Southern coast and resorts of Bulgaria. Resorts on the southern coast of Bulgaria Southern Bulgaria

The Bulgarian coast is the eastern border of the country and stretches along the Black Sea coastline for more than 400 km. Cape Emine divides the territory of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast into two components: northern and southern.

The northern part attracts the attention of tourists who prefer active leisure, who are interested in rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing or extreme rafting on wild mountain rivers, with its steep cliffs and rocky capes, which reach about 60 m in height. The southern part of the coast is flat and famous for its wide golden beaches.

The geographical orientation of the beaches to the east, towards the rising sun, makes it possible for tourists and travelers to sunbathe in the morning. A characteristic feature of the beaches is a slight fluctuation in the water level during the ebb and flow of the tides, moderately salty water compared to the Mediterranean Sea. The shallow depth of the beaches here allows families with children and elderly people to have a great rest. The mild climate ensures a long beach season, which lasts from May to October.

The Black Sea coast of Bulgaria is conventionally divided into northern and southern. Between Varna (the largest city on the northern coast) and Burgas (on the southern coast) there are only about 130 kilometers, and the landscape of the coasts is radically different.

The Balkan Mountains, or Stara Planina as the Bulgarians call them, stretch across the entire country. It is believed that the border between the northern and southern coasts runs along Cape Emine, the easternmost point of this mountain range.

Northern coast of Bulgaria with its famous resort Golden Sands– hilly, covered with lush vegetation, with steep headlands cutting into the sea, while to the south of Burgas lies a mostly flat area with wide sandy beaches. The main and largest resort on the south coast is no less famous sunny Beach.

The beaches of Bulgaria are a separate issue. The country boasts really good, long and, in some resorts, very wide (up to 150-200 meters) beaches, with soft golden sand. However, their cleanliness varies depending on the resort and the level of beach maintenance. The cleanest are in places oriented towards a relaxing family holiday (Albena, Riviera, Dunes, Elenite).

Main resorts of the northern coastAlbena, Balchik, Varna– the second largest city in Bulgaria (it can be conditionally classified as a resort; Varna, which is also the largest port of Bulgaria on the Black Sea, is not suitable for a beach holiday), Golden Sands, Riviera, St. Constantine and Helena.

On the south coast the choice of resort places is also not small - this is C Sunny Beach, Sozopol, Pomorie, Dunes, Nessebar, Elenite, St. Vlas.

Which coast should you choose for your holiday? Due to the relatively short distance separating Varna and Burgas, there are practically no climatic differences between the northern and southern coasts. The air temperature and water temperature in the summer months are approximately the same in both places. However, due to the fact that the northern coast is more “green” and its resorts are literally buried in vegetation, the heat here is easier to bear and is more pleasant to the eye. Bulgaria is known for its children's holiday destinations due to its mild climate and wide sandy beaches with gentle entry into the water (but not everywhere), so in this matter both the northern and southern coasts also maintain parity.

The tourist infrastructure of both coasts is well developed, especially in Golden Sands and Sunny Beach, where there is a huge selection of hotels and apartments for every taste, of any category - from private studios and apartments from owners to 5-star hotel mega-complexes operating on an all-inclusive system. . The entertainment component of the holiday for tourists is also organized equally well on both the northern and southern coasts - these are water parks, amusement parks, many restaurants, cafes, karaoke, nightclubs, bars, etc.

The general principle of choice is this - if on holiday in Bulgaria you want fun, “action” around, a noisy multi-kilometer promenade with establishments shimmering with lights at every step - choose Golden Sands or sunny Beach. All other places are much calmer and more intimate. If you prefer a respectable vacation, with an area closed from the general public, you like to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the surf, but at the same time you do not exclude the opportunity to “go out into the world” and unwind - the Riviera, separately located in the southern part of Golden Sands, is suitable for you. When Bulgaria was a socialist country, there was a closed complex for representatives of the party elite, and they knew a lot about relaxation and rest.

On the south coast it has a special charm Sozopol. This is a town with an ancient history and a clear artistic flavor, a favorite vacation spot for artists and people of other creative professions. Many countries have their own Riviera (by analogy with the famous French Riviera), so some call Sozopol the Bulgarian Saint-Tropez. I don’t presume to assert the validity of this comparison, but there is no doubt that the town on the peninsula is really nice and picturesque.

Another noteworthy place on the southern coast of Bulgaria is Nessebar, a city on a peninsula in close proximity to Sunny Beach. It is customary to separate New and Old Nessebar (which is connected to the land by a narrow isthmus). Old Nessebar makes it possible to live some distance from the noisy Sunny Beach, but at the same time you can always reach its promenade on foot or take a tourist train.

Sandanski, Velingrad

Hisarya, Pomorie, St. Constantine and Helena

Bulgaria is an ideal holiday country for tourists from all over the world. This country has a mild climate, and therefore the air temperature in July and August rarely exceeds 30 degrees.

Conventionally, all resorts in Bulgaria are divided into northern and southern. The southern coast of Bulgaria with its resorts provides tourists with the opportunity to relax economically, since prices at these resorts are lower. Also, it is in the southern Bulgarian resorts that the holiday season lasts longer and has a lot of diverse cultural and historical monuments of the country.

Regardless of which resort on the southern coast vacationers are staying at (Ravda, Nessebar, Sunny Beach, Tsarevo, Elenite, Burgas, St. Vlas, etc.), they can easily get to another southern resort and see the sights of this area , since there are good transport connections between all southern resorts.

Perhaps the most interesting place in the south of Bulgaria, as well as the main attraction, is the city of Nessebar. Moreover, we are not talking about the new part of Nessebar, but about the old one, which has a unique history. This city is rightfully considered the pearl of the Black Sea coast.

The old part of Nessebar is a museum town, which, in general, is a small island. On its territory there are numerous architectural monuments that testify to the rich past of the entire country. The city was founded more than 3000 years ago. At the moment, it actively conducts excursions, where you can learn numerous details about the appearance of certain cultural and historical monuments. The hallmark of the city is 10 original churches of historical significance for Bulgaria (Church of Christ Pantocrator, Church of St. John the Baptist, Metropolitan Church, etc.).

In the new part of the city there are hotels where you can stay. Prices there are quite reasonable, and any bus can take you to the busier places on the southern coast of Bulgaria.

The most interesting place for lovers of active recreation at sea is the resort of Primorsko. In Bulgaria, this area is considered a place where all possible types of active recreation are concentrated - windsurfing, tennis, football, pedalos and much more.

Burgas, being the second largest Bulgarian city, is also of interest to holidaymakers from all over the world. This city is home to a fairly famous Marine Park. It is located along the Black Sea coast. On an area of 7 km there are numerous entertainment venues, masterpieces of landscape art, sculptures, and there is also a Summer Theater where you can see fun, interesting performances and concerts.

There is another significant attraction in Burgas - the ancient fortress of Pyrgos, or rather, all that remains of it after so many years are ruins. The fortress is located on the shore of Lake Mandrens. Tourists enjoy an incredibly beautiful view.

Another famous resort on the southern coast of Bulgaria is Pomorie. It is interesting, first of all, because on its territory there is a lake with healing mud. That is why tourists who want to improve their health most often go here.

In addition to the fact that the resort has a rather mild climate, a very clean sea, even the sand here is healing - it contains iron salts.

By the way, this resort has a large number of vineyards. Many Bulgarian wines are produced here. Therefore, this resort is also interesting for fans of gastronomic tourism.

Perhaps no less interesting place than Nessebar is Sozopol. This city is in many ways similar to the mentioned museum city of Bulgaria. Sozopol also includes an old and a new part, with the old part located on a small island.

The new part of the city of Sozopol was named Harmanit due to the fact that previously there were a large number of mills in this part. At the moment, there is only one mill in the city, but it also arouses active interest among vacationers.

In the old part of the city there are the ruins of the ancient fortress of Atia, the ruins of numerous necropolises, Thracian fortresses, as well as other ancient structures.

It is important that in the recent past the relics of John the Baptist were discovered in Sozopol, which quickly turned this city into a center of pilgrimage tourism.

It is worth noting that throughout Bulgaria there are a lot of interesting places for tourists. Therefore, having familiarized yourself with the sights of the South Coast, you can safely go to the north of Bulgaria and enjoy the beauty of the North Coast.

The southern coast is home to picturesque sea bays and coves, untouched nature with oases of nature reserves, new resorts with modern architecture and small ancient towns with their own unique flavor.

Resorts

The most famous resorts in the region: Elenite, Dunes, Nessebar, Pomorie, Primorsko, St. Vlas, Sozopol, Sunny Beach, Tsarevo. All resorts on the South Coast are served by an international airport in Burgas.

Sunny Beach- one of the most popular tourist centers in Bulgaria. It is located 35 km north of Burgas near the ancient city of Nessebar. This is the largest resort in the country, which got its name thanks to the golden sandy beaches that stretch in a semicircle for 10 km along the coast. Sunny Beach is located in an ecologically clean area, far from major highways and big cities. Fine sand and a gently sloping entrance make the resort an ideal place for families with children. Here you will be offered a variety of sports activities: water skiing, catamarans, banana boats and jet skis, windsurfing and parasailing, as well as volleyball, tennis, bowling, horse riding and more. In the north, Sunny Beach ends with the heights of the Stara Planina massif, where you can engage in mountain tourism and enjoy hiking and horseback riding. In summer there are always a lot of young people at the resort. The discos of Sunny Beach are known far beyond its borders. Many of them take place right in the open air, for example, on the popular Cacao Beach, where the most fashionable DJs in Europe rule the roost.

Near Sunny Beach there is Nessebar- UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a historical city that belonged at different times to the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. You will remember your holiday in Nessebar for the unique atmosphere of the Old Town, which is created by the ruins of medieval temples, fortress walls and the ancient port, as well as ancient houses decorated with wooden bay windows and cobblestone streets. The ethnographic and archaeological museums are interesting to visit, where you can see gold jewelry and coins of the 4th-1st centuries BC. BC, antique figured ceramics, an impressive collection of icons, traditional Bulgarian jewelry and costumes. But in Nessebar, guests of Bulgaria will find not only an exciting journey “deep into the centuries”. Comfortable hotels have been built here, offering accommodation for different categories of tourists, and there are many restaurants and taverns where they prepare amazingly delicious dishes from fresh seafood, including shark meat, lobster tail and battered mussels.

Resort town Primorsko located on the picturesque peninsula of the South Coast, at the foot of the Strandzha Mountains, in a protected area with untouched forests, unique rock formations and a rich historical past. Until recently, these places were closed to tourists, since there was a government residence not far from the resort. Now a large children's and youth center has been built here, and the developed infrastructure of the resort can satisfy, perhaps, any needs of vacationers. When you come on vacation to Primorsko, you can go parasailing, fly a motor hang glider, ride a scooter, boat, boat and catamaran, play football, volleyball, basketball, billiards, and visit the tennis courts. And also for adults and little guests of the resort, there is the AquaPlanet water park - one of the most famous on the Black Sea coast. It includes large and small pools, breathtaking water attractions, winding tunnels and an artificial river. Primorsko is also famous for its monuments of national culture and history, which include the remains of the ancient city of Ranuli on Cape Maslen Nos, the Church of St. Paraskeva and the Begliktash observatory-sanctuary. And on the territory of the Ropotamo Nature Reserve, located near Primorsko, you can find the rarest species of plants and animals. Another protected place, a few kilometers from Primorsko, is the Arkutino Botanical Garden, where you can see an amazing plant - the water rose.

Pomorie is located on a narrow picturesque rocky peninsula 10 km northeast of Burgas and 20 km from Sunny Beach. This Bulgarian resort has long been known for its unique healing capabilities. Even the ancient Thracians called the area “sacred” because of its salt lakes and healing mud. The first mud bath in Pomorie was opened in 1902, and now Spa tourism is actively developing here. In addition, the sea here is very clean; the resort has repeatedly received the Blue Flag award for ecology. Most beaches in Pomorie and the surrounding area have sand of a dark, grayish hue due to the high iron content. This sand is very useful in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. The city's attractions include the salt-making museum, the Church of the Transfiguration and the Orthodox monastery of St. George the Victorious, as well as the architectural reserve "Old Houses of Pomorie" - this is the name of the block of houses of the 19th century. The resort often hosts concerts, poetry evenings and theater performances. While relaxing here, you can go on an excursion with tasting to the Pomorie wine cellar, rent a sailing boat, go windsurfing, parasailing or go fishing.

Saint Vlas is a young, promising resort for family holidays, located just three kilometers from the famous Sunny Beach. Recently, many luxury hotels have been built here, and each hotel complex has its own territory with swimming pools and bars, playgrounds and sports grounds. In Sveti Vlas you can serenely enjoy a relaxing holiday in a cozy environment. And if you want more active leisure, go to discos in neighboring Sunny Beach, or on excursions to Burgas or Nessebar.

Tsarevo located on two picturesque peninsulas, in the very south of the coast, near the border with Turkey and 65 km from Burgas. This Black Sea resort is famous for its mild climate and picturesque scenery. The resort is remote from big cities and highways, so it is very popular among couples, among those who highly value tranquility and a measured pace of life. Tsarevo is also popular among lovers of ecotourism, fishing and yachtsmen. This resort often hosts regattas and other water competitions. This area of the Bulgarian coast is often called the Center of Nestinarism - this is a religious and cultural phenomenon in Bulgaria that combines pagan and Orthodox traditions. In the villages near Tsarevo live nestinars, who are often invited to folklore evenings, where they perform a dance on hot coals in honor of Saints Constantine and Helen. And among the local attractions are the Ancient Ahtopol Wall, the Medieval Fortress, the Churches of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, St. Panteleimon, St. Cyril and Methodius, Thracian ruins, as well as a museum with the remains of the Bulgarian ship “Goryanin”.

Elenite- a cozy resort village located at the foot of Stara Planina. Mighty mountain peaks reliably protect the area from northern winds, thanks to which a particularly mild and warm microclimate has formed here. From time immemorial, this fertile land is buried in dense coniferous forests, which saturate the air with healing volatile phytoncides. Here, on the Black Sea coast, “ringed” with relict pine trees, you can finally escape from the hustle and bustle and devote time to relaxation and restoration of mental strength. The resort offers comfortable hotels, a spacious sandy beach, clear clear water and a variety of entertainment for adults and children: surfing, yachting, water slides, banana and pedalo rides, beach soccer and volleyball. The resort also has its own water park.

Dunes- one of the youngest and most popular tourist centers in Bulgaria. It was built quite recently, in the late 80s, 40 km south of Burgas in the territory of a natural park. The resort got its name thanks to the luxurious sand dunes that stretch along the coast for four and a half kilometers. Local beaches have been awarded the honorary “Blue Flag” for environmental cleanliness for several years. The sea here is calm, with a gentle entrance and a sandy bottom, which makes it safe even for children. Guests can enjoy a wide range of entertainment options. Here you can go horseback riding through the picturesque Strandja Mountains, go yachting and windsurfing, play tennis and mini-golf. In the evenings, the local amphitheater plays live music and entertains with show programs.

Resort town Sozopol was founded back in 610 BC. Greek colonialists on a small rocky peninsula 30 km from Burgas. A holiday here will surely appeal to romantic people. Ancient houses with red tiles, beautiful churches, narrow cobbled streets covered with green grapes and figs, a picturesque harbour, sandy beaches and fantastic sea views - what could be more inspiring? Connoisseurs of historical attractions in Sozopol will also not be bored. Here you can see the majestic temples of the Bulgarian National Revival, including the Church of St. George, the Church of the Holy Virgin, and also explore the ruins of the fortress walls. And just one kilometer from the resort is the island of St. Ivan - the largest in Bulgaria. In 2010, the relics of St. John the Baptist were discovered here, which are now kept in the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in Sozopol itself. And for those who like to enjoy natural beauty, we recommend going on an excursion to the mouth of the Ropotamo River, which is often compared to the Amazon in terms of beauty and richness of flora and fauna. In this “paradise”, lost in the emerald greenery of wild vineyards, you can listen to the ringing trills of exotic birds, watch calm turtles and admire the delicate beauty of quivering lilies “crowning” the mirror-like surface of the water. The reserve is located 20 km from the city.

Climate

The climate of the southern coast is close to the Mediterranean type, air and sea temperatures are one or two degrees higher than in the north of the Bulgarian coast.

Beaches and swimming season

The southern coast is distinguished by wide beaches with sand dunes and a gentle entrance to the sea. The swimming season lasts from the second half of May until the end of September.
