General airline rules on what are the permissible dimensions (dimensions) of baggage on an airplane: what is oversized, excess baggage and hand luggage. Baggage and hand luggage Baggage size based on the sum of three dimensions

Global statistics clearly say - . But this was achieved on a global scale only thanks to strict standards and transportation rules. One of these norms is permissible weight of baggage on an airplane for one passenger.

Despite the fact that many consider this norm to be a whim of the airlines, it is based on serious calculations. Any aircraft certified for flights has such characteristics as maximum take-off weight and permissible payload weight. Exceeding the weight of the aircraft according to these indicators directly affects.

In addition, it is not difficult to guess that each “extra” place requires additional effort to process baggage, register it, control it, and deliver it. Therefore, budget airlines, which make money by cutting costs as much as possible, are trying to limit passengers in this matter even in 2018.

Global standards and rules

What is the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane in 2019? To begin with, let us explain that all baggage accompanying passengers during the flight can be divided into 3 categories:

  • Personal items
  • Hand luggage
  • Baggage

Free of charge, according to the law of the Russian Federation and international rules, the airline is obliged to transport 1 piece of baggage weighing no more than 10 kg and personal belongings (reading book, umbrella, laptop, etc.). Companies transport everything else at their own discretion, guided by their own rules.

At the same time, as in any other issues related to air transportation, you can focus on a simple truth - the more expensive the ticket, the greater the permissible weight of baggage on the plane, which a passenger can carry for free.

Most modern airlines, including the leaders of the domestic air transportation market, evaluate all their passenger’s baggage according to three criteria:

  • number of seats;
  • weight of one place;
  • dimensions of one place.

When purchasing a ticket, you need to pay attention to the tariff plan - it is according to which each airline determines how many seats and how much weight a passenger can carry. In addition, loyalty program participants are given additional privileges.

Important! When calculating the weight of luggage on the plane before the flight, keep in mind that for a child under 2 years old, even without their own seat, you can take 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 10 kg for free.

What luggage can you take on board an airplane in 2018?

Bags and suitcases that a traveler takes with him inside an airplane are called hand luggage.

You can bring 1 piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 10 kilograms on board the aircraft free of charge. This norm is guaranteed by law.
But there is a small nuance here - most airlines have restrictions on the size of hand luggage. The most commonly used are: dimensions no more than 55x40x20 cm or no more than 115 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions.

In turn, airlines reward travelers who buy expensive tickets to high-flight airlines by increasing their rates.
For example, in 2018, airline business class passengers can take 2 pieces of hand luggage into the cabin with a total weight of no more than 15 kg.
When discussing the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane, we must not forget about personal items that are not considered carry-on luggage by law.

In excess of the established free baggage allowance and without additional payment, the passenger has the right to transport individual items, the list of which is precisely defined in paragraph 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Read more about this.

What kind of luggage can be transported as cargo?

Larger bags are accepted into the cargo compartment of the aircraft than into the cabin. However, here too there are a number of restrictions for passengers that apply in 2018.

There is no legal requirement for free checked baggage for passengers. This has made it possible for many airlines to introduce so-called “baggage-free” fares, significantly reducing the cost of flights for business people and light travelers. These, for example, include “Light” tariffs from Utair or “Economy-Promo” tariffs from Ural Airlines.

For standard Economy class fares, which most carriers have, the free allowance is 1 piece weighing no more than 23 kg. But there are exceptions here too - so before flying you should always look at the information on the website of a specific company.

Important! Russian airlines do not take on board luggage weighing more than 50 kg. In most European countries, the maximum permissible weight is no more than 32 kg. There, even a porter at the airport will refuse to bear such a “heaviness,” citing the instructions of the trade union.

The largest Russian airlines and their free baggage allowances.

Somehow this year November is simply a good month for all sorts of transport tricks. Either Russian Railways suspended the sale of reserved seat tickets, or air carriers introduced new rules.
Actually, I wouldn’t bother with this, since we try not to fly with Russian airlines, but for December we have Moscow-Tivat-Moscow tickets. And we are flying "Victory".

Naturally, I immediately went to the airline’s website and began to look at how the baggage rules had changed. The first thing I saw:
On flights of Pobeda Airlines LLC There is no free baggage allowance, with the exception of carriage on a ticket that provides for the return of the carriage charge upon termination of the air carriage agreement. Tickets that provide for the return of carriage charges upon termination of the air carriage agreement provide for free baggage allowance weighing no more than 10 kilograms and dimensions no more than 203 centimeters in the sum of three dimensions.

To be honest, this threw me into a stupor, because on my non-refundable ticket it is written in blue and white that I have the right to my legal 10 kg of luggage. Naturally, I went to find out what the hell this was and what to do. In the process of finding out, they sent me this, but this information is not directly on the website, although it was definitely there back in October, because I saw a screenshot from the airline’s website. Why they removed it is completely incomprehensible; it only caused another wave of misunderstandings among passengers and another anger.
9.1
If you purchased a ticket before 09/29/2017 (including this date) for a flight operated after 09/30/2017 (including this date), you can carry free of charge no more than 10 kg of Checked Baggage with dimensions up to 203 cm in three dimensions and Hand Baggage provided for in paragraph 9.4 of these Rules.

Calling the Pobeda help desk is very expensive (more than 60 rubles per minute of conversation), so I decided to write. To my surprise, the answer came within half an hour (I didn’t expect it on a Sunday evening)
As a result of the correspondence, it turned out that we can take luggage for free as was originally included in the tariff, since the ticket was purchased according to the old rules. Just in case, I saved the letters and if anything happens, I will present them at the airport.

Now about hand luggage.
Carrying hand luggage on the Pobeda was the most painful area, because there were too many restrictions, but there was no weight limit; at least nowhere was it indicated how much a handbag or a man’s briefcase could weigh. With a reasonable approach, this could be used very well.
Since we have heavy photographic equipment with us, it was decided to pay extra. space for transportation in the cabin (10 kg). And again, it’s unclear how much luggage can be taken into the cabin according to the new rules, because from the personal account it follows that I can take 5 kg, my husband 5 +5.
Again, as a result of correspondence with Pobeda, we found out that you can take 5 kg for free and 10 kg paid, it’s just reflected very crookedly on the website.
At the same time now You can take both a backpack and a bag in hand luggage, the main thing is that everything fits into their microscopic standards for luggage sizes.

In general, all normal airlines did not take into account photo and video equipment, as well as laptops, in the weight of hand luggage, because it is impossible to check this equipment into luggage; according to current rules, all this must fit into 5 kg of hand luggage. For photographers, this is practically a death sentence, i.k. Often a body + lens set can already weigh more than 5 kg, not to mention tripods.

Of course, you can buy more expensive tickets with luggage and pay for additional hand luggage, but then the meaning of Pobeda tickets is completely lost, since its only advantage is cheap tickets. As soon as you start paying extra for everything, the cheapness disappears and it’s easier to buy tickets on some European airline.

*In addition to the established free baggage allowance, strollers weighing up to 12 kg are accepted. for one child. At the request of the passenger, a baby stroller can be accepted under the ramp when passengers board the aircraft and handed out under the ramp when passengers disembark from the aircraft.

In accordance with clause 135 of FAP-82, the following are allowed to be carried in the aircraft cabin:

  • a backpack or handbag, or a briefcase with things placed in a backpack, or a bag, or a briefcase, dimensions 40x30x20cm, maximum weight 3kg;

*these items are not presented for weighing, are not subject to registration, are not marked with tags and are transported in the aircraft cabin.

Liquids in hand luggage

Currently, at airports located on the territory of the Russian Federation, there are restrictions on the transportation of liquids, gels and aerosols in passenger hand luggage.

This restriction applies to: water and other drinks, soups, syrups; creams, lotions and oils; perfume; sprays; gels, including hair and shower gels; contents of cans, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants; pastes, including toothpastes; mixtures of liquid and solid substances; mascara; any other similar substances.

Passengers are only allowed to bring small quantities of the substances listed above on board the aircraft, but only if they are packaged in containers that do not exceed 100 ml. In this case, these containers must be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a volume of no more than 1 liter, and each passenger is allowed to carry only one such bag as hand luggage. These bags can be brought with you from home, but they must be equipped with a special “zipper” (see attached poster below).

In larger quantities than indicated, you are allowed to carry in hand luggage only:

  • baby food needed by the child during the flight;
  • medications necessary during the flight (however, when going through security, be prepared to be asked to prove the need for these items and substances during the flight);
  • Items that do not meet these requirements must be left at the airport in a storage room.

Transportation of animals

On charter and regular flights, Red Wings Airlines transports small pets in the passenger cabins of the aircraft, with a total weight of no more than 8 kg with a container whose dimensions should not exceed 115 cm in the sum of three parameters. The animal can only be transported in a carrier bag or container with air access. In this case, the animal must be able to stand up to its full height. During the flight, you must not open the container or bag and take out your pet.

Containers (cages) must meet the following requirements:

  • Rigid frame (soft carrying is not allowed!) with air access;
  • Strong lock;
  • The dimensions of the container must be sufficient for the animal to stand up to its full height and turn around;
  • The bottom of the container (cage) must be waterproof and covered with absorbent material;
  • There should be a border around the perimeter of the bottom to prevent spillage of absorbent material;
  • Bird cages should be covered with thick, light-proof fabric.

The passenger is obliged to inform the airline or an authorized agent about the transportation of an animal when making a reservation for transportation or purchasing a passenger ticket no later than 48 hours before the start of transportation.

The airline has the right to refuse transportation to a passenger with an animal if the transportation of the animal has not been booked and confirmed by the airline; this is necessary to ensure flight safety or prevent damage to the property of the airline or passengers. There is an additional charge for the service.

Make sure that you can provide all the necessary documents required by the legislation of the Russian Federation, international treaties and the legislation of the country to, from or through the territory of which the transportation is carried out.

The requirements of the Russian Federation regarding the transportation of animals can be found on the websites of the Office of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, the Office of Rosselkhoznadzor for Moscow, the Moscow and Tula regions,

as well as by contacting veterinary control points.

Payment for transportation of animals

Transportation of animals/birds is not included in the free baggage allowance and is paid for as non-standard baggage. Payment for animals/birds transported in one container is made for each animal/bird separately.

Only guide dogs accompanying their owners on the flight are carried free of charge.

Prohibited from being carried on an airplane

In order to ensure flight safety, the following are not accepted for transportation as baggage, hand luggage or in items carried by the passenger:

  • Firearms, hunting cartridges, explosives, fireworks, flares.
  • Oxidized materials and organic peroxides, bleaches and fiberglass repair kits.
  • Compressed gases, butane, oxygen, propane and scuba cylinders.
  • Poisons, insect repellents, herbicides, arsenic, cyanides, infectious substances, bacteria, viruses.
  • Caustic substances, mercury, acids, alkalis, battery fluid.
  • Flammable liquids and solid materials, gasoline for lighters and stoves, paint and all types of matches.
  • Radioactive materials.

Like many other domestic carriers, Pobeda Airlines sets its own rules for the carriage of baggage and hand luggage, so you need to familiarize yourself with them before the flight in order to avoid awkward situations when boarding.

According to the domestic air code for 2019, the cost of transporting passenger baggage is included in the ticket fare. Accordingly, the airline pays the same fee for each person and their luggage, whether it is one small suitcase or 10 huge bags. Therefore, many air carriers determine the exact dimensions and weight of hand luggage carried into the cabin in order to introduce additional charges for carrying items.

Pobeda Airlines, for example, included the carriage of hand luggage and larger luggage in the ticket price, establishing certain rules for them. Anything that exceeds the specified parameters in size and weight is paid separately according to the tariffs published on the airline’s website.

Rules for the carriage of free hand luggage by Pobeda Airlines

Paragraph 135 of FAP 82 “Pobeda” establishes that each passenger has the right to take into the aircraft cabin a limited list of things that must be in a bag or briefcase measuring 36 x 30 x 27 centimeters (weight is not limited):

  • A book, magazine or newspaper, or a folder for papers;
  • Cane, umbrella or bouquet;
  • Outerwear;
  • Mobile electronics: smartphone, laptop, photo or video camera;
  • Baby bassinet and meals for the duration of the flight;
  • If the passenger needs it, crutches, a wheelchair or a stretcher can be carried.

Paid hand luggage

If it is necessary to transport objects that are not included in the list of free hand luggage or are not suitable in size, you will have to pay additionally for them. The exact weight and dimensions of your luggage are very important! It is necessary that the sum of the three main dimensions of the bag does not exceed a maximum of 115 cm, and the weight of the luggage should not exceed 10 kg.

By paying for one additional seat on the airline’s website, you will spend 999 rubles. At the ticket office at a Russian airport you will be charged from one and a half to two thousand rubles, and at a foreign airport the tariff will be 25-35 euros.

The list of items allowed for transportation for an additional fee includes:

  • Backpacks;
  • Bags;
  • Food products;
  • Packages;
  • Boxes.

One passenger can only pay for two additional pieces of luggage in the cabin.

New rules! Now all things that do not correspond to the dimensions of 36 x 30 x 27 centimeters must be checked in as luggage. No more paid hand luggage!

Rules for transporting pets in the cabin

The airline allows you to take pets with you, but you will have to pay for this pleasure. When booking a ticket, be sure to notify the company that you intend to take your pet with you so that a carrier representative can reserve a seat for it.

Dogs and cats are only allowed to be taken in a carrier, the sum of the three main dimensions of which does not exceed the permitted 115 cm. Before the flight, it will be weighed with the pet inside - a weight of up to 8 kg is allowed. The tariff for transporting one animal in a container is 1999 rubles.

Carrying things in the luggage compartment

Each airline client can carry a bag or suitcase that weighs no more than 10 kg free of charge. In this case, the size of the item should not exceed 158 cm in the total sum of the three main dimensions.

If your luggage does not comply with the rules, you will have to pay extra for luggage over 10 kg. The maximum dimensions of luggage are 203 cm in total, and it must weigh up to 20 kg. The good news is that there is no limit on the number of paid luggage spaces per person.

New rules! From now on, free luggage can be carried if it is included in the fare. “Standard” tariff – luggage is not included (surcharge 499 rubles for 10 kg and 1499 rubles for 20 kg). Tariff "Plus" - you can carry 10 kg free of charge in the luggage compartment. Premium tariff – you can carry 10 kg + 20 kg in the luggage compartment free of charge.

It is also worth noting that when you pay for your seat on board online on the Pobeda company’s website, you can save money – fares at the airport are slightly higher. The site's tariff for one vacant seat up to 20 kg is 1,499 rubles, and at a Russian airport they will ask you for 3,000 rubles. Next: two seats, each of which is intended for a bag up to 20 kg, will cost 2,499 rubles when paying online and 5,000 rubles when paying at the airport ticket office in the Russian Federation.

Air transportation tariffs

    The minimum tariff is 499 rubles, taking into account the fees provided for in the tariff rules, and excluding the cost of additional services.

    Fares may vary depending on flight date and route.

    All fares of Pobeda Airlines LLC are special, subject to special conditions for the application of fares.

    The number of offers for each fare (including the minimum fare) on each flight is limited.

    The airline reserves the right to regulate the number of seats available for each fare.
