The smallest city in the Yaroslavl region and one of the smallest in Russia, the administrative center of the municipal district. It is located at the confluence of the Ucha and Obnora rivers. The nearest cities are Danilov (38 km) and Bui of the Kostroma region (60 km). The population of the city is just over 5,000 people (as of 2017).
History of Lyubim
The first mention of the city dates back to the time of Ivan the Terrible. According to legend, he loved to hunt in the local forests rich in game and ordered to build a fortress here, which would protect the locals from the raids of the Kazan Tatars. According to the main version, the city got its name thanks to the male name Lyubim, which was very common in Russia in the 16th century.
The reform of the government of Elena Glinskaya, whose goal was to strengthen trade and the country's defense, made Lyubim one of the hundred most significant cities in Russia. Gradually the city turned into an important center of internal trade.
In 1777, Lyubim was granted the status of a city, although at that time there were no pavements or street lighting in it. The main occupations of the inhabitants were agriculture, logging and cheese making. Less than a year later, the coat of arms of the city was approved.
By the beginning of the 19th century, there were only six stone houses in Lyubim, the population was about 2,000 people. Active population growth was observed in the second half of the 20th century, but at the moment this figure is steadily declining. Agricultural enterprises, a butter and cheese factory, a bakery and a timber processing plant operate in the city.

Love is a small provincial town, which is what makes it interesting. The central part of the city has a radial-circular building, which was typical for medieval Russian cities. So far, preserved Earthworks and a moat - defensive structures of the period of the foundation of the city.
Works in the city local history museum, where you can get to know Lyubim better. The layout of an ancient fortress, from which the history of the settlement once began, attracts attention here. Much attention is paid to the military exploits of the natives of the beloved land. There is also a diorama of the modern city, which is constantly updated taking into account changes in the real appearance of Lyubim.
Love's Heart - central square. Here are preserved malls built to replace wooden ones at the end of the 18th century. Two centuries ago, there was a brisk trade here every week and even annual fairs were held, and today the rows are mostly empty, since there are few inhabitants in the city, and tourists are not in a hurry to come here.
Another interesting object is located on the trading square - Chapel of Alexander Nevsky. It was built at the end of the 19th century, according to the official version, in memory of the innocently murdered Emperor Alexander II. An elegant building with a tent and a dome is a functioning temple, services are held here.
One of the most visited places by citizens and tourists - City Park. This is a landscape monument where you can walk in the shade of trees, sit on a bench and look at huge boulder, which marks the place where the city was founded. From here you can go to the bank of Obnora, where there is a beautiful gazebo, as well as a pedestrian bridge across the river, along which you can easily get to another part of the city.
In the very center of the city, on the territory of the former Kremlin, stands, built at the expense of parishioners at the end of the 18th century and replacing older wooden churches. It is notable for its unusually shaped windows. Near the cathedral there is a high bell tower with a beautiful view of the surroundings. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is considered one of the first stone structures in the city. Currently, restoration work is underway in the cathedral.
On the banks of the Obnora, at the end of the 18th century, a Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Initially, it was five-domed, next to it there was a bell tower (it has not survived to this day). In Soviet times, the temple was badly damaged, at present it has been handed over to believers, services are held there.
Very handsome Trinity temple complex on the moat of the parish. One of the oldest stone churches in Lyubim - Troitskaya, built in 1739, is badly damaged. Her age, , was closed in Soviet times, the archive was located there, and is now in an abandoned state. A happier fate for the one standing next door Tikhvin Church built in the 19th century. She suffered the least from time and people, not so long ago she was returned to believers and now her restoration is underway.
Of the architectural monuments of Lyubim, one can single out Vvedensky Church, which was originally built as part of the Afanasievskaya male hermitage in Zauchye, and later became an independent temple. During its history, it was closed several times, but in Soviet times it escaped a similar fate, so it has been well preserved.
Approximately thirty kilometers from Lyubim, on the shores of Surskoye Lake, stands, founded in 1529. In the last century, it was almost completely destroyed, but at the beginning of the 21st century it was handed over to believers and is being actively restored. From the relics here you can see the well of St. Gennady, the founder of the monastery, and his relics. You can get from Lyubim to the monastery along a forest road.
Another noteworthy place on Lyubimskaya land is an old merchant's Zakobyakino village, located thirty kilometers south of the city. Well-preserved two-story merchant houses and shops, a beautiful stone functioning temple, as well as the building of the former zemstvo hospital, which is over a hundred years old, are perfectly preserved here.
Climate
Lyubim is located in the temperate continental climate zone, which is characterized by frosty and snowy winters, warm and rainy summers, as well as a pronounced expression of all seasons of the year. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of around -12°C and occasional frosts down to -30°C. Winds are predominantly southerly and southwesterly.
Warm weather sets in Lyubim in May and lasts until mid-September. The warmest month is July with an average temperature around +18°C and an average daily temperature around +25°C. The maximum amount of precipitation is observed in June and August, so it is better to plan a trip to Lyubim in July, when it is warm and not very damp.

The easiest way to get from Moscow to Lyubim is by private car. Distance in a straight line - about 350 km, travel time - about six hours. First you need to go along the federal highway M8 Kholmogory to Yaroslavl, then along the local road to Lyubim. The road surface is of good quality almost throughout the entire route.
Bus service connects Lyubim only with Yaroslavl, the distance is just over 100 kilometers, the travel time is about three hours. According to the schedule, there are six flights per day (at the end of 2017).
You can also get to Lyubim by rail. The only train from Danilov to Bui and back stops here. He goes twice a day, morning and evening.
