How much are parking lots in Riga. Features of paying for parking in Riga with a credit card How to pay for parking in Riga with a credit card

Individual owners of cars with foreign registration numbers have been fined dozens and hundreds of times in Riga for violating parking rules, most of them do not even think of paying the fines issued, the Delfi portal writes, citing representatives of the municipal police.

In total, last year, 3,624 protocols were issued for cars with non-Latvian numbers for parking violations by the Riga police, which is 7.5% of their total number. However, in reality there are far fewer violators than protocols.

According to the municipal police, they already know many violators by sight and, although there are no exact statistics, it feels like there are cars in Riga with foreign numbers, the owners of which were fined 100-250 times. At the same time, the Riga municipal police note that, unlike the police of other countries, they never ignore cars with foreign numbers and in any case issue a fine.

The fine for violating the parking rules in Riga is 30-40 euros (55 - for parking in a place for the disabled, not having the right to do so). According to Delfi's calculations, this means that in total "foreigners" last year had to pay the city from 108 to 150 thousand euros. However in a municipal police of Riga do not know - whether have paid. And they can only rely on the conscience of car owners, because so far there is no mechanism that would force owners of cars with foreign registration numbers to pay fines for improper parking.

The State Police confirmed this to Delfi, but noted that a mechanism is being developed right now that would allow "delivering" such fines at the place of registration to everyone, even owners of "foreign cars". For several years, a similar problem was with fines for speeding, which were recorded by radars. It has long been resolved and today the European owner finds a fine in any case, regardless of the country of registration of his car numbers.

So far, the only effective mechanism for "working" with violators on foreign license plates is to evacuate the vehicle. It is possible in three cases:

  • If the intruder stands where it is impossible and interferes with the movement, he can be evacuated immediately;
  • If a fine is issued for improper parking and eight hours after that the car is still standing, it can also be evacuated;
  • If the intruder has already been caught in a parking lot in places for the disabled and has been caught again within a year, he can be evacuated immediately.

When evacuating the car, it is taken to an impound lot, from where it can be picked up only after paying all related fines and expenses - regardless of whether registration numbers which country is installed on it.

In Latvia, as in many other European countries, parking rules are quite strict. Tourists should familiarize themselves with them before renting a car or going on a trip around Riga in their own transport.

Parking Features

First of all, you need to know:

  • Where are the parking lots.
  • How they work.
  • Is there a parking fee.

So, for example, in the sleeping areas of the city, parking is almost always free, but the closer to the center, the higher the cost. It is noteworthy that you can pay for parking in two simple ways: using SMS or through a payment terminal that is installed in front of parking. The payment is transferred to the municipal enterprise Rigas Satiksme.

Basic Rules

Leaving the vehicle in the wrong place for a few minutes, the driver runs the risk of getting a ticket. And it doesn't matter how long the car, scooter, motorcycle or any other means of transportation has stood. Parking places are marked with a “P” sign, under which there is usually information about the opening hours of parking lots.

All parking lots are divided into certain zones. It depends on them, what will be the cost of parking for a particular period of time. If it is necessary to leave the car in guarded parking lots (EuroPark), which are usually located near business centers and offices of various sizes, then you will have to pay a little more than for street parking. However, this is beneficial in cases where the transport will have to stand for a long time (for example, 10-11 hours).

Under each parking sign there is an additional one that indicates exactly how you can leave the car. For example, driving to the side of the road completely or standing on it with only one side.

These rules are almost always strictly observed by local residents, since the fines for violations are too high.

Parking hours

Most often, the signs indicate exactly how long the parking lot is open. Almost all municipal (street) parking lots are open on weekdays from 8 am to 8 pm local time. Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.

It is noteworthy that the rest of the time, which is not indicated on the signs, you can use the municipal parking lot for free. In shopping centers there are parking spaces, which are provided for a fee, not much different from the street. But this applies only to those shopping centers that are located in the center of Riga. If the complex is located in a residential area or in the suburbs, then parking, as a rule, is free, regardless of the time of day.

Private car parks

In Riga, there is such a thing as private parking lots. They work on the same principle as municipal ones. However, at the entrance to them you will have to pay immediately, having determined the time. Several payment methods:

  • Terminal.
  • Payment to the watchman (if the parking lot is guarded).
  • Through the terminal on the barrier, if the parking lot is equipped with them.

The opening hours of a particular private car park are indicated at the entrance.

Sanctions for non-payment

In Riga, the practice of evacuating violators' cars is not very common. However, there are still penalties. A blocker is hung on the rear or front wheel of the car, which prevents the vehicle from moving. It is impossible to remove it yourself.

In this case, the penalty is double or triple the parking fee.

Even if a blocker was not installed on the transport, and the fine was issued by the police, it will not work to leave the country without paying the declared amount. Latvian border guards are quite strictly monitoring this moment.

Parking cost

In Riga, all parking spaces are divided into 5 zones: A, B, C, D and R. The latter refers to Old Riga, where the cost is always higher than in any other area of the city. The rest are defined as follows:

  • And - the most expensive municipal.
  • D is the most budget.

All prices are charged in euro, since Latvia has switched to this currency, recognizing it as the national one. Parking fee:

  • In zone A it will cost 2 euros for the first hour, and 3 euros for each subsequent hour.
  • In zone B - 1.5 euros for the first hour, 2.3 euros - subsequent.
  • C - 1.2 euros for the first hour, 1.8 euros - each next.
  • D - 0.9 euros for the first hour, 1.2 euros for the next.

That is why it is considered beneficial to leave the car for a long time in the parking lots of business centers, where parking for several hours will cost 3 euros (for example, from 8 am to 8 pm).

Old Riga

You can enter Old Riga by car for free, but it will be quite difficult to move around:

  • First, the streets are too narrow for two cars to pass freely.
  • Secondly, many driveways and lanes are one-way traffic, which also causes some difficulties in moving.
  • Thirdly, Old Riga is a favorite place for many tourists from all over the world who walk around the city in large groups.

Parking in this part of the city is the most expensive: 4.5 euros for the first hour and 7.5 euros for each subsequent hour.

Free parking

Despite the fact that parking in the city center is almost always paid, there is a chance to save money. Near the center, not far from Old Riga, on the right side of the Daugava River, there is a free parking lot for vehicles. It is almost always full of cars. You can get there only early in the morning, while working Latvians are just about to leave home.

On the left side of the river, there are quite a few free parking lots, although their sizes are not too large. The underground parking near the Olympia shopping center stands out significantly, which can accommodate a lot of cars, and there are almost always free places.

If you are going to visit Riga by car, you should prepare the n-th amount in advance to pay for parking. Of course, there are free parking lots, but you can not always be sure that you will take a place there. Street parking is almost always safe, as well as guarded at business centers and offices. The level of car crime in the city is negligible, so you can leave your vehicle in any of the parking lots, calmly go about your business by public transport or on foot.

When traveling around Europe by car, drivers need to remember not so much about local traffic rules as about parking rules in a particular country.

In Latvia, as in other European countries, car parking rules, the observance of which is strictly monitored by law enforcement agencies and the violation of which is fraught with serious fines.

Even leaving the car in the wrong place for a couple of minutes, you can return and find a receipt for paying a fine on the glass.

Basic parking rules in Riga

Another nuance of parking that guests of the Latvian capital should take into account in advance is its cost. Tourists planning to travel around Riga by car are advised to check parking rates in advance in different parts of the city, as prices can be quite high depending on the area.

The parking system in Riga is quite clear and simple. The basic principle of parking - the closer to the center, the more expensive the cost.

In residential areas, you can park your car for free or use paid parking services. In the center of Riga, parking is almost always paid.

On the streets, the fee for car parking must be paid to the municipal enterprise "Rigas Satiksme". Pay for parking quite simple: you need to pay either through payment terminals or via SMS.

Almost all RP SIA "Rigas satiksme" car parks (except for Old Riga - Zone R) are open on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00, on Saturdays from 9:00 to 17:00. The rest of the time, that is, late in the evening, at night and on Sunday, these car parks allowed to use for free.

In many yards in Riga there are paid private parking lots, but their prices are practically the same as municipal ones. There are also special terminals installed accepting payment. Sometimes there are parking lots with barriers, where the guard takes the payment.

Another type of parking in Riga is shopping mall parking. The same principle applies here as throughout the city. If the mall is not in the center, then parking is free.

If the retail space is located in the center of Riga, you will have to pay for parking. However, there are exceptions here too. So, some stores allow free parking if the owner of the car made a purchase in the store.

It needs to be said right away sanctions for non-payment of parking. If the car is parked in a closed or guarded parking lot, then you won’t be able to leave without paying, as the car will simply not be released.

If the car is parked in the place where you need to pay through the payment parking terminal and put the receipt under the glass, the lack of payment can lead to a fine. In Riga rarely evacuate cars in the absence of parking fees.

Most often, the owner of the car, who forgot or did not want to pay for parking, upon returning, will find an auto-lock on the wheel of the car. In this case, you will have to pay double the amount of parking.

Another option is when the car owner pays incomplete parking amount. In this case, as well as in the event of a parking violation, he will most likely have to pay a fine.

If the car was rented, the company will charge the amount of the fine from the presented credit card as soon as it receives a notice, even if the tourist has already left for Russia.

If a fine is issued for a tourist's personal car, then it may be required to be paid when crossing the Russian-Latvian border. Thus, it is still better to follow the rules for paying for car parking in Riga.

How much does parking cost in Riga

As already mentioned, street parking in the center of Riga is paid almost everywhere. At the same time, the entire central part of the city is divided into five zones with different tariffs. Parking zones are indicated by Latin letters.

The cost of parking in Riga in these zones decreases in alphabetical order, that is, zone A - more expensive parking lots located closer to the center, zone D - parking with minimum rates. Zone R stands out in particular, denoting Old Riga.

Here parking is the most expensive and always paid regardless of the time of day.

Since January 2014 in Riga, in connection with the transition to the euro, the following zone tariffs for car parking are in effect:

first hour of parking

every next hour

zone A

zone B

zone C

zone D

zone R

Entrance by car to Old Riga

The entrance to the old part of the city itself is free, but it is difficult to get around by car there, since the streets in the historical part of Riga are very narrow. In addition, many of them have one-way traffic.

Do not forget about the large number of people moving along the streets of Old Riga. Motorists have to skip crowds of tourists and locals so it's hard to get around by car.

The cost of parking in Old Riga has also already been mentioned (zone R). Here it is very expensive - in the first hour parking costs 4.27 EUR, and in the next - 7.11 EUR.

Therefore, it is not recommended to call in, let alone leave the car in the parking lot in the Old Town.

There are three options for tourists traveling around Riga by car:

  • The best option- choose a hotel for accommodation, which is located in the very center of Riga or at least nearby and offers its guests parking. In this case, there will be no problems with parking, since the main historical sights can be reached on foot in just a few minutes;
  • Leave the car in a paid parking lot in the central part of Riga, close to the Old Town (for example, in zone A);
  • Leave the car in free parking lots away from the center and then travel by public transport. From some free parking lots you can get to Old Riga on foot in 15-30 minutes.

Free parking near the center of Riga

Near the Old Riga, on the right side of the Daugava there is the only free parking, which is located 3-5 minutes from the historical part of the city. You need to drive here from the embankment through the Statoil gas station.

However, despite the large area of the parking lot, getting here during working hours is not so easy, as the parking lot is always crowded. So if you're planning on leaving your car here, must arrive before 9 am.

There are many free parking lots on the left bank of the Daugava. To quickly get to the Old Town, you can advise the following places:

  • Parking at the shopping center "Olympia", located on the other side of the Cable-stayed bridge from Old Riga. From the shopping center you can walk to the main attractions of the city in 15-20 minutes;
  • The main advantage of this underground parking is that there are always free places and you can leave the car for the whole day. There, in the shopping center, you can have a cheap meal and buy groceries.

  • Streets that adjoin the Stone Bridge. From here you can also get to the center in 10 minutes, but finding a free place here is much more difficult.

Payment for parking in Riga

Municipal car parks have payment machines who accept payment in accordance with the tariff. The machine issues a check indicating the time of action. This check must be left under the windshield of the car.

The second payment option for parking is using a mobile phone. To do this, send an SMS to 1859.

When parking the car, the message must contain the following information:

  • start (that is, the beginning of payment);
  • car number;
  • tariff zone.

Example: start AA5243 A

When leaving the parking lot, you need to send an SMS message, which states:

  • stop (i.e. termination of payment);
  • car license plate;
  • tariff zone.

Example: stop AA5243 A

Proper parking will allow car owners to freely move around Riga by car and leave the car in the parking lot without violating local traffic rules.

Going to the capital of Latvia, drivers should study the rules of the road in a European country before going on a tourist trip. They are also advised to find out the cost of parking in Riga. Traffic police strictly enforce the rules. At the slightest violation, serious penalties are imposed. Even leaving the vehicle for five minutes in the wrong places, you can see that the car is taken by a tow truck to the impound lot.

There are different parking rules in different parts of the city. The shorter the distance to the center, the higher the price.

Features of parking in the capital of Latvia

The rules for placing cars in parking lots are simple and clear. First of all, you need to find out where parking is located in a particular area. How does it work and is there a fee for it.

There are two ways to pay for the service - using payment terminals installed in parking lots, or through the mobile application of the municipal enterprise of the capital Rigas Satiksme.

Parking spaces are marked with a “P” sign and are easy to spot. It also contains information about the operating time. Parking lots are divided into certain zones, on which the price for a specific period of time directly depends. If drivers need to leave the car in guarded parking lots located near an office building, shopping or entertainment center, they will have to pay a large amount.

There are signs in front of the signs, which indicate how it is allowed to park the car. For example, standing on the side of the road with one side or driving into it completely.

Reference. Local residents strictly observe the rules, as the penalties for their violation are impressive. In addition, the amount is doubled if the vehicle is sent to a penalty parking lot.

Working hours and penalties

A special sign usually indicates the opening hours of the parking lot. Almost every paid street (municipal) parking lot is open from 8.00 to 20.00 (on weekdays). On weekends and holidays, the opening hours are from 9.00 to 17.00. In other periods of time, cars are parked free of charge. However, this rule does not apply to places located near shopping and entertainment centers.

If the complexes are located in the residential areas of the capital, or in its suburban area, places, as a rule, are not paid (at any time of the day).

Parking lots in the center of Riga are divided into five zones marked with letters: A, B, C, D, R. The most expensive is the last one. This is the old part of the city. A - municipal, also expensive for drivers. D - located in the distance, therefore one of the most budgetary.

Parking fees are paid in euros:

Entrance to the old Riga is not paid, although moving around in this area is quite problematic because of the narrow streets. Most of them are one way. In addition, there are many other difficulties. The capital of Latvia is a favorite place for tourists. Therefore, in the central part there are always a lot of pedestrians, which causes difficulties with the movement of cars.

Experienced motorists traveling around Latvia give advice on how to save yourself from unnecessary problems:

  1. The best option is to choose a place of residence in the immediate vicinity of the parking lot. Then there are no difficulties with parking, and historical sights can be reached without problems.
  2. Leave transport away from the central part, using free parking. And move around the capital by tram, trolleybus or other public transport. Usually free parking lots are located close to Old Riga. You can walk to them in 15-20 minutes.
  3. Leave cars in budget zone D.

Attention! You can save money by using free parking lots located as close to the center as possible. These are the streets that adjoin the Stone Bridge, or a place near the Olympia shopping center. It is quite difficult to park a car on such sites, they are constantly filled. However, if you arrive at 9 am, this is quite realistic.
