We present a new article about Malgrat de Mar - the fastest growing resort on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

Why do people go to Malgrat de Mar?

The tourist season in the old seaside town begins in April and lasts until October. The coast of the resort with its huge beaches stretching along the city promenade and calm sea makes Malgrat de Mar a great place to stay with young children.

In the so-called "Old Town" you can admire the beauty of historical monuments: the church of Sant Nicolau de Bari, built in the 16th century, the Torre d'en Riera tower - a peculiar and spectacular building of the 16th-17th centuries and magnificent palaces, villas, built in the Art Nouveau architectural style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the "New City" a modern area has been built with many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, among which the palm is held by Tropicana - the most famous club on the coast, and hotels.

It is never boring during the day, especially on the lively Passey Maritim promenade, where there are numerous cafes and small shops, and in the evenings you can go to open-air discos and watch a fireworks show.

But parents should not worry about this: in the late evening, discos are held in closed disco clubs, and relative calm reigns in the central streets.

How to get there

From Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities, you need to buy a ticket to El Prat Airport. Cheap tickets to Barcelona from Moscow you can buy by examining the current offers of airlines:

If you have not purchased a travel package that includes a transfer from the airport and back, then you can get from Barcelona to the resort center by suburban train - the main means of transport on the coast, which stops at all resort towns, including the town of Salou, which we talked about in the past.

The distance between Barcelona and Malgrat de Mar is 60 km. About 30 minutes are train intervals.

Benefits of a private taxi transfer:

  • you need to know if your plane arrives at night, public transport does not work, so you will either have to spend the night at the airport or hire a taxi, but then the notorious language barrier arises, taxi drivers do not speak Russian and speak very little or no English;
  • you will be met at Barcelona airport with a sign with your name on it;
  • will track your flight and wait if it is delayed;
  • you will be assigned a Russian-speaking driver who will help you load your luggage;
  • you will immediately go to the hotel, saving time and effort especially for children, because in the case of a group transfer along the coast, all tourists will be transported on the bus and it is not a fact that your turn will be the first.

Accordingly, from Malgrat de Mar, you can also go by train to other resort centers. The distance from Malgrat de Mar to Calella is 7 km, to Girona 45 km.

You can also get to Calella by taxi, for about 16 €, to Girona - for about 75 € and to Lloret de Mar - for 25 €.

Instead of buying a permanent one-time tickets, you can purchase a subscription for 10 trips (bonotren), which will be cheaper.

Beaches

Along the entire seaside town stretches a beach covered with coarse yellow-golden sand, under the general name of Malgrat de Mar, with an approximate length of 4 km and a width of 50 m, which is divided into the following beaches

  • Astillero
  • La Conca
  • Tropic Park
  • Central (marked with the Blue Flag for environmental friendliness and livability).

All beaches offer rental of umbrellas and sun loungers.(estimated cost is 8 € per set), small boats and water bikes.

Of the water activities, riding on inflatable "bananas" is provided, a windsurfing and sailing school operates, and sports grounds are equipped.

Malgrat de Mar Hotels

The seaside town is dominated by 3-star hotels hotels that are focused on families with children.

Amaraigua 4*

The hotel is located on the seafront, 80 m from the bus stop, 400 m from the railway station and the city center.

Fergus Maripins 4*

The hotel with 4 buildings and 200 rooms is located 150 meters from the sea, close to a bus stop, bars, restaurants, a sports center and shops.

Monteplaya 3*

Completely renovated in 2013, the hotel is located 50 meters from the beach and 25 meters from the bus stop.

Also, couples for holidays with kids opt for such hotels as: Reymar 3 *, Reymar Playa 3 *, Rosa Nautica 3 * and Sorra D’or Beach Club 3 *.

If the weather has turned bad, it’s tiring to be on the beach, the shops are closed for a siesta and you don’t know what else to see in Malgrat de Marv, there is a great solution. Go on your own, with children Francesca Macia City Park(Parc Francesc Macia).

It is located on the outskirts of the town, a 15-20 minute walk from the main hotels. It is very easy to find it on the map.

The park is very popular with local residents - on weekends they come in large numbers with families with food supplies to have fun. I must say that the territory of the park is ideal for this - in the shade of trees there are large tables with benches.

For children funny sculptures are installed throughout the park in the form of fly agaric mushrooms, daisies, huge shoes with a book on top, pencils, etc. And in the evenings, the Spaniards hold interesting contests and unusual installations. What can not but rejoice, the entrance to Francesca Macia Park is completely free.

TOURIST ANSWERS:

It would seem, in this Mediterranean town. which is located at the junction of the Costa Maresme and the Costa Brava, there is nothing interesting, and for the sights you need to go to Barcelona, which is conveniently connected to Malgrat de Mar by a railway with electric trains crouching quietly like a cat ... Yes, in an hour with a little you can easily reach the capital of Catalonia...but don't rush...

Do not rush because this town has its own charm, a kind of "discreet charm of the bourgeoisie" ... Of course, the sea and 4.5 km of Malgrat's beaches (Astillero, La Conca and Central) are the number 1 attraction, it is no coincidence that this town is so loved by tourists from England and Germany. After the beach, it is very pleasant to walk along the Passey Maritim promenade, look at the vibrant life of the coastal zone of the new Malgrat with its hotels and discos, take a breath of the invigorating Mediterranean air. But Malgrat de Mar is not only beaches and hotels. Enter the historic city, see the medieval church of Sant Nicolau de Bari, which seems to me to be from the 16th century, admire the tower of Torre d'en Riera, note how beautiful the mansions of the 19th and 20th centuries are, how elaborate and beautiful in their pretentiousness of modern style ... A mini-train runs around the town, where for ten euros and an hour of time you will pass the whole town, but it is better to walk through it slowly ... There are two natural parks in Malgrat de Mar, climb the hill, in Castel Park and you will have a breathtaking view of Malgrat de, Mar and the Mediterranean Sea, which has already become dear and cozy to you, and Francesc Macia Park will not require any effort from you to get to it ... A little aside closer to the track there is an exhibition of dinosaurs (8 euros), and if you want to enjoy the rides to your heart's content, then you can go to the Marineland water park near Malgrat, where for 15 euros you will not only ride all imaginable and unthinkable water rides, but also watch a dolphin show , parrots, cats.

The embankment will take you to neighboring Santa Susanna, there is no border between the towns at all, where you really need to take a mini-train too and climb up the mountain for 15 euros, where you can admire the villas of the 18th-20th century, absolutely awesome in beauty ...

The Mediterranean towns of Spain and, in particular, Malgrat de Mar are a kind of pearls on the coast. You just have to be able to see them...

Helpful answer?

Malgrad de Mar, at first glance, is very inconspicuous among the other resort towns of the Mediterranean coast, one of many. But this would be so if the city did not have its own special attractions, which I found out about by chance.

Being here on vacation somehow for a couple of days I didn’t “set aside” the campaign. It was cloudy and cool. You can’t go to the sea, it’s boring at the hotel, and there were no suitable excursion tours for these days of the week. So I decided to take a walk around the city. Previously, only the embankment was covered, on which there are many shopping arcades, cafes, restaurants, but there was no point in going there again and I went in the opposite direction deep into the town to residential areas. I read in the booklet that real estate is very expensive in Malgrad de Mar and many celebrities of the country live here.

Walking along the very cozy streets of the city, I managed to see a very remarkable nature. Beautiful trees with dark purple foliage were common.

At first, they were all high-rise buildings; by the way, they often coexist with hotels.

I lived at the Papi Hotel, so the windows and balconies of the residential building overlooked the hotel, and in the evenings you could see local residents who, like us tourists, watched an animation show organized by the hotel management.

There is a fur shop in the town. But I decided not to buy here. I also know from Greece that it is better to purchase such goods in specialized centers.

Moving deeper into Malgrad de Mar, I noticed a narrow path leading somewhere up to the mountainous part. Curiosity or a desire to see something new pushed me to climb. The charming little house made a special impression. Its facade was decorated with sea shells. How could you not take a picture here.

Not knowing yet where I was going, I managed to go to the park. As I found out later from the hotel staff, this is the park named after F. Macia, the first president of the Catalan government. The park is small in size, there are magnificent coniferous trees.

There is a lighthouse on the observation deck. From here you have a magnificent view of the entire residential quarter of the city.

You can go down from the park by funicular, in fact, as you can go up, but from the side of the central square. It also houses one of the largest temples on the coast. This is the temple of St. Nicholas. It turns out that Malrad de Mar has been inhabited since the 13th century. Therefore, such buildings are not uncommon here. Near the temple on the right side in a small one-story wing there is an art gallery. There is also a small park where you can relax.

The bench against the background of the wall, made in the same mosaic technique, which was used by the great Antonio Gaudi in Park Güell, attracted attention.

A lot of streets with low 2 and 3-storey houses diverge from the square. The first floors are usually occupied by shops. One of these streets is inhabited by immigrants from China. This is your own Chinatown. They sell mainly clothes, which are cheaper than in stores on the main shopping street.

A random route through the town made it possible to see its sights, about which you will find little information anywhere. Therefore, if possible, do not be too lazy to see the city in which you spend your vacation. You can buy a map of the city, although they are usually given to tourists in hotels upon check-in, or ask the reception staff about what iconic places are there.

In the old part, all schools, gardens, city hall and institutions are located, where most of the pensioners have a rest.

Astillero stretches for about a kilometer, along it there are hotels, summer bars and restaurants right on the sand, there are also picnic areas. The longest beach is La Conca, it occupies 2600 meters along the seashore. A big plus is the remoteness from urban developments, and therefore it is ideal for those who love wild beaches.

There are no attractions in the new part of the city, as everything here is developed for tourists. There are many not only hotels, but also bars, restaurants, clubs, souvenir shops and everything that is necessary for tourists to relax.

The resort of Malgrat de Mar is perfect for young people, as there are many clubs, bars, and for couples with children, thanks to its clean equipped beaches.

I have written quite a lot here about my recent trip to Spain, and I will probably stop there for the time being. Although there are still hundreds and hundreds of photographs. But life does not stand still, it moves forward. Ahead - other thoughts, new stories.

It is quite possible that later I will return to the Spanish theme, but let there be a break for now. And let this temporary final post be about that hospitable town where I spent my vacation.

Malgrat de Mar is a sunny town in the suburbs of Barcelona, by the blue-blue Mediterranean Sea.

This part of the sea is considered Balearic, and the coast belongs to the Costa del Maresme and lies south of the Costa Bravo.

The town itself is small, you can get around it in a day if you wish. On the one hand, the town of Santa Susanna adjoins Malgrat de Mar (we went there on foot, the cities practically merge with each other); on the other side, but further away, is Blanes.
Travel to the center of Barcelona by train in just over an hour. The train runs every 20-30 minutes, the ticket costs about 5 euros. Taxis are expensive there, they take more than 100 euros to Barcelona airport.

All beaches in the town are municipal, they are free. But the pleasure of lying there on a rental sun lounger under a large beach umbrella is paid. Just like everywhere else in Spain. Locals, for example, carry all this stuff to the beach with them :)
Tourists are more often content with towels on the sand and their small umbrellas.

The city is conditionally divided into two parts - historical (or "old town"), and modern, built up with hotels.

What everyone immediately advises to see in the town is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in the 16th century, in which Catholic services are still held.

Of course, I could not take pictures during the service, but I was able to capture the inside of the cathedral at another time.

Very close to the cathedral is a hill, on top of which there is a picturesque park. You can climb the hill on a special free funicular-cabin that goes along the rails.

Even from the funicular window you can enjoy a beautiful view of the old town.

Below in the photographs - a view of the city from the observation deck from the top of the hill.

I have always loved taking pictures of trees. And it's clearly worth it.

The top of the hill is crowned with a tower.

The decorations of the park impress with their gigantomania :)

Yeah, nobody lost their shoe?

How about a giant brownie?

And more about the town.

There are no tall buildings in Malgrat de Mar, if only a few hotels. Most buildings are no higher than five stories.

The main street that runs along the railway and the beach is always full of tourists. There you can meet street artists, artists, numerous souvenir merchants.

What hotel guides always warn about is that this street is full of touring thieves from different countries, that you need to look after your bags and pockets very well. Yes, vigilance never hurts and nowhere :)

What about tourists without souvenirs? But no way. Moreover, souvenirs are sold from various countries and peoples :)

One of the fashionable attractions for tourists is aquariums with special fish that bite the old skin of the legs. Such an intricate fish-peeling.

And finally, of course, the sea. It is good always and in any weather.
I took this photo below in the early morning, just after dawn.

And these two photos - in one of the few cloudy days that were on vacation. This sea has its own charm.

All twelve days in this town flew by unnoticed. I would gladly return to it again. And how do you know :)

My other stories and photos from a trip to Spain.
