History of Diveevo

300 years ago, a monastery was founded in the Sarov forests, which went down in Russian history as one of the most significant, distinguished by its special way of life and strict monastic rule. Monastic life in the Sarov desert reached great heights. The monastery became famous for its traditions of eldership; the names of many of its spiritual ascetics are known. It was the Sarov Hermitage that gave the world the Venerable Father Seraphim. Father Seraphim began his communication with the people when, on the orders of the Mother of God, he came out of seclusion, seven years before his death. The news about him spread throughout Russia.

The history of the monastery began in the 18th century with the construction of the Church of the Kazan Mother of God with the chapels of St. Nicholas and St. Archdeacon Stephen. Alexandra Melgunova (Mother Alexandra), together with four novices, organized a monastery here, managing the community under the leadership of the elders of the Sarov Monastery. In the young monk Seraphim, Mother Alexandra saw a future ascetic and continuer of the work she had begun. After the death of A.S. Melgunova's community continued to live according to the strict rules of the Sarov Monastery.

In 1861, the community was transformed into the Seraphim-Diveevsky Monastery. At the beginning of the twentieth century. the monastery already had more than 1 thousand sisters. At that time the monastery was a rich architectural complex. It had cells, a refectory, a hospital, a school, and outside the fence - two hotels, a mill, and a water pump.

In 1927, the monastery was closed, ten years later the last of its sisters were expelled from Diveevo. Only in 1989 was the Trinity Cathedral reconsecrated, and a year later the activities of the Seraphim-Diveevsky Monastery were resumed.

Seraphim predicted the special significance of the monastery, which should become the first women's Lavra in history, and was sure that he himself would be located in it many years after his death. As is known, the relics of Seraphim of Sarov, lost in the 1920s, were rediscovered and transported to Diveevo in 1991.

In 2003, the 100th anniversary of the glorification of St. Seraphim of Sarov as a saint was widely celebrated, and in 2004, the 250th anniversary of his birth. In connection with these celebrations, most of the temples and buildings of the monastery were restored.

Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery

Diveevo is considered the fourth and only inheritance of the Mother of God in Russia. Especially revered Our Lady's Groove- a place “through which the feet of the Queen of Heaven passed” and which the Antichrist will not be able to cross. The beginning of the Kanavka was laid by Father Seraphim himself in 1829, and the restoration of the Kanavka began in 1997. Everyone who comes to Diveevo walks along the Canal of the Mother of God, and according to the will of Seraphim of Sarov, they read a prayer to the Mother of God.
