Geography of Italy. Why is Italy shaped like a boot? What is the name of a country shaped like a boot?

Thanks to its original outline, Italy is the most recognizable country on the geographical map. Italy is located on the Apennine Peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water. The boot-shaped mainland points west towards the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

The capital of Italy, Rome, is the largest city with a population of 2.5 million people. In total, the country is home to 58 million people. The total area of the country, including the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, occupies 301,230 square meters. km.

Within Italy there are also the tiny states of San Marino and Vatican City, to visit which you don’t even need a visa.

The total length of land borders is 1932 kilometers. The coastline stretches for 8 thousand kilometers. Italy borders Austria (430 km), France (488 km), Slovenia (232 km) and Switzerland (740 km). In addition, the territory of the country is surrounded by the states of the Vatican (border 3.2 km) and San Marino (border 39 km). The boundary of territorial waters runs 12 nautical miles from the coast. Continental shelf at a depth of 200 meters. Located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy has maritime borders with the Balkan countries - Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece. There are dozens of small islands scattered off the coast of Italy, but only the two largest islands - Sicily and Sardinia - are densely populated.

The country belongs to the coasts of four seas. Along the east coast lies the Adriatic Sea, on the other side of which lies Croatia. Somewhat further south is the Ionian Sea, separating Italy from Greece. Between the western coast of mainland Italy and the islands - Italian Sardinia and French Corsica - stretches the Tyrrhenian Sea. The waters of the Ligurian Sea wash the western coast of northern Italy and part of the French border. The landscape of the Italian coast is heterogeneous: for example, the Amalfi coast in the province of Campania is mostly rocky, while the shores of the island of Sardinia are famous for their golden, sandy beaches.

In Italy there are two large chains of mountains: the Alps and the Apennines, which make up the mainland of the country. The ridge of the peninsula, stretching from north to south for 1,500 kilometers, is formed by the Apennine chain. The lowest point of Italy is at the level of the Mediterranean Sea. The highest point is Mont Blanc de Courmayeur. This is the second peak of Mont Blanc, its height is 4748 meters.

On the border with France are the Western Alps, the Central Alps bordering Austria, and the Eastern Alps bordering Switzerland. A separate part of the Alps are the Dolomites, located in the regions of South Tyrol, Trentino and Belluno. The height of mountain peaks in the Italian Alps reaches almost 5 thousand meters above sea level. Many tourists come here for skiing. According to the geography of Italy, it owns part of the Matterhorn, famous among skiers.

In the vicinity of Naples is Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the European mainland. On the island of Sicily is located one of the largest volcanoes in the world - Etna.

The Apennine Peninsula is crossed by three large rivers. The Po River begins in the Western Alps and continues through a fertile green valley leading to the Adriatic Sea. The Arno River originates in the Northern and Central Apennines and flows towards Florence, emptying into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Tiber flows from the Apennine Mountains south through Rome and also flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Italy (Italian Italia ), Italian Republic(Italian Repubblica Italiana ) - a state in southern Europe, in the Mediterranean. Occupies the Apennine Peninsula, the Padana Plain, the southern slopes of the Alps, the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, etc. On land, Italy borders France to the northwest, Switzerland and Austria to the north, and Slovenia to the northeast.

On the territory of Italy there are 2 mini-states: the Vatican City (Stato della Città del Vaticano) and the Republic of San Marino (Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino).

Thanks to its original contour Italy- the most recognizable country on a geographical map -

"the most recognizable boot "!

Name Italy comes from the word " italia", meaning "land of the calf", perhaps because the bull was a symbol of the tribes of Southern Italy. Italy is the most densely populated country in Europe. Its population, with a relatively small territory (approximately equal to the area of Arizona), numbers more than 58 million people.

The country belongs to the coasts of 5 seas: Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Mediterranean, Ionian and Adriatic. Italy is home to two large mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. In the vicinity of Naples is Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the European mainland. The boot-shaped mainland points west towards the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. On the island of Sicily is located one of the largest volcanoes in the world - Etna.

Welcome to Italy - Benvenuti!

Italy has more masterpieces of art per square kilometer than any other country in the world. They say that Italy- This is a real open-air museum. At every step you will see a huge number of sculptures and monuments; it is impossible not to stop every minute to admire the next work of art. According to UNESCO, Italy houses almost half of the world's cultural and historical heritage. Italy is a country with a very rich history, which 2 thousand years ago was the center of the most powerful Ancient Roman Empire in the world. The Latin language spoken by the ancient Romans became the basis not only of the Italian language, but also of Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Romanian.

Italy so many-sided that the impression of it constantly changes as you move from one province to another, and then from city to city, from city to town. The very word “Italy” perhaps has a special magic and has fascinated us since childhood. And as soon as we learn about the existence of Italy, the history and culture of which are most closely and harmoniously intertwined with the heritage of the whole world, then an irresistible desire arises at least once in our lives to see this beautiful, amazing and unique country in its charm, which managed to inspire creativity countless generations of humanity.

Country of tourism, where sunny beaches are washed by the waves of the warm sea, and the mountains of Italy are world famous for their ski slopes... Large football clubs with crowds of tiffozzi fans... Dozens of varieties of coffee, famous Italian cars, famous fashion houses. Italy is associated with coffee, fashion, Ferrari, Monica Bellucci... Here is the spirit of the Roman Empire, settled on the ruins of the Coliseum, and the ringing of numerous temples... In this country, bars filled with young people, modern technologies, family businesses, August holidays for everyone countries, pizza, wine, tourists, feasts, numerous relatives, discos and pride in Italian style and quality goods " Made in Italy»!...

Italy- this is a fairy tale country. Center for international tourism of world significance.

Arriving here, you can feel that time has stopped or turned back... What is the dilapidated Coliseum, which absorbed the blood of many gladiators into its walls, or beautiful and majestic Vatican, called a state within a state, a small town Pisa with the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, an "open-air museum" city of contrasts Florence(founded in 59 AD as a small Roman settlement) or romantic Venice, a city on the water (“the pearl of the Adriatic”, where even the stones smell of the sea), famous throughout the world for its canals and bridges. Magical Venice will immerse you in the world of romance and love, wonderful views and gondoliers singing opera arias, and no less beautiful medieval architecture will tell unforgettable stories. This an ideal city for lovers and romantics!

"Lake of Dreams" - Lake Garda - the largest lake in Italy, located in 3 picturesque regions: Trentino, Veneto and Lombardy. Located 30 km from Verona, 90 km from Bergamo and 130 km from Venice. This beautiful place combines the solar energy of the southern seas and the enveloping melancholy of the north. There is everything for tourists here: one of the largest and most famous Italian holiday parks, Gardaland, thermal parks, a water park, sandy beaches, fishing, diving, pubs, discos, wineries.

The most beautiful coastal cities in Italy: Camogli, Manarola, Polignano a Mare, Portofino, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Sorrento, Cefalu.

A insular Italy- this is the crown of perfection.
Island Sicily(the largest region by area among the regions of Italy) with luxurious estates and olive groves spread over almost the entire island. The largest volcano in Europe is located on Mt. Etna on the island of Sicily. Sicily is an island of contrasts, where the splendor of the royal court, the bustle of big cities and the stinginess of peasant life and rustic simplicity coexist. And this is also reflected in Sicilian cuisine. Thanks to the warm and humid climate, the Sicilian soil is very fertile and rich in products that are unique in their kind. For example, the famous cherry tomatoes come from Sicily. On the island (and throughout Italy) they are called after the place where they appeared “pachino” (the town of Pachino). Blood oranges (tarocchi) are another Sicilian exclusive. They have red, “bloody” flesh and the highest content of vitamin C. It is believed that the best oranges in Europe are Sicilian. The island is also famous for nectarines, cactus fruits (fichi d'india) and peaches, as well as medlar. Sicily is famous throughout the world for its olive oil. In ancient times people came for it even from Greece. The most popular first dish in Sicily is pasta alla Norma, named after the famous work of the Italian composer Bellini. The salt used here is exclusively sea salt. It is produced in mills that can be found throughout the island (the most famous are located near Trapani and are worth a visit). Seafood can be found everywhere in Sicily. People even come from Japan for local tuna, since here it is fattier and juicier than ocean tuna, even if it is grown on special farms. And the list of desserts in Sicily is almost longer than the list of Italian pastas!

The wonderful and unique aroma of sea air, you clearly feel free in it, a unique sunset and the whisper of the gentle sea - this is, of course, Sardinia. The island of Sardinia will delight you with its pristine nature, golden beaches and gentle sea. This island has not lost its pristine beauty, the rarest representatives of flora and fauna have been preserved on it, truly this is the most wonderful of the islands of Italy!

One of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean - Ischia. For centuries, the island has been and remains a paradise for travelers seeking tranquility and the opportunity to restore their health. Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples (in the Tyrrhenian Sea, 40 km from Naples and 7 km from the continent). You definitely need to visit there: for excursion and educational purposes, for health purposes (the most famous thermal parks of Ischia: “Gardens of Eden”, “Gardens of Poseidon”, “Negombo”), and, of course, for gastronomic purposes (you should try the “fragrant Iskitan style rabbit", seafood dishes, desserts).

The reserve is considered the pearl of the Ligurian coast Cinque Terre - these are 5 Italian villages, which are nestled as colorful spots on the shores of the azure sea in small bays. Entry here by private vehicle is strictly prohibited - only harmless small trains, boats and environmentally friendly buses operate here.

Calabria(Italian Calabria, sic. Calabbria, Calavria, lat. Brut(t)ium, Calabria) is an administrative region in southern Italy, separated by the beautiful Strait of Messina from Sicily. The region is divided into 5 provinces: three historical (Reggio Calabria, Cosenza and Catanzaro) and two modern (Crotone and Vibo Valentia). Reggio Calabria is called “the toe city of the Italian boot,” and the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio called the Promenade in the city of Reggio Calabria “the most beautiful kilometer of Italy.” Reggio Calabria has 2 unique features - Fata Morgana and bergamot.

Chianalea is the most picturesque quarter of Scilla (Scylla), it is unique in its own way and is called the Venice of the South.

Going to Rome, you will plunge into the world of ancient culture and the Catholic faith. They loved Rome, they wrote about Rome, they came to Rome for inspiration... Previously, if you had not been to Rome, you were not an accepted person in society. A charming open-air museum, ancient and mysterious Rome tops the list of the most popular (in terms of photography) Italian cities. Time has no power over Rome. It remains cutting-edge in any century. Beautiful architecture, wonderful fountains, fashionable ready-to-wear boutiques, many cozy small restaurants and no less cozy expensive restaurants. The energy here is vibrant and the city, surrounded by monumental ruins, is still vibrant. In addition to foreign celebrities, many Russian writers, artists and composers visited Rome. The list is long - Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, Nekrasov, Bryulov (both brothers), Gogol (lived for 14 years), Volkonsky... and many, many others.

Dante was born in Italy and Saint Peter is buried here.

The most skilled fashion designers live in Italy and make the most expensive cars.

Report on a trip in a rented car in Italy. Rome, Florence, Venice, Salerno, San Marino and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Preface

Italy is a country that we (me and my husband) visited for the first time 10 years ago. Then there were almost all the countries of Europe, both Eastern and Western, as well as Southeast Asia and China. We even flew to Indonesia, testing the waves in Kuta in Bali.

And what? It’s the only country in the shape of a boot that attracts and forces you to come back here again. Italy has completely won our hearts, and now I’ll tell you why.

Italy, "Bella poesia"!

The first few times we traveled to major tourist cities, we used the services of a travel agency. Once, when we were deceived and the hotel room we had paid for turned out to be a myth, we decided that we would no longer contact “travel sellers.”

On our last trip, it was decided to rent a car and follow the approved route to go where and when we saw fit. Freedom!

Airport and train

From our Yekaterinburg, flying to almost any point in Europe takes a long time and requires a transfer. Many airlines have stopped flying in the last 3-4 years.

We love to fly to Rome, to Fiumicino (Italian: Fiumicino). This is a very convenient and passenger-friendly airport. Directly from Fiumicino you can take the Aeroexpress to the city center or to the central station of Rome - Roma Termini. The train runs every 15 minutes and the journey to Termini takes about half an hour. The cost of a ticket is from 8 to 14 euros (500-1000 rubles), while for a transfer/taxi you will have to pay from 50 euros (3500 rubles).

Important! Tickets can be purchased at the box office or at the terminal on the platform. In no case do I advise you to ride as a “hare”, the fines are serious:

  • 50 euros if you pay the controller immediately.
  • 100 euros if paid within 15 days.
  • 200 euros if paid within 15-60 days.

So, we definitely decided to fly to Rome, stay for a couple of days somewhere in one of our favorite areas, and then rent a car and go on a trip.

The Eternal City, it is amazing! How many times have we wandered through the narrow streets, how many times have our mouths involuntarily opened at the beauty that literally exists in everything that surrounds every tourist. Must-sees: the Pantheon, the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, all the main squares with their fountains and secret streets.

It’s better to arrive at St. Peter’s Cathedral around 7 am - there won’t be a long queue. We recommend taking an audio guide and slowly wandering around this mastodon. For daredevils, there is a climb to the Dome of the Cathedral - it’s something incredible!

Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica

Typically, in the capital of the Italian Republic, we stayed in the center, where there are many famous attractions, restaurants and trattorias. My passion also “lives” there - Italian shopping.

These are the areas:

  • Square of Spain (Piazza Spania) with a staircase always full of people and the Barcaccia fountain (translated into Russian as “boat”).
  • Fontana di Trevi, near which crowds of tourists take pictures and throw coins at it all day long. Here reigns the eternal hum of human voices, woven from many languages and dialects.

If you face the fountain, to the left of it is our favorite "gelateria" with the best ice cream, on the main shopping street Via del Corso, which stretches a long distance from Piazza Venezia to Piazza del Popolo.

If you stay in these areas, you can walk to the nearby areas with the Colosseum and Pantheon, as well as walk to the Vatican (a leisurely 20-30 minute walk across the Tiber).

Beautiful Rome

When it's hot in Rome, fountains are everywhere. Of all (yes, of all), you can drink water! Usually tourists even take a water container with them.

Drinking fountains

This time we stopped near Termini Station so that in the morning we could take a car nearby and leave the city.

Itinerary in Italy

  • Florence (274 km).
  • Verona (231 km).
  • Venice (121 km).
  • San Marino (278 km).
  • Alberobello (626 km).
  • Amantea (285 km).
  • Salerno (317 km).
  • Rome (268 km).

Map of our route

We decided to spend the night near San Marino, a couple of nights in Alberobello, then at sea in Amantea and near Salerno. We will spend the night at the agrotourismo hotel.

All hotels were booked through Booking.com. This is convenient: travelers who have actually visited hotels and paid for them leave reviews there. We have been using this resource for many years, there have been no failures or problems. On this site you can also take advantage of the 10% Genius Traveler discount on those hotels that offer such a discount.

Rent a car in Italy

The car had to be picked up at the Termini central station, very close to the hotel. We arrived in the morning after an excellent breakfast and Roman coffee at the hotel. At the central station there are several windows of companies providing car rentals.

The most famous, they are also the most expensive:

  • Europcar;
  • Hertz;
  • Avis.

Based on reviews and prices, we chose a local Italian company, Maggiore. Here is the link to the official website.

What was needed to register the lease?

  • International passport.
  • Driver's license (ours is Russian). Nobody even asked a question about international rights. The driver must be over 21 years old and have a driving experience of more than 3 years.
  • Bank card. We had a Raiffeisen Bank card, euro, debit. In addition to paying the rent itself, the amount of 700 euros was frozen on the card. It is returned when the car is returned safe and sound and with a full tank of fuel.
  • A completed contract with a diagram of the car and a note about the place and time of its return.

We got a Mercedes C class, brand new and clean. The car cost about 4,600 rubles per day. It turned out to be much cheaper, because we booked it three months in advance from Russia.

Advice. Before you joyfully drive towards adventure, you need to carefully inspect the car. If you notice any dents/chips/cracks on the case, be sure to indicate these places in the contract and sign everything in the presence of a company employee.

Fuel in Italy, as well as throughout Europe, is expensive. But 1 euro 50 cents (about 110 rubles per liter) on excellent roads seemed to us a completely acceptable price. Highways with good lighting and surfaces, dividing curbs with oncoming traffic, signs and diagrams - everything is as it should be on the roads.

Navigator - regular Google Maps and Maps.me on a smartphone. We used it only in the cities themselves, since it was not required on the autobahn - everything is very clearly explained through signs.

The road surface is excellent

Rental cars have a paper dial on the windshield. When a car is parked in a paid parking lot in cities, the time is indicated so that a police officer can see it and understand whether it has passed. If the time runs out and the car is still parked, you will receive a fine for the wiper.

The tunnels in Italy are simply gorgeous

We left Rome quickly, even ourselves were surprised at how simple everything turned out to be. It is very important that drivers do not behave aggressively on the road. Everyone is relaxed and peaceful. We drove about 270 km to Florence in one breath. We stopped at a typical roadside cafe, of which there are a huge number. Clean, cozy, tasty, excellent coffee, clean toilets.

Florence is beautiful, but since we had already been here, we walked around the center, sat in a restaurant on the main square with a carousel and moved on.

Verona

We decided to stop by Verona for just a few minutes - we promised to bring a souvenir from Juliet to our niece. This is the only city in which we received a fine. The police officer politely charged us 41 euros (about 2,800 rubles) for overdue parking. The reason is simple - we just got lost in the city and were delayed for literally 10 minutes.

Fine

On this section of the road you need to pay for the toll, everything is clear and convenient. We drove into one of the driveways, inserted a bill (20 euros) into the terminal, and the machine gave out change down to the cents. It turned out to be 8 euros (about 480 rubles) - we took the receipt, the barrier opened, and we were good to go.

Road toll terminal

We arrived in Venice, or rather in the parking lot in front of Venice, in the early evening. It was cloudy, but warm. The air is completely different here. This city is truly for romantics and lovers. An amazing place, unlike any other!

San Marino

Before San Marino, after about two hours of excellent road, we arrived at the hotel. We spent the night at Agriturismo al Colle, in the town of Bertinoro. The price for a double room with breakfast was 60 euros (about 4,500 rubles). The location is luxurious, an alley of tall thujas leads to the hotel, and in front of the building there is an excellent swimming pool, which was very useful. The room is decorated with wood, there is a wonderful restaurant and all the amenities.

In the morning we went to San Marino. When approaching the city-state, it seemed that all the main places were on a high mountain. In these places the infrastructure is remembered as more luxurious than in Italy itself. Even at the foot, a policeman shows all drivers that entry is only possible to the parking lot in the rock. We drove in, parked, there were plenty of places. At the top we bought tickets for the funicular and took a ride to another level.

Funicular tickets

View from the ski lift

We had some great shopping here and a great restaurant with an amazing view.

Fairytale city, toy trulli houses. We have never been to Alberobello, we only read rave reviews from travelers. There are rules here, something to be surprised about, some other world.

Once again we were convinced that Italy is a different and unpredictable country with its fabulous architecture and beauty preserved for posterity.

We spent the night at the Trulli e Puglia Resort. The thick walls of the trullo always have a normal climate, cool in hot weather, warm in cold weather. They paid 5,700 rubles for the room.

Beach holidays in Italy

In the morning we set out for the town of Amantea, Calabria region. This is the very “toe” of the Italian boot. Although we read reviews that in the south of Italy everything is much poorer and simpler, in reality we did not notice this. The roads are still excellent, the restaurants and trattorias are clean, the food is excellent.

There are many "ristoranti di pesce" (fish restaurants) along the coast. I will remember them until our next trip. For seafood lovers, this area of Italy is paradise! By the way, dinner for two with excellent local wine and a huge amount of fresh seafood cost us 30-50 euros.

Hotel for a week - Grand Hotel La Tonnara. The price with a discount from Booking and included breakfast (luxurious) for six nights was 26,000 rubles. The hotel is located five meters from the sea, there is an excellent swimming pool and restaurant. The beach is clean, there are few people. A week of relaxation on the shore of the azure transparent sea passed quickly. Clean water, easy access to the water - everything was fabulous.

View from the room to the beach

We understood one thing for sure: prices in the South of Italy are lower than in the North - that’s it. In this area of Italy you need to be by car - that's two things. That's when your vacation will be comfortable.

One interesting thing: the electrical outlets here were special, and we had to buy this adapter:

Salerno

The vacation was coming to an end. Ahead towards Naples there is the town of Salerno. We stayed at the Casale Degli Ulivi Prestige, located in the nearby town of Altavilla Silentina. There is a swimming pool, a fig garden and a wonderful breakfast, which owner Luciana serves on the terrace. A day in a comfortable room with breakfast cost 3,500 rubles.

There are farms in the area that produce Buffalo mozzarella from buffalo milk. Those interested can watch the production, try and buy the varieties they like.

Driving along the local roads, settlements are visible on the tops of the hills (quite high). The houses seem to be glued to the slopes, unusual and beautiful.

Even in the smallest village there is always a football field with good coverage.

Paetum

We also visited Paestum, an ancient Greek city in Italy. Its exact founding date is unknown; it is assumed that it happened around the 7th century. BC. Next to the ruins is the Archaeological Museum - a very interesting exhibition in modern exhibition halls.

The museum is open from 8:30 to 19:30, 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 8:30 to 13:40. Ticket price (museum + archaeological area) - 9 euros (about 600 rubles). There is an interesting souvenir shop at the museum. Many pictures-symbols of the museum, coins, decorations and so on.

Rome again

End of the journey. The rented car was returned without incident, although the tank was empty, but we were tired and did not want to refuel. We agreed with the employee, paying him 30 euros. The amount frozen on the card was returned only two weeks later. It was kind of nerve-wracking to wait, after all, it was a lot of money.

We are waiting for a new trip. It will definitely come with car rental. We plan to explore the North-West of Italy, Liguria and Piedmont.

The eternal city, it really is eternal!

One of my favorite countries, because the cuisine there is simply amazing, and you can buy good, high-quality boots or clothes. Well, if you ask any schoolchild: “Which country looks like a boot?”, then almost everyone will say that, after all, this country really, if you look at the map, is very similar to a boot. So let's solve this mystery together: why does it look like a boot?!

Some facts about Italy

Most people know that Italy is called the “shoe country”. After all, they make the best boots in the world, and any other shoes for that matter. So it coincided that the country also looks like boots and produces them, which has become famous throughout the world. And it’s worth noting that most of the famous Italian designers got rich from selling shoes and clothing in Russia.

Italy itself is located on the Apennine Peninsula, whose outlines are very similar in appearance to boots.

Well, now let's return to the main question: “Why does Italy look like a boot?”

Well, of course, you can answer this question in such a way that the bizarre outline of this country is a creation of nature and this will be true. After all, if you look closely, there are not so few places on our planet that outwardly resemble various objects or something else.

As we all know from the school geography course, at first there was a single continent, Gondwana (Africa, Antarctica, as well). But many millions of years passed and, due to a sharp movement to the north, it united with the North American continent into a huge protocontinent called Pangea. But when the Earth was in the Jurassic period, Pangea split and Gondwana again became a separate continent. Well, thirty million years later, Gondwana began to break up into separate continents. Thus, over time, the bizarre outlines of Italy took shape, which began to resemble a boot. Yes, but if you look closely, then
