To be honest, Port Aventura left me indifferent. Either I have long since passed the optimal age for accepting all this tinsel, or I have seen too much of similar places in other countries. In general, I prefer a contemplative, quiet holiday, rather than a wild roller coaster race with whoops and squeals. But. to each their own, right? And Salou in this sense is hardly an ideal place. This town will not bore both the outdoor enthusiast and the person who prefers to drink beer through a straw so as not to overtrain his biceps with the weight of a half-liter bottle.
For me, the main attraction of Salou is the marvelous promenade, a pedestrian boulevard stretching along the central city beach. This boulevard is separated from the city by a road along which the cars of traveling tourists drive decorously. There are few buses - they taxi somewhere into the inner neighborhoods. Although, at the very beginning of the boulevard, in its southern part, there is a bus station. If you go up the street from this station deep into the city, you will end up at the Salou train station. From there you can take the train to Barsa. Use it to return to your hotel.
Yes, so here is the promenade. Nothing seems special. Palm trees that provide almost no shade. Neat lawns. Small fountains refreshing the air with life-giving damp dust. Benches on which you can sit, drink the same beer (the best is the Mexican “Coronita” - we call it “Corona” - with a slice of lemon inserted into the neck, cold, from the ice, a miracle, not a drink!), eat ice cream and just watch what is happening around (and absolutely nothing is happening around). It’s funny - you can go to the beach, fortunately it’s fifty meters away.
The beach is gorgeous - a gently sloping shore covered with sand. Plenty of sunbeds under awnings and all the European amenities that can be found on a municipal beach.
The embankment and beach stretch along the shore of a gently sloping bay. From the north, modern hotel buildings rise above the bay; on the right, the beach is limited by a jetty (yacht marina). But after it there is the beach again, until the next pier. And so - as far as the eye can see. Space and sun. True, there, in the south, is no longer Salou. But what's the difference? Costa Dorada. Golden shore. A heavenly place.
Salou is very family friendly. Nearby, a twenty-minute bus ride away, is ancient Tarragona, which is full of Roman ruins, including an amphitheater (cats live within its walls). And in the old Salou itself there are enough medieval buildings (I did not see ancient Roman ones, like in Tarragona). And relatively close to another famous place - the city of Reus, which is much (five times) larger than Salou, but smaller than Tarragona. The great Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi was born in Reus. Tourists are even shown the house in which he was born - a replica; the real house, alas, has not survived.
