Southern resorts of Bulgaria. Southern resorts of Bulgaria Southern resorts of Bulgaria

Bulgaria is an ideal holiday country for tourists from all over the world. This country has a mild climate, and therefore the air temperature in July and August rarely exceeds 30 degrees.

Conventionally, all resorts in Bulgaria are divided into northern and southern. The southern coast of Bulgaria with its resorts provides tourists with the opportunity to relax economically, since prices at these resorts are lower. Also, it is in the southern Bulgarian resorts that the holiday season lasts longer and has a lot of diverse cultural and historical monuments of the country.

Regardless of which resort on the southern coast vacationers are staying at (Ravda, Nessebar, Sunny Beach, Tsarevo, Elenite, Burgas, St. Vlas, etc.), they can easily get to another southern resort and see the sights of this area , since there are good transport connections between all southern resorts.

Perhaps the most interesting place in the south of Bulgaria, as well as the main attraction, is the city of Nessebar. Moreover, we are not talking about the new part of Nessebar, but about the old one, which has a unique history. This city is rightfully considered the pearl of the Black Sea coast.

The old part of Nessebar is a museum town, which, in general, is a small island. On its territory there are numerous architectural monuments that testify to the rich past of the entire country. The city was founded more than 3000 years ago. At the moment, it actively conducts excursions, where you can find out numerous details about the appearance of certain cultural and historical monuments. The hallmark of the city is 10 original churches of historical significance for Bulgaria (Church of Christ Pantocrator, Church of John the Baptist, Metropolitan Church, etc.).

In the new part of the city there are hotels where you can stay. Prices there are quite reasonable, and any bus can take you to the busier places on the southern coast of Bulgaria.

The most interesting place for lovers of active recreation at sea is the resort of Primorsko. In Bulgaria, this area is considered a place where all possible types of active recreation are concentrated - windsurfing, tennis, football, pedalos and much more.

Burgas, being the second largest Bulgarian city, is also of interest to holidaymakers from all over the world. This city is home to a fairly famous Marine Park. It is located along the Black Sea coast. On an area of 7 km there are numerous entertainment venues, masterpieces of landscape art, sculptures, and there is also a Summer Theater where you can see fun, interesting performances and concerts.

There is another significant attraction in Burgas - the ancient fortress of Pyrgos, or rather, all that remains of it after so many years are ruins. The fortress is located on the shore of Lake Mandrens. Tourists enjoy an incredibly beautiful view.

Another famous resort on the southern coast of Bulgaria is Pomorie. It is interesting, first of all, because on its territory there is a lake with healing mud. That is why tourists who want to improve their health most often go here.

In addition to the fact that the resort has a rather mild climate, a very clean sea, even the sand here is healing - it contains iron salts.

By the way, this resort has a large number of vineyards. Many Bulgarian wines are produced here. Therefore, this resort is also interesting for fans of gastronomic tourism.

Perhaps no less interesting place than Nessebar is Sozopol. This city is in many ways similar to the mentioned museum city of Bulgaria. Sozopol also includes an old and a new part, with the old part located on a small island.

The new part of the city of Sozopol was named Harmanit due to the fact that previously there were a large number of mills in this part. At the moment, there is only one mill in the city, but it also arouses active interest among vacationers.

In the old part of the city there are the ruins of the ancient fortress of Atia, the ruins of numerous necropolises, Thracian fortresses, as well as other ancient structures.

It is important that in the recent past the relics of John the Baptist were discovered in Sozopol, which quickly turned this city into a center of pilgrimage tourism.

It is worth noting that throughout Bulgaria there are a lot of interesting places for tourists. Therefore, having familiarized yourself with the sights of the South Coast, you can safely go to the north of Bulgaria and enjoy the beauty of the North Coast.

Holidays in Bulgarian resorts are an excellent option for families. This country has amazingly beautiful mountains, azure seas and healthy thermal springs. Which resort to choose for a seaside holiday in Bulgaria? This is the first question every traveler asks himself. When we were choosing a resort on the Black Sea, we searched through a lot of information and reviews on the Internet. In this article we will briefly talk about the features of popular resorts on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. All you have to do is choose a vacation to your liking.

Bulgarian seaside resorts vary in popularity, budget, nature, beaches, infrastructure and attractions. They are located along the entire Black Sea coast (which is about 400 km) in two large regions of Bulgaria: on the northern coast and the southern coast. They are separated by the Stara Planina mountain range, covered with forests. It crashes into the Black Sea between the resort towns of Obzor and Elenite. In this place, the cliffs of Cape Emine, the extreme point of Stara Planina, rise above the waves.

Cape Emine is the conventional border between the northern and southern coasts.

Resorts on the northern coast of Bulgaria located between Romania and the resort of Obzor. The most popular of them are Kavarna, Albena, Golden Sands, St. Constantine and Helena, Byala, Obzor.

Resorts on the southern coast of Bulgaria– start from Elenite and stretch along the coast to the border with Turkey. The most famous are Elenite, St. Vlas, Sunny Beach, Pomorie, Burgas, Sozopol, Dunes, Tsarevo.

Weather in Bulgaria

The northern and southern resort regions of Bulgaria are separated by the Stara Planina mountain range, which protects the southern coast from the cold northern winds.

The difference in air temperature between the southern and northern resort regions is only 2 degrees. It is a little warmer in the south and there is less rainfall here than in the north. Sea currents also mean that the water in southern Bulgaria warms up earlier and cools down longer than on the northern coast of the Black Sea.

On the south coast, the beach season begins at the beginning of June and ends at the end of September. We rested from June 5 to June 12. For the first 5 days we even swam, the sea warmed up to 21-23 degrees. You won’t be able to splash around in such water for a long time with your children. But we often went ashore to bask))) Sunbathing on the beach at this time is a pleasure: on average + 25 degrees, the sun is gentle and not scorching.

The remaining two days we were unlucky with the weather: rain, cloudy, strong wind, cold water. June is the rainiest month of the summer, but usually the rains linger for 2-3 days and then the sun shines again.

On the northern coast, the beach season comes into force a little later - in mid-June and lasts until mid-September. Rainy weather occurs here more often in June and September than in the south. But it also goes away in 2-3 days.

If you decide to vacation at sea in Bulgaria in the first half of June or September, then it is better to choose resorts on the southern Black Sea coast. This way you have a better chance of swimming and sunbathing.

High beach season at sea resorts in Bulgaria: July-August. The sea water warms up to 23-25 degrees in July and 24-26 degrees in August, and the air temperature averages 25-30 degrees. A pleasant breeze blows from the sea, so you hardly feel the heat. At this time, you can choose a holiday at any resort on the northern or southern coast of Bulgaria.

Beaches of Bulgaria

Of the 400 km of coastline of the Black Sea coast, 130 km are occupied by beaches with fine golden sand. “Blue Flag”- a prestigious international award that is presented to beaches every year at the beginning of June for the quality and purity of water, safe swimming and environmental friendliness. In 2016, the beaches of the following resorts were awarded the Blue Flag: Sunny Day, Sveti Vlas, Sunny Beach, Pomorie, Sozopol, Dunes and Lozenets. Current information can be found on the organization's website.

The longest and largest sandy beach in Bulgaria is “Cocoa Beach” in the Sunny Beach resort. Its length is about 10 km and its width is 100 m. The widest sandy beach (150 m from the water's edge) is in Albena.

When we choose beach resorts, we try to avoid beaches near major seaports. We think that the water near them cannot be clean, environmentally friendly and safe for swimming. The major ports of Bulgaria are located in the cities of Varna and Burgas. We do not recommend going to these cities for a beach holiday. And on excursions - please)))

And now more about the resorts of each region of the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.

Northern coast of Bulgaria

It stretches from Cape Emine and the Obzor resort to the Rusalka resort and the border with Romania.

Beaches: The northern coastline of the Black Sea is very diverse. High cliffs, rocky shores and bays of the resorts Rusalka, Kavarna, Balchik are gradually replaced by the wide sandy beaches of Albena, Kranevo, Golden Sands, and Riviera.

Until recently, Rusalka was a prestigious closed club resort. A relaxing seaside holiday in a complex of villas was appreciated here. But the infrastructure is lame: it’s inconvenient to get here by public transport, there are no good supermarkets, and prices in local restaurants are off the charts. In recent years, children's camps have been organized at the Rusalka resort. Now there are problems with silence)))

Resorts on the Northern coast of Bulgaria with the best infrastructure: Golden Sands, Albena, St. Constantine and Helena, Obzor.

Vacation with children. The best resorts for a seaside holiday with kids are Albena, Kranevo, and Sunny Day. WITH older children and teenagers In addition to these holiday destinations, we also recommend Golden Sands, Kavarna, Topola.

Among the coastal Bulgarian towns, Ahtopol is the southernmost. The distance from it to Burgas is 86 km, and to the resort towns of Obzor and (Varna region) - about 165 km. 14 kilometers from Ahtopol along the Black Sea coast there is a highway of international importance that leads from Bulgaria to Turkey.

The city landscape of Ahtopol amazes not only with its beauty, but also with its extraordinary neatness and well-groomed buildings and streets. Houses under tiled roofs and paving stones on the road look very cozy and elegant.

Marine panorama of Ahtopol. The nature here is so picturesque and diverse that tourists can enjoy the soft sand of the beaches, admire the grandeur of centuries-old pine forests and rugged rocks.

One of the many city flower beds of Kazanlak. Being the geographical center of the Valley of Roses, the city is famous for its large number of rose flower beds and flower beds, the design of which is carried out by specialists.

Cape in the southern part of the bay. It is famous for its very picturesque steep descent to the sea. The monastery of St. John was located here, part of which, presumably, is still underground today.

Ahtopol embankment looks stunningly beautiful at night. It is very quiet and deserted here, since the city highly values the nighttime peace of local residents and visitors.

The surrounding landscapes of Ahtopol look very picturesque and peaceful. The combination of red-brown roof tiles and lush green garden trees evokes associations with Alpine villages.

The squat building of the ancient Church of the Ascension is located on the outskirts of one of the Ahtopol beaches, on a steep cliff near the sea. It is built of natural stone about 0.9 meters thick.

Thanks to the presence of deep bays well protected from the wind, in which sailing ships can conveniently moor, Ahtopol has transport links with the seaports of other countries. Therefore, this resort is constantly developing and looks very modern.

The Veleka River flows into the Black Sea just four kilometers from Ahtopol. The water in the local sea is calm and warm - up to 25 degrees. On the territory of Ahtopol beaches you can find many secluded places to relax. Summers here are cool and dry, and the average temperature during the season is 26 degrees. During the day, the wind blows from the sea, and in the evening from the shore - so the air is constantly refreshed, and the heat is easier to bear. The tourist season lasts from May to October.

Brief history of the city

If you explore the history of Ahtopol, it turns out that it is a rather ancient city. Greek settlements appeared here at approximately the same time as in the city. After being captured by the Romans, the city received the name Peronticus. As a result of barbarian raids, the settlement was often destroyed. And so one of the restorations was carried out by Agathon, a commander from Byzantium, who named the newly rebuilt city by his own name - Agatopolis.

In 1918, Ahtopol was completely destroyed as a result of a strong fire, and it had to be restored almost from scratch. Only small fragments of the fortress walls remain from the old city. Among the modern attractions, the monastery of St. John and the Church of the Ascension should also be noted. In addition, near the city there is the Malka Papia mountain peak, which is part of the Strandja Mountains.

From the sea side, Ahtopol looks very attractive, green and fresh. Despite its location on rocky terrain, the city is distinguished by beautiful scenery and a comfortable climate.

The city lighthouse tower is visible from all coastal parts of the city. In the evening, couples in love come here, dreaming of plunging into the romantic atmosphere of the ancient lighthouse.

Ahtopol boat pier. From here, local fishermen set sail every morning for their fishing, and exciting boat trips for tourists begin from here.

The center of Ahtopol is always calm. Resort life is in full swing on the sea coast, and in the central areas of the city, tourists can enjoy the atmosphere of silence and tranquility.

It is very interesting to look at Ahtopol from this perspective. From here you can see the rocky area that overlooks the Black Sea. Southern sunny Ahtopol borders Turkey.

There are always a lot of local and visiting vacationers on the wild beach of Ahtopol. The sandy strip near the seashore is reliably hidden from prying eyes by a high picturesque cliff.

Boat pier. Local fishermen leave their boats here and supply the city with fresh sea fish every day. From the pier you can go out to sea for a pleasant walk.

The sandy beach of Ahtopol traditionally attracts many local holidaymakers and tourists. On one side it is washed by the azure sea, and on the other side it is reliably protected by a very picturesque green hill.

The picturesque nature of Ahtopol

Relict forests grow along the banks of the Veleki River flowing in the valley of the mountain range. There is a lot of greenery around, a variety of birds live in the trees, the water is full of fish, and sometimes there are even aquatic turtles. Therefore, the mouth of the Veleka and all the unique nature here is under state protection.

Ahtopol infrastructure includes hotels, private cottages, restaurants, bistros and pastry shops. Here those interested can taste dishes of national Bulgarian cuisine.

Now Ahtopol continues to develop as one of the picturesque cities, because it is attractive from the point of view of construction investments.

Among the coastal Bulgarian towns, Ahtopol is the southernmost. The distance from it to Burgas is 86 km, and to the resort towns of Obzor and Byala (Varna region) - about 165 km.

I love Bulgaria very much. Once upon a time, it was with her that my interest in foreign countries and Europe began. Having already visited many other countries, I was finally able to look here. Bulgaria will always remain a special place for me - it is similar to Turkey, Germany, and Russia, and therefore combines many of the advantages of the countries listed above. Bulgaria is also good because there are low prices for hotels, fruits, vegetables, food in restaurants and cafes, trips and excursions. The beaches here are clean and comfortable, suitable for a simple beach holiday for any Russian family.

Bulgaria is a beautiful country, picturesque and similar enough to Russia that you can travel around it without any worries. Bulgaria, of course, is not all interesting for tourists: mostly there are small towns and villages, half-abandoned, on simple plains. But there is also a stunning city - the capital Sofia, which is half like a Russian city, half like a German city and at the same time very authentic. The photo below shows the Golden Sands resort.

And the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria is absolutely breathtaking. There are incredibly beautiful traditional seaside towns, recently restored by the state, large resorts with large hotels and large-format beaches, as well as wild bays where you can come by bus or car to enjoy their pristine beauty.

Beach holiday

Beach holidays in Bulgaria belong to the Black Sea coast. There are small towns with boutique hotels and apartments for rent, large resorts with large chain hotels and entire tourist towns, as well as small villages with picturesque bays for a quiet, secluded holiday. For example, like in Sveti Vlas in the photo below.

Beach holidays in Bulgaria are especially good due to the climate. Usually all the cities and villages on the coast are small, they have clean and pleasant air, there are no traffic jams or increased traffic, or the noise of a big city. Another plus is the spacious sandy beaches for those who are tired of pebbles and who are sensitive to this vacation destination. The brightest and cleanest beaches are in Pomorie, near Burgas. And here is a gorgeous color.

I visited many cities in Bulgaria, traveled all over the country, somewhere I was only two or three days, somewhere for two or even three or four weeks, and I can say with confidence that almost every place could become home for me: It's beautiful, cheap and clean here. I would say that Bulgaria is a wonderful place to relax and live!

Conventionally, in Bulgaria there are four regions for beach holidays, marked on the map with stars of different colors. The North belongs to such resorts as Varna and Golden Sands, here are the most popular resorts where a lot of Russians have been vacationing for many years. From north to south, the list of Bulgarian resorts looks like this:

  • Varna is a large city with large shops and a port (there is also a beach here), and Golden Sands is an artificially created and very neat and beautiful resort village. These two resorts are located on the north coast.
  • The center belongs to, Nessebar and, where in Nessebar you can plunge into Bulgarian culture, in Sunny Beach you can swim, and in Sveti Vlas you can relax from the hustle and bustle surrounded by green hills of wondrous beauty.
  • Burgas is good for those who want to come to a real resort city, and not an artificial one, to walk around the city, streets, shops and parks, which is not the case in most Bulgarian resorts. At the same time, Pomorie is a good place to relax with children, the water here is the cleanest, the entry into the sea is very gentle, simply the best in Bulgaria. is a great little village with a beautiful Old Town, which is very loved by Europeans.
  • And the wild south, where the villages of Sinemorets, Primorsko, Kiten and Ahtopol are located, is the last lower section for those who love a relaxing holiday by the sea in the wilderness, in the provinces, but with a pleasant climate and clean air. Below you will learn more about each region.

Varna and Golden Sands (north)

Varna is a large city with a population of 335 thousand people. There are a lot of places for walking, beautiful green alleys and parks, classical architecture, many shops, restaurants and hotels. The city lives more independently from tourists than other cities in Bulgaria, so it may be of interest to those who want to see real Bulgarian life with their own eyes. This city is perhaps the greenest of all. There are also good large beaches here that are convenient for tourists. The only negative is the presence of a port, which pollutes the surrounding waters. I would advise you to swim in Golden Sands, nearby, and go for a walk - specifically to Varna.

In August in Varna, an ideal vacation can be spent in a hotel for 50-60 USD per day for four in a good room of 40-60 square meters.

Golden Sands is a resort in which there are no local Bulgarian residents at all. Everyone who works here in the service for tourists lives in Varna or at the hotel. Golden Sands is famous for its almost endless beaches, and the city itself, its streets, cafes and restaurants are very beautiful and well-kept.

In Golden Sands you can rent a room for four in a hotel on the first line for 100-200 USD in August and for 50 USD in a regular hotel.

Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sveti Vlas (center)

Nessebar is a small traditional town on the peninsula, home to 22 thousand people, almost all of whom work in tourism. It is very pleasant to relax in this part of the country in peace and unity with the flavor of coastal Bulgaria. There is an Old Town with narrow streets, and a very large beach in the Sunny Beach area.

In the center of Nessebar you can rent a hotel room for four in August for about 60-100 USD.

Burgas is a very popular resort due to its low prices. In August, a room for four can easily be found for 40-50 USD.

Non-tourist areas

In principle, you can see the whole of Bulgaria if you focus on big cities and not urban villages. All of it is quite colorful, and the cities are very similar to each other, with tiled roofs in the old center and with panel and other low-rise apartment buildings in new areas. True, I advise you not to drive near the borders to Romania, Serbia and Macedonia, but the borders with Greece and Turkey are more friendly.

Where to go from Bulgaria

Many tourists who come to Bulgaria and realize that they are already in Europe are looking for which country else to visit during a 7-14-day trip. This is correct, since two absolutely incredible countries are located south of Bulgaria - and.

So, in Greece I advise you to visit, Kavala and Alexandroupolis, and in Turkey -.

How to get around Bulgaria

Many people choose the train as the best solution for those who do not like to get tired while traveling, but I suggest you modern air-conditioned buses. Traveling in them is quite comfortable, and there is much more privacy in relation to other passengers. Or you can rent a car and drive around the country on your own. Then, even in 14 days you can travel around absolutely the entire coast of Bulgaria, and in 7 days - half, which is also not bad!

Sunny Beach
The huge advantage of Sunny Beach (Sunny Beach) is an almost continuous 8-kilometer sandy beach 100 m wide. To this we add a convenient position behind Cape Emine, which serves as protection from strong currents, and a shallow, very gradually increasing depth near the shore.
In the early 1950s. Prominent Bulgarian architects took up the development of this resort. At that time, the sand dunes were still surrounded by dense forest and infested with snakes. In order to get rid of poisonous snakes, hedgehogs were released onto Sunny Beach, specially caught throughout Bulgaria, and after a short time the beach was free of snakes. The first refuge for tourists here were bungalows scattered throughout the forest, and later hotels appeared. But only a general tourism boom in the 1970s and 80s. turned Sunny Beach into the largest seaside resort in Bulgaria with 150 hotels and 45,000 accommodation beds. To date, almost all hotels have been reconstructed and meet the highest requirements for comfort and service. If we allow ourselves to directly compare Sunny Beach with Golden Sands in the north, this resort is more dynamic and, perhaps, more hippy.

In any case, it is much more extensive, so bicycle rickshaws and scooter and mountain bike rental shops, of which there are many along the carefully maintained embankment, earn good revenue. Even the police on Sunny Beach travel on bicycles. Behind the first line of hotels closest to the sea, several tourist trains run from the southern part of the resort to the northern. Large hotels have taxi ranks; However, drivers rarely turn on the taximeter, and the price is usually agreed upon verbally. Inexpensive city buses run along the street running north parallel to the hotel area.

The beach here is wide, with fine sand and well maintained. It is surrounded in the center and on the southern side by high sand dunes. In the north, unfortunately, similar dunes were destroyed during development. Sun loungers and umbrellas keep you cool and comfortable, and each stretch of beach has snack bars, drink stands, a restaurant, and rentals for all sorts of water-related props. There are pedalos, motorcycles, bananas, huge lifebuoys, and so on and so forth. On some sections of the beach, massage therapists work on sunbeds under awnings; on others, they simply walk among vacationers and offer their services on the spot.

Hotels are located along the coast in several rows. On the first line, where there is a good view of the sea, there are luxury hotels. On the second, third and sometimes even on the fourth line, housing is simpler, but much cheaper, quieter and greener: after all, Sunny Beach, like other Bulgarian resorts, is replete with beautiful old trees. Supermarkets provide holidaymakers with drinks, treats and newspapers. Hotel employees turn a blind eye to the fact that guests buy cheaper drinks outside the hotel.

Promenade
The promenade turns into a huge stage for shows in the afternoon and evening. Many bars and restaurants have open-air music bands performing; young people crowd outside tattoo and piercing shops or the bungee tower, while children test their agility on rodeo machines or jump ropes. On the shelves you can buy T-shirts, sports tights, branded jeans, mobile phones and computer games - of course, everything is fake, but for ridiculous prices. When, in the midst of this turmoil, the archaic figure of a gypsy with a bear appears, you cease to understand what time you are in. Training brown bears is not prohibited in Bulgaria, but gypsies have a reputation for thieves and swindlers, and the police invariably drive them away.

The center of Sunny Beach is located near the Kuban Hotel, quite precisely in the middle of the hotel zone stretching along the beach. Here guests can find a post office, a bus stop, a bank and many boutiques selling counterfeit branded clothing. Complementing the mix are shops and kiosks with CDs, American fast food establishments, trendy bars and discos modeled after such establishments in Ibiza, and a water park. Travel agencies offer excursions along short and long-distance routes, fish picnics and Balkan weddings. But, as a rule, it is better to book such excursions directly at the hotel or from a representative of the company that organized your trip to Bulgaria. Experience shows that the offers of “free” tour guides are not always as good as they first seem.

Excursion program
The most popular family excursions in Sunny Beach include a visit to the Dolphinarium in Varna, a jeep safari or a Monster Truck ride along the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. A truck with huge tires on wheels and benches in the back makes dizzying ascents and descents against the backdrop of a serene rural landscape until all passengers are dusted with a thin layer of dust. The trip ends with a hearty barbecue on the lake. No less popular among tourists is a one-day boat trip to “Robinson’s beach,” where Robinson and Friday await guests and arrange games and performances for them. There are two-day tours: one introduces vacationers to the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, and the Rila Monastery, the other is aimed at Istanbul, which is not so far away. Day tours include excursions to the gorges and villages of the Balkan Mountains, along the southern coast or to the Valley of the Roses, where raw materials for the precious rose oil are collected in May and June.

Saint Vlas
The resort town between Sunny Beach and Elenite is named after the nearest village, located a little higher on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Unlike the two neighboring settlements, Sveti Vlas (Sveti Vlas) has its own architectural face. A striking example of this is the Manastira Hotel, built in the style of the Rila Monastery. In addition to hotels, in St. Vlas there are villas and hotel-type houses, which are populated mainly by local and Eastern European tourists. The 1 km long sandy beach, full of coves, is not crowded. Although the village was founded in the 14th century, there is almost no historical information about it. Not far from the Manastira hotel you can see the ruins of a monastery.

Chifilka Museum of Applied Arts
The museum village of Chiflika, surrounded by the spurs of the Balkan Mountains, lies near the village of Kosichino (on the road from Sunny Beach through Tankovo, Orizare and the Dyulinsky Pass, about 25 km). In Kosichino there are signs towards the Museum of Applied Arts. In several old houses around a common courtyard, shoemakers, carpenters and potters demonstrate their crafts, which come from time immemorial. A small exhibition room contains national costumes and woven carpets. This complex includes a restaurant where you can try national Bulgarian cuisine, such as lamb on a spit, roasted over an open fire. Upon prior reservation, a fire dance of nestinars can be performed on coals for a group of tourists.

Elenite
12 km east of Sunny Beach, on a green slope above a narrower but excellent sandy beach, lies the fashionable Elenite Holiday Village resort, operating on the All-Inclusive principle. The Elenite complex consists of a comfortable hotel and a whole village of bungalows, recently renovated to European standards. In addition, there is a swimming pool, sports services and playgrounds. Unlike Sunny Beach, there is a more family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere here. Those looking for active entertainment can take a bus to any of the neighboring large resorts.

Nessebar
Modern Nessebar (Nessebar) and the southern outskirts of Sunny Beach smoothly merge into each other. Along the coastline, the border between the two resorts is a large water park with quite loud music.
However, there is one big difference between Sunny Beach and Nessebar: Sunny Beach arose only in the 1950s, and Nessebar was founded by the Thracians already in the 2nd century BC. e. The proliferation of new buildings today with residential areas, shops, restaurants, hotels and the Luna Park fairgrounds is spreading inland. Opposite them, on a peninsula connected to the land by a narrow pier, stands the old Nessebar.

Church of the Pantocrator
The Church of Christ Pantocrator (Christ Pantocrator) houses an art gallery of local artists. Built in the 13th century, it is especially interesting for its facade, decorated in the Turkish style with decorative arches with colored ceramics and alternating rows of stone and brick, forming a striped pattern on the facade. The decoration of the eastern apse retains a very ancient element, actually pagan: this is a decorative frieze with a swastika.

St. John the Baptist
Built in the 11th century. Church of St. John the Baptist (Sveti Yoan Krastitel) with a powerful, almost devoid of decoration, façade made of rubble. The three-nave interior contains remains of frescoes. This church also serves as a gallery; In the summer, wonderful classical music concerts take place here every week.

Ethnographical museum
There is a very interesting Ethnographic Museum in Nessebar. It is created in a typical house of the National Renaissance era. Its second floor is decorated with beautiful wooden carvings, while the first floor is built of rough stone and was intended for storage areas and workshops.

St. Stephen's Church
This is the only church in which the multicolor frescoes of the 16th-17th centuries are perfectly preserved. The frescoes depict biblical scenes, among which the scene of the Last Judgment stands out, and portraits of patrons who supported the church with their donations. In the narthex there is an image of a medieval ship carved into the plaster. The church premises are decorated with a magnificent iconostasis and pulpit (XVIII century) with skillful carvings and gilding.

Captain's house
The old captain's house (Kapetanska Sreshta) from the 19th century, located high above the port of Nessebar. The rooms on the ground floor, lined with dark wood, where goods and tools were stored, are today used as restaurant rooms on cold days. But it’s much nicer to sit outside with a view of the Black Sea and the sparkling lights of the beach and hotel area of \u200b\u200bNessebar. True, the idyll is somewhat spoiled by the view of the bazaar below the port, which from above looks like a chaotic jumble of tent tarpaulins, cardboard and scraps of plastic. On its shelves there is everything that is legally and illegally supplied from nearby Turkey, as well as products from garment factories in Bulgaria.

Beaches around Nessebar
The southern coast of the peninsula is surrounded by a sometimes narrow, sometimes wider pebble beach, on which many of those working in Old Nessebar spend their lunch breaks. Unfortunately, the beach is not cleaned, so it is more suitable for a quick dip in the water than for lounging around to your heart's content.

A beautiful wide sandy beach is located along a spit that juts south into the bay all the way to Pomorie. Here, during socialist times, hotels and departmental holiday homes were built, most of which still operate for Bulgarian holidaymakers to this day. In addition, a lot of people come to this beach for one day, so it is usually crowded here.
The third beach surrounds the bay between New Nessebar and Sunny Beach to the north of the new quarters. This beach can also be very busy in the summer months, although relaxation there is greatly disturbed by loud music from the Aquapark, which is located nearby in Sunny Beach.

Guests of Nessebar can find the best conditions for swimming in Sunny Beach, where buses and tourist trains depart from the bus station in front of the city wall several times an hour. When the sea is calm, boats depart there every hour.

The inconspicuous town of Ravda is nestled 3 km south of Nessebar. This is an ideal place for those who would like to live or dine at a reasonable price near the very expensive Nessebar and at the same time find a good beach. The local sandy beach slopes very gently into the sea, which is especially appreciated by families with small children. Although Ravda is gradually catching up with Nessebar in terms of its tourist infrastructure, it still remains a small, cozy vacation spot for lovers of solitude.

Pomorie
About 14 km south of Nessebar, at the southern tip of Lake Pomorie, lies the modern city of Pomorie. Lake Pomorie (Pomorie Jezero) is a lagoon separated by a sand dune from the sea, in which salt has been produced by evaporation since ancient times.
Pomorie is still the most important supplier of salt for Bulgaria, and also supplies the mineral resorts of Bulgaria with medicinal mud. Hotels in Pomorie also offer treatment procedures. But the condition of these hotels may not entirely please you. Despite the modern hotel complex that quickly grew up here literally on the sand, the beautiful sandy beach of Pomorie now produces a rather depressing impression. However, tourists often drop by here, because it is in Pomorie that the best cognac in Bulgaria, Black Sea Gold, is produced and sold from the factory.

On the spit of the peninsula, among the new buildings, curious visitors can see several houses from the National Renaissance era. Once upon a time in Pomorie there was the same Old Town as in Nessebar, but most of its houses were destroyed during a fire in 1906. On the western side of the Old Town there is the Monastery of St. George, founded in the 12th century, but which has come down to us in the architectural appearance of the 19th century. This is the only monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where monks still live. Back at the end of the 20th century. The pious brothers made their own wine, but since only a few monks remained here, the monastery vineyards were rented out. Visitors who politely ask to be admitted through the gate are usually allowed to tour the monastery, which houses a small collection of icons from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The modern Salt Museum on Lake Pomerania tells about the technology of salt extraction and the healing properties of salt mud. Unfortunately, it is not always open.

Burgas
Being at once a port city, a base for a petrochemical complex and a destination for charter flights for holidaymakers on the southern coast of Bulgaria, Burgas has many faces. The outskirts welcome guests to a city of modern panel blocks and industrial enterprises, and the city center with its extensive Seaside Park and a beautiful pedestrian area is charming and friendly.

The central square with train and bus stations, Garova Square, is located in the southern part of the Old Town, southwest of the Seaside Park. Pedestrian zone on the street. Aleksandrovskaya, surrounded by tall trees, street cafes and shops, leads from the square to the north, past the high-rise Bulgaria Hotel, where the pedestrian zone of Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard with beautifully renovated classic houses begins on the right.
Here, the small Archaeological Museum displays a collection of finds from the Roman, Greek and Thracian eras.

Most guests of Burgas prefer to spend time in shops and restaurants. For the Bulgarian wallet, their range is excessively expensive, but this does not make them less visited. Tourists with a reserve of euros can shop here quite cheaply. Branded clothing, shoes and watches here are usually genuine, as many companies have branches in Bulgaria. But here they are much cheaper than in Western European stores. However, you need to understand at least a little about the products and be sure to check their quality and brand name.

Ethnographic Museum of Burgas
In a typical Bulgarian Renaissance building with a beautiful garden around it, there is this museum with a collection of national costumes, furniture and household utensils from the southern Black Sea region. The most interesting exhibits include fearful masks and kukeri fur costumes, which in some regions are still used to drive out winter spirits and invoke fertility for the new agricultural year. The costumes of the nestinars, fire walkers from the southern Bulgarian village of Bulgari, are also on display here.

In the northeast of the street. St. Cyril and Methodius joins Demokratsiya Boulevard, which leads along the Seaside Park (Morska Gradina) back to the bus station. Many restaurants in Burgas offer relaxation and food in the cool greenery or with a beautiful view of the sea, a little spoiled, however, by oil tankers and container ships. It is better to refrain from swimming on the open beach of the park due to poor water quality.

Burgas lakes
The largest wet biotope in Bulgaria lies just before the gates of the port city. It consists of four shallow lakes: Poda, Mandrenskoe, Vaiya and Atanasov, where two thirds of the bird species living in Bulgaria can be observed. This 9,500-hectare habitat also serves as a welcome resting place for flocks of migratory birds during their migration along Via Ponticum. Hundreds of thousands of birds gather around Burgas in spring and autumn.

Poda Nature Reserve
The reserve is located 8 km south of Burgas on the road to Sozopol. Through telescopes mounted on the roof, visitors can observe Dalmatian pelicans, red-necked geese, avocets, corncrakes and gulls. During the migratory season, storks, spotted eagles and many other winged travelers gather here in flocks.

Chernomorets
In the resort of Chernomorets, a few kilometers north of Sozopol, there is a beautifully maintained city park and a wonderful city beach, which are favored by guests of the local campsites, mostly local residents. In the pretty center of the town, several restaurants invite you to stop by for a relaxing break.

Sozopl
If you drive south along the coast to the artistic town of Sozopol (Sozopol), the road passes through an amazing landscape consisting of lagoons and lakes.
The area, protected as a nature reserve and bird nesting area, can only be visited on a scheduled guided tour. The abundance of birds will provide an opportunity for those interested in ornithology to observe rare species of waterfowl and migratory birds.

Like Nessebar, Sozopol consists of the New Town (east of the peninsula) and a spit extending far into the sea to the north, inhabited in Thracian times, on which stands the Old Town with architecture in the style of the Bulgarian Renaissance

St. John's Island
Right in front of Sozopol, an island rises in the sea - the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In the 13th century. An Orthodox monastery was built here, of which now only ruins remain. Today, St. John's Island serves as a bird sanctuary, where you can, among other things, observe pygmy cormorants. From the pier to the street. For a small fee you can reach the island by fishing boat.

Beaches of Sozopol
There are two city beaches in Sozopol, both of which are located in the eastern part of the peninsula. One borders the park area, the other extends south of the hill on which the modern district of the city of Harmanite stands, along the coastal road towards Tsarevo. Both beaches are wide, with fine sand, equipped with protective umbrellas and sun loungers and provide a full range of sports equipment for all kinds of water and beach activities.

So far, both beaches are firmly occupied by local residents, but every year more and more vacationers from other Eastern European countries join them. In the summer months it is almost impossible to find a free place - so we recommend visiting the beach of the Golden Fish campsite in the north or Smokinia in the south. Almost all hotels in Sozopol are concentrated in Harmanit.

Smokinia Beach
To the south of the city, the coastline with its beautiful, untouched sandy beaches is framed by copses. Tourists, mostly from Eastern European countries, set up their tents in the shade of trees at numerous, simply equipped tent sites. Located 4 km south of Smokinia, the gently sloping beach, up to 100 m wide, is open not only to tent dwellers and is very popular among young Bulgarians. In general, it is not forbidden to even set up a tent somewhere “in the wild.” The health and safety of visitors is ensured by a couple of simple beach bars and swimming instructors, who are especially attentive due to the frequent strong surf here.

Dunes
The Dunes, a four-star resort that ledges up the hill above the beach, is built partly in the local Revival style (Pelican Building). Here, a wide selection of sports and entertainment programs is a whole independent holiday world, where sports lovers and families with children can have a wonderful holiday. But the real Bulgaria is practically not felt here. If you like to walk and watch birds, then you will be satisfied in any case, because very close is the Alepu Nature Reserve, a country of lakes and swamps, where paths and bridges have been laid for tourists. Thickets of sedge and reeds provide reliable shelter for hoopoes, scops owls, red-headed ducks and many other species of birds.

Rpotamo River
5 km south of Dunes, the coastal highway E87 makes a considerable detour into the interior of the mainland and at the same time crosses the Ropotamo River through a bridge. Shortly before the bridge, the road to the Arkutino pond with water lilies goes to the right. True, it’s worth going to see it only in June, when the water lilies are in bloom. The beach of the same name with high dunes borders the mouth of the river. A rare and strictly protected species of sand lilies grows here. The river, only 20 km long, on its way from the Strandzha Mountains to the Black Sea flows through a valley with dense vegetation, where bizarre rock formations, for example, the Lion's Head (Lyavskata glav), rise above oak and beech forests overgrown with vines and ivy.
Travel agencies organize boat excursions around Ropotamo, mainly in the section from the bridge to the mouth, some then go out to sea and go around Zmeiny (Zmiyski) Island, which, like the mouth of Ropotamo, is a protected area. Along the way, you can spot native birds such as purple herons, pelicans and blue kingfishers. Sometimes you can even see sea turtles and snakes. A two-hour boat excursion can be booked at all travel agencies and hotels, or you can negotiate with the boatmen right at the pier near the bridge.

Primorsko
The town of Primorsko, 22 km from Sozopol, was once widely known outside of Bulgaria thanks to its International Youth Center. Here, young people from Eastern Bloc countries spent their holidays in simple dormitories.
After the collapse of the block, the center existed for several more years as a youth campsite, then it closed, and in 2005, after a thorough reconstruction, it opened again. But the country dacha of the last communist president Todor Zhivkov, standing on a beautifully arched sandy shore north of Primorsko, has been perfectly preserved, despite all the changes. It is still used by the political elite.

To the south of Primorsko there is also a beautiful sandy beach that stretches, sometimes interrupted by small rocky capes, almost to neighboring Tsarev, which is located 15 km from here. A dense belt of greenery frames this part of the coast and provides coolness and shade to the campsites lined along the entire coast. The private hotel sector and tent sites are usually filled with Bulgarians and Czechs. But around the former Youth Center, 2 km south of Primorsko, tourism managers are beginning to actively develop the beaches and adjacent areas. For example, the four-star Magnolia club, built for the French, has already been opened.

Kiten
From a purely Bulgarian holiday destination for workers with large departmental boarding houses, it has turned into a beautiful and comfortable resort, which also attracts foreign audiences. Numerous restaurants and boutiques vied with each other to invite guests and buyers.
To the north of Kiten there is a sandy beach that is always quite crowded, while the more rocky and windswept shores south of the village are favored by surfers.

Tsarevo and Ahtopol
The stretch of coast from here to the south is considered the best windsurfing coast in Bulgaria, and the Bulgarka campsite near Tsarevo serves as a meeting place for surfers. Tsarevo itself is somewhat reminiscent of the long-forgotten cities of the Wild West. Behind it, the E87 highway turns inland towards Malko Tarnovo, with only one very rough country road following the coast, still indented by headlands and coves, further south to Ahtopol (Ahtopol). Picturesquely located on a peninsula, surrounded on both sides by beautiful bays, Ahtopol remains a relatively inexpensive resort, popular mainly among Bulgarian tourists.

Sinemorets
This place will soon change, as the coast between Ahtopol and Sinemorets, located 8 km away, has become fashionable among the creative intelligentsia and wealthy citizens. Now it is actively being bought up and built up. In addition to the holiday homes, further south there is an all-inclusive enclave that accepts only tourist groups from Western Europe - the Bella Vista Beach Club resort.

The northern beach of Sinemorets is a strip of beautiful sand in front of the mouth of the Velika River. Here fresh and salt water are very close to each other. On the southern beach, rocky headlands surround sandy bays, and they are quite friendly towards nudists.

Strandzha National Park
A mountainous, densely forested part of the mainland off the southern coast, the large Strandzha National Park (up to 700 m above sea level) is a wonderful but challenging place for hiking. The main goal for one-day and multi-day excursions in the National Park are usually karst formations - caves, gaps and unusual weathering figures among the rocks.
Trips to cultural treasures such as churches and monasteries in small old villages are also popular.
The flora and fauna here are extremely diverse: in addition to wild boars and red deer, wolves live in this area, black storks build their nests on bell towers in the spring, holly, laurel and rhododendron grow near reservoirs. |
