The Stone City is an amazing rocky outcrop located on the territory of the Perm region, formed by nature in the form of large and small streets, squares and intersections, two-level transitions between monolithic houses.

The stone city is located at the top of the Rudyansky ridge of the Ural Mountains. Currently, the rocks are classified as a landscape geomorphological natural monument of the Perm region.

It is believed that once upon a time, millions of years ago, a river flowed on the territory of the city, year after year making its way among the impregnable stone monoliths. Over time, the mountains rose higher, and the river continued to make its way, building entire streets and intersections among the stone massifs, building labyrinths of roads. Centuries later, the river finished its work, and its waters weakened until they dried up completely.

The sun, wind and rainwater completed their work, and the Stone City appeared before us in all its glory. A city in which there are real straight streets, smooth, as if sharpened intersections, small cozy squares, and even two-level passages - bridges between stone houses.

There is a beautiful, but very sad legend about the origin of the city.

Once upon a time, a surprisingly beautiful city was built on this site. The fame of the city, its smart and hardworking inhabitants, its kind and fair king, spread over thousands of miles around. Two giant turtles protected the peace of the city from any misfortunes. But, to the great grief of the king, the beauty that the inhabitants of the city created with their labor could not be seen by the king’s only daughter. The girl was blind from birth, and not a single, even the most skilled doctor could cure her illness.

Then the good king begged and promised to give everything for his daughter’s recovery. A sorcerer came to the rescue and offered to cure the young girl. But the evil sorcerer deceived the king. The price that had to be paid for her daughter’s recovery turned out to be terrible - as soon as the girl began to see, the city with all its inhabitants turned to stone...

The stone remains are interesting not only for their straight-line streets and intersections. You can easily climb to the top, from where you have an excellent view of the entire city and the surrounding forest.

It doesn’t leave us feeling as if we are walking through a fabulous ancient stone labyrinth. The feeling of fabulousness is added by stone figures in the shape of huge turtles frozen thousands of years ago, and the unusual coloring of some remains that play beautifully in the sun’s rays, and even trees growing in a bizarre shape.

Perm Stone City is a place actively visited by tourists. A trip to the Stone Town will be interesting for both children and adults; the best time to visit is summer and autumn.

The route is designed for standard passenger cars. The exception is a small section, about one and a half kilometers, from the Usva - Shumikhinsky road to the rocks.

From Yekaterinburg we leave towards the city of Serov. Moving along the highway, passing the town of Verkhnyaya Tura, following the signs we go towards the town of Chusovoy, Perm Territory, focusing on the village of Promysla.

It is believed that a river used to flow on the site of stone houses and streets. The power of water has broken through such sculptures. As a result, it was as if a city was formed. It consists of quartz fine-grained sandstone and Lower Carboniferous. The Stone Town is located at an altitude of 526 m (the top of Rudyansky Spoy). The entire rock mass is strewn with various cracks that reach up to 12 meters in depth. The extraordinary nature of the Ural Mountains is the result of the action of natural elements. Water, glacier, wind, change of geological eras - all this contributed to the creation of a unique landscape. If you climb to the top of the Stone City, you can observe the beauty of the Ural taiga.

The entire stone complex is divided into the Big City and the Small City. The distance between them is about 200-300 meters. It is difficult to find the Small Town; there is only an inconspicuous path that leads to it. It consists of four remains, which are also amazingly beautiful. How to get to this amazing place

The stone city is located approximately 200 kilometers from Perm. Getting here is very easy. First you need to get on the Perm-Kizel highway and move to the village of Usva. Then you only have to drive a short distance before the sign “Stone Town” appears. It is installed near the turn to the Yubileiny village. The main thing is not to take the necessary turn onto the dirt road. As we have already said, driving a car further will be problematic. Therefore, you need to walk the rest of the way (1 km). There is a special parking lot for cars. Of course, you can also use public transport to get to Stone Town. But this way is not very convenient to get to the desired road, since all buses/trains go to the village of Usva. You will have to change trains in Chusovoy and then walk all the way to Yubileiny - first about a kilometer from Usva along the road towards Kizel, then 5 kilometers to Yubileiny. The only minibus that goes to the village leaves every day at about 14.00. But you will have to go back on your own or hitch a ride, since the necessary transport runs only in the morning.

Origin of Stone Town

The legend, of course, is beautiful, but scientists believe that the so-called streets of the Stone City were formed due to the fact that a river flowed here millions of years ago. It was she who broke through the streets and arches.

The stone city is located at the top of the Rudyansky Spoy ridge (526 m). The rocks are composed of fine-grained Lower Carboniferous quartz sandstone. The rock massif is cut through by numerous deep cracks (up to 8-12 meters). Water, wind, glacier and geological epochs have worked on the appearance of the Ural Mountains, creating an extraordinary complex.

Big and Small cities

The settlement is divided into Big and Small towns. Maly Kamenny Town is located 200-300 meters east of Bolshoy. It can be quite difficult to find, since the path to it is not very obvious. It consists of only four remnants, which are actually no less interesting than their older brothers, especially Leaky Stone and Proschelok.

In 2008, Stone Town received the status of a landscape natural monument of the Perm Territory.

The end of August and the beginning of autumn is a time of influx of large numbers of tourists. The Stone Town is especially beautiful in autumn, during a riot of bright colors.

The city is no less beautiful in winter, when snow caps hang from the stones, and the trees growing right on the tops of the stones are covered in snow.

You can have a great time in Stone Town at any time of the year. You can stay here overnight, pitching a tent at the foot of the cliffs. But remember that there are no sources of water in Stone Town, so you need to stock up on it in advance.

How to get to Stone Town

Stone Town is located approximately 200 kilometers from Perm. Getting to Stone Town is quite simple: by private car along the Perm - Kizel highway you need to get to the village of Usva. Further along the road towards the same Kizel. Soon there will be a turn to the right (to the Yubileiny village) with a sign “Stone City”, and although the sign says 9 kilometers, in fact there are 5 kilometers there. But you need to be careful not to miss the right turn, since this is a turn onto a dirt road. You can't get there by car anymore. You will see a road blocked by a metal pipe and a sign indicating that you are approaching the Stone City natural complex. Usually the cars are left here, on this patch, and they walk along the path for about 1 kilometer. There are many small narrow paths here, but they all lead to one place - to the Stone Town.

If you get there by bus, then you need a bus from Perm - Kizel, or Perm - Gubakha, go to the above-mentioned village of Usva. You can also get to Usva by train, but it is inconvenient because you will need to change trains in Chusovoy.

From Usva, either walk about a kilometer along the highway to Kizel, then 5 kilometers towards the village of Yubileiny before turning to Kamenny Gorod, or choose the time so as to get to the desired dirt road on the Usva - Yubileiny minibus, which runs once a day around 14 hours. But you will still have to get back from Stone Town either on foot or by hitchhiking, since this minibus goes back from Yubileiny to Usva early in the morning.

There are gates with arches, a large central square, spacious avenues and narrow alleys, and there are also dead ends. The Devil's Settlement is famous for its unusually shaped rock outcrops. Scientists suggest that such bizarre forms appeared under the influence of fast waters of a mountain river that flowed here several million years ago. And then the mountains rose higher, forming the Rudyansky Spoy ridge, and the river disappeared.

The rocks are composed of fine-grained quartz sandstone. The rock massif is cut through by numerous deep cracks (up to 8-12 meters). The width of the cracks is from 1 to 8 meters. Thanks to this, the outlines of the rocks and the cracks in them are very reminiscent of the houses and streets of an old, abandoned city.

The giant stone reserve is divided into Big AndSmall town . It has its own streets (and even an avenue - the largest crack between the rocks with sheer walls 8 meters high). In the Big City there are two highest outcrops, called, due to their resemblance to animals in shape, Big AndSmall Turtles .

Stone Town is popular with rock climbers - competitions are held here annually between Emergency Situations Ministry employees and local speleologists. The number of tourists visiting this amazing monument is constantly growing - and there is a simple explanation for this, hidden in the incredible beauty and uniqueness of this amazing place.

At any time of the year you can come to Stone Town and spend the night in a tent. The most significant inconvenience is the complete lack of water. You need to take it with you.

How to get there

By car:

About 200 km: along the Perm-Kizel highway past the village of Usva for about another 1 km, then turn to the village of Yubileiny and another 5 km before turning right at the sign “Stone City”. By public transport:

You can get to the turn to Chertovo Gorodishche by minibus from Usva to the village. Yubileiny, it runs once a day at approximately 14.00. But you still have to walk back, or hitch a ride to Usva. Because this minibus returns early in the morning.
