. Therefore, we liked visiting Andorra, Montserrat, Barcelona and Girona doubly 🙂

The autumn and spring months are not super popular, then the water does not warm up, then the rain gets wet. However, the weather in Lloret de Mar is conducive to beach holidays and these "unclaimed" periods. On the contrary, we advised you to go at this time - tours are much cheaper 🙂 The climate in the region is very mild: in winter, the air temperature even at night almost never drops below +10°C, and in summer you rarely see more than +28°C on a thermometer. Although on our trip on our own in 2017 it was more than +30°C. Once in a while it doesn't have to. We also went to Barcelona in May 2018 and the weather was great! (+21..+24°C)

In principle, everyone sets their own priorities, but, in our opinion, to fully enjoy the picturesque nature of Lloret de Mar - bays with rocks protruding from emerald water, green hills, pine forests - and Spain as a whole will turn out exactly in the initial and final intervals season.

Where to buy tours to Spain? (Costa Brava)

We went on a tour, and at that time it cost a ridiculous amount - about 20,000 rubles for one person for 7 days. Then we went to agencies in search of the cheapest tours, there were no sites for online booking. In 2020, the price tag is slightly higher, but the best deals can now be found online yourself:

Firstly, best deals from all tour operators are collected on one site (as in Booking). Secondly, there is no extra charge for the work of a travel agent / rent of premises / cookies in the office. Thirdly, you are the master of your choice, protected from the skillful pressure of third parties 🙂 Read honest reviews about hotels, look at photos and decide whether to take or look further. Often, having seen a tour on the agency’s website and coming to their office, such a price is no longer found. Online, this is not a problem.

Tours to Lloret de Mar in 2020 cost an average of 48,000 rubles per week for two, provided early booking for at least 2 months.

You can count on last-minute tours to the Costa Brava, but, of course, closer to the height of the hot season (July-August). By the way, you can buy a tour to Spain before the start of the season in May even cheaper.

Things to Do in Lloret de Mar

What to see in Lloret de Mar? Excursion tours, will undoubtedly offer a rich program, but you probably know how it usually happens. If not galloping around Europe, then with the delivery to all sorts of places to shake off money 🙂

Building your route is easy. It is in this corner of Spain that, first of all, it is worth seeing the symbol of the city - the Castell de Sant Joan castle, located on a hill. Worthy of attention are the picturesque gardens by the sea of Saint Clotilde, an unusual cemetery (Modernist Cemetery), where you can see the real Catalan Art Nouveau of many family crypts and tombstones, the Maritime Museum in a mansion on the city embankment. Also of interest is the "Cat's House" - a unique museum dedicated to purring animals.

As for the surroundings:

  • Monastery of Montserrat with the Black Madonna- the patroness of Catalonia, towering on the mountains of amazing shape. Here we climbed up the hiking trails and saw the monastery from the top of the mountains. Fresh mountain air upstairs 🙂

A little advice: it is better to look for Russian guides on the spot, not from a travel agency. If there are two of you, then you can team up with other tourists and in the 4-6th go to explore places in comfortable conditions, and it will be easier to decide to leave faster or stay easier)

First trip abroad

  • - an hour from Lloret de Mar by bus. We went there for 1 day on our own without guides. We walked around the city, sat in a cafe. A one-way bus ticket then cost around 3-5 euros.

Went for 10 euros round trip to Girona

  • Andorra- it is also advantageous to go here with a personal guide by car (you can use the same one with which you went to Montserrat). Ideal for shopping, walking with mountain views. My friends liked it very much, but they left about 300 euros there, having bought a lot of good clothes.
  • - we went to the capital of Catalonia on a tour from the hotel, I don’t remember the exact cost, but next time I would also gather a company and rent a car. I remember that the bus was not very convenient, you are very dependent on other groups and you are afraid to be late and be left alone. 🙂 We advise anyone to go to Barcelona at least for 1-3 days, now this is our favorite city.

On our first trip, Park Güell was still free

  • Port Aventura- a must visit place if you like amusement parks. So far, while we visited, this is the best and cheapest park in the world 🙂 In the same Universal Studio (were in Los Angeles), there is no such thing. Then (in 2013) a ticket cost about 23 euros, now from 55 euros per adult (although it is worth noting that Ferrari Land has been added). Be sure to ride Shambhala. We rode it as many as 2 times.
  • Church of Sant Romà (Sant Roma) in Catalan Gothic style
  • theater-museum of the genius of surrealism Salvador Dali in Figueres and Pubol Castle(Gala Dali)

With children, you can still go to Water Park, Marineland water park or look at animals in the Aqualeon mini-zoo.

In Spain, tourists will also be interested in numerous sculptures that fascinate with their monumentality. Do not forget to make a wish at the monument to the fisherwoman, and it will surely come true. Donna Marinera is installed at the end of the Central Beach, and nearby is a magnificent observation deck.

Excursions from Lloret de Mar

We will list the most popular excursions and indicate approximate prices from local travel agencies to make it easier for you to navigate. Of course, the tour operator will ask for a similar trip much more expensive.

Where to go organized from Lloret de Mar?

  • Girona and the Salvador Dali Museum - € 45-50
  • Panoramic tour of Barcelona - € 35-45 + entrance to the Sagrada € 22

For comparison: this tour costs €100 from a tour operator

  • Montserrat – €50-55
  • Amusement Park Port Aventura - € 63-65 (transfer and entrance ticket)
  • Andorra – €55-65
  • South of France (Collioure and Perpignan) – €50-55
  • 2-day trip to France (Nice, Monaco, San Remo and Cannes) – €215-225

If you get to Barcelona / Girona on your own, and you still need a tour of the area, then this is a storehouse of all the cool excursions in Russian. Look ↓

What to do besides sightseeing in Lloret de Mar? Spain is traditionally loved for sea waves and sun!

First trip to Europe (Lloret de Mar)

The beaches of the Costa Brava are officially recognized as one of the best in the world. The most popular of them:

  • The central beach of Lloret de Mar, with a length of 1630 m (on the photo is just it). The most noisy, crowded and haunting at night nearby hotels
  • the second largest is the Fenals beach, surrounded by a pine forest and especially visited by Russian tourists. Here the situation is calmer, and the beach itself is clean and well-groomed.
  • especially beautiful and secluded - Sa Boadeia beach - with a "children's" area in one part of it and a nudist one in the other
  • a cozy beach located on the way to Blanes - Santa Cristina
  • beach in the picturesque bay of Sa Caleta not far from the Central beach.

The weather in Lloret de Mar allows you to go to the beaches and “get” a golden tan in the spring, but it’s better to wait until the end of May or the beginning of June with swimming.
The price for an umbrella and sunbed is €14 (7+7).

The best resort hotels

Where to stay? We have made a selection of good hotels in the resort. As for "all inclusive" and Lloret de Mar: Spain is generally not famous for the quality and adequate cost of all inclusive (except Mallorca), so it's better to choose the good old half board (breakfast and dinner) or full board (3 meals a day) .

Please note that the price is for a tour for two in the season for 7 nights with a flight from Moscow.

Lloret de Mar or Lloret de Mar is a city and a Mediterranean coastal resort belonging to the province of Girona and located on the Costa Brava.

Lloret de Mar is a popular holiday destination and is considered the heart of the party life of the Costa Brava.

The rise of tourism in Lloret de Mar

The first settlers of Lloret de Mar were Iberians who inhabited what is now Catalonia around the 4th century BC.

The Iberians were replaced by the Romans, who established trade relations with neighboring settlements. The first documentary mention of Lloret de Mar dates back to 966.

The current nucleus of the population was formed in the fifteenth century around the beach, at that time located about 1 kilometer from the coast. By the 16th century, the center of the city had moved to the coast.

In the 19th century, Lloret was transformed, receiving a new round in architecture and economy. It was the “epoch of Indianos”, during which many local residents went overseas (America, Cuba, etc.), where they conducted business activities - traded, engaged in shipbuilding, etc., and then, having become rich, returned to their homeland, but no longer in the old ancestral homes, but erected new architectural buildings, at that time a curiosity for the province of Lloret architecture. According to their orders, neoclassical, modernist or eclectic villas were erected in Lloret and the surrounding area, some of which can still be seen today.

As the resort of Lloret began to receive the first foreign tourists in the 50s of the 20th century, then the old estates began to turn into hotels and recreation places, part of the vineyards were urbanized, the beaches were ennobled, the buildings of the central city core were connected with the buildings of the beach areas, and the city itself grew deep into the mainland.

However, the beginning of the development of tourism in Lloret was by no means sudden. Even before the middle of the 20th century, in the twenties and even earlier, rich families from Barcelona liked to spend their summers in the area. Among the most famous vacationers of that era, we should mention the famous Catalan poet Josep Carnera, who in 1919 in the magazine D'ací, d'allà described Lloret de Mar with the epithet "paradise on earth".

Currently, Lloret is a famous resort that attracts guests both with its beaches stretching for 9 kilometers along the coast and the promenade, which is a popular area for walking and relaxing, an abundance of bars and restaurants, thanks to which Lloret received the status of the most party and youth resort of the Costa Brava, as well as various sights and coastal paths that previously served as sentinel routes.

The beaches of Lloret de Mar

The city has six sandy beaches, which in the high beach season has all the necessary beach infrastructure to enjoy the sun and the sea with complete comfort.

On the beaches: sun loungers and parasols (average cost 7 Euro per sun lounger or umbrella; 19.50 Euro - two sun loungers and an umbrella), showers and toilets, bins and decks for ease of movement, beach cafe-bars and kiosks with drinks and ice cream. Also on most beaches there are places for water activities.

Lloret de Mar has been awarded four blue flags. They marked: Lloret beach, Fenals beach, Sa Boadels bay and Santa Cristina beach.

In addition to sandy beaches, within Lloret there is a rocky coast, along which there are small bays (semi-wild and wild), where tourists and locals also relax during the season.

Fenals Beach is the second largest and most popular beach in Lloret de Mar, after the central beach of Lloret.

The length of the beach is 700 meters, and its average width is 45 meters.

Above the line of Fenals beach lies the promenade, where you can find: kiosks with snacks, ice cream and drinks; several cafe-restaurants; sports ground.

Boadella beach (Playa de Sa Boadella)

Boadella Beach or Sa Boadels Bay is a beach-bay located behind the hill with the gardens of Santa Clotilde.

The beach has a length of 250 meters and its average width is 40 meters.

Nudism is allowed on the beach.

Many who have visited Lloret de Mar come here again and again, saying that this city has a special magic. Ancient traditions and modernity are surprisingly harmoniously intertwined here. Walking along the winding seaside streets, plunging into evening peace after the heat of the day subsides, is full of inexplicable charm. But this is only a short moment, because with the onset of darkness the streets will be filled with a noisy flow of young people, bars and discos will open their doors.
